UNH DEFEATS DARTMOUTH IN GRANITE BOWL BATTLE, 52- 31: DURHAM, N.H. – Ricky Santos (Bellingham, Mass.) threw for two touchdowns – both to Keith LeVan (Waltham, Mass.) – and scored one TD on the ground, and Mike Boyle (Plymouth, N.H.) scored twice to lead the 10th-ranked University of New Hampshire football team to Saturday afternoon’s 52-31 non- conference victory against intrastate rival Dartmouth College at Cowell Stadium. It marked the first game on the FieldTurf of Mooradian Field. UNH, which has won the Granite Bowl Trophy every year since its inception in 2000 as part of 10 straight victories in the series vs. Dartmouth, improved to 2-1 with its second win in as many weeks. The Big Green is 0-2. Santos added to his CAA (and UNH) career records for touchdowns (106) and completions (942) – as well as to his UNH records for passing attempts (1,389) and passing yards (11,081) – by completing 17 of 23 attempts for 199 yards. He also gained 22 yards on seven carries. Boyle opened the game with a 91-yard kickoff return down the left sideline for a TD and the subsequent PAT by Tom Manning (Rome, N.Y.; 7-for-7 PAT; 39-yd FG) gave the ‘Cats a 7-0 lead. Following an interception by UNH’s Jeff Pam- mer (Northampton, Pa.) – teammate Hugo Souza (Marshfield, Mass.) had tipped the ball in the air – Boyle capped a 4-play, 13-yard drive with a 3-yard end around run to the right side at 12:08 to extend UNH’s lead to 14-0. DC then took advantage of a fumbled punt to score on a 4-play, 25-yard drive to close within 14-7 at 7:05. Quarterback Tom Bennewitz (14-27, 106 yards, 2 TDs, 2 INT) tossed a lateral to Julian Collins in the left flat, and his 12-yard TD strike found Phil Galligan alone in the back left corner. New Hampshire, which scored on eight of 12 possessions and missed a 44-yard field goal attempt on another, responded with a 10-play, 67-yard drive that culminated with a 1-yard TD run by Robert Simpson (Brockton, Mass.; 10 car- ries, 70 yards) to take a 21-7 lead at 3:47 of the first quarte. The teams combined to score on four consecutive possessions in the second quarter and UNH took a 14-point lead (31-17) into halftime. Dartmouth pulled within 21-14 at 10:35 on a 7-yard pass play from Bennewitz to Eric Paul (six catches; 45 yards), then UNH’s Manning connected on a 39-yard field goal attempt at 8:13 to push the Wildcats’ advantage to 24-14. The Big Green responded with a 10-play, 40-yard drive that included a fake punt – punter Brian Scullin was one of six DC players throw a completion – and produced Andrew Dempler’s 32-yard field goal at 5:05. On the ensuing possession, UNH methodi- cally moved the ball downfield on Santos’ passing, and he hit LeVan in the front left corner of the endzone on a 4-yard TD pass with 13 seconds remaining to close the first-half scoring. The Wildcats, who had a balanced offense with 242 rushing yards and 231 passing yards, opened the third quarter with touchdowns 1:44 apart – a 15-yard pass from Santos to LeVan (at 11:58) and a 5-yard Santos run (10:14) – to extend the lead to 45-17. Bennewitz’s 4-yard TD pass to Mark Brogna made the score 45-24 with 46 seconds left in the third quarter. UNH went back in front by 28 points on a 12-yard pass play from R.J.
