Song You Raise Me Up By You Raise Me Up The Secret Garden from The Once in a Red MoonReleasedMarch 26, 2002Length5:04LabelDeccaComposer (s)Rolf L'vlandLyricist (s) Brendan Graham You Raise Me Up - a song originally written by Norwegian-Irish duo Secret Garden. The music was written by Rolf Leuland of Secret Garden, and lyrics by Brendan Graham. After the song was performed in early 2002 by Secret Garden and their guest vocalist Brian Kennedy, the song became only a minor British hit. The song was recorded by more than a hundred other artists, including American composer Josh Groban in 2003 and Irish boy band Westlife in 2005, whose versions were hits in their countries. Welsh singer Aled Jones recorded a successful cover music in 2004, the female Irish ensemble Celtic Woman in 2004, and also enjoyed huge worldwide success with it in 2005. Von Jan Helgason claimed that the song was originally written and released in 1977 under the title Seknoir, which means Into the light. In 2002, Levland wrote an instrumental play and called it The Silent History. Levland demands that it be original. However, Soknukur had moderate success, and it is claimed that Leuland heard the song while Iceland. The Icelandic Performing Rights Society analyzed both songs and found 97% similarities between them. They stated that the songs were musically identical, except for just two notes. At the press conference it became known that Groban played for him in 2007, who reacted in an alarmed manner. He then admitted that the two songs were similar and he did not know where the inspiration came from. Later, singer Edgar Smiri performed the song S'knu'ur in English to express the similarities. It is said that Levland, who allegedly created the play, later turned to Irish writer and songwriter Brendan Graham to write the lyrics to his tune, after reading Graham's novels. In 2018, Helgason filed a lawsuit against Universal, saying the tune was removed from him without his permission. Levland stated that the song was made for Levland himself and was performed for the first time at the funeral of Leuland's mother. The original vocalist was Johnny Logan, who recorded a demo with the orchestra. However, the desire to distance the album from Eurovision led to a change of vocalist. In 2002, it was released on the album Secret Garden Once in a Red Moon, with vocals performed by Irish singer Brian Kennedy, and sold well in both Ireland and Norway. Brian Kennedy was originally supposed to follow Secret Garden on their Asian tour in 2002, but Curb Records failed to agree with Universal on Brian's release and he reluctantly failed to attend the tour. He was replaced by Norwegian singer Jan Werner Danielsen, who also later recorded the song with Secret Garden. A demo of this recording was released in 2010 on Danielsen's posthumous compilation One More Time - The Very Best Of, which included several previously unpublished recordings. Popular Although the original version did not chart internationally, the song has been covered more than 125 times, with the most successful cover versions being Josh Groban (#73 in the US and #1 in the US Adult Contemporary), Christian band Selah (#1 in the Christian Billboard charts), Westlife (#1 in the UK), Daniel O'Donnell (#22 in the UK) and Dutch pop star Wesley Klein (#4). The song also found success with a three-song EP titled George Best - A Tribute by Peter Corry and original singer Brian Kennedy, who reached #4 in the UK. In 2004, the song was played more than 500,000 times on American radio. At the end of 2005, more than 80 versions were available in the United States alone, and she was nominated for the Gospel Music Awards four times, including Song of the Year. On September 21, 2006, You Raise Me Up became the first song to sell more than 76,000 copies on the popular music site musicnotes.com. It was written in the traditional form of the poetry choir in E♭ major, with vocals by Philan and Fehily ranging from B♭3 chords to B♭5.
