Kidder1 & Amy J. Binder 2 Published online: 1 February 2020 # Springer Science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature 2020 Abstract In this paper, we report data from interviews with members of conservative political clubs at four flagship public universities. First, we categorize these students into three analytically distinct orientations regarding Donald Trump and his presidency (or what we call Trumpism). There are principled rejecters, true believers, and satisficed partisans. We argue that Trumpism is a disunifying symbol in our respondents’ self- narratives. Specifically, right-leaning collegians use Trumpism to draw distinctions over the appropriate meaning of conservatism. Second, we show how political clubs sort and shape orientations to Trumpism. As such, our work reveals how student-led groups can play a significant role in making different political discourses available on campuses and shaping the types of activism pursued by club members—both of which have potentially serious implications for the content and character of American democracy moving forward. Keywords Americanpolitics.Conservatism.Culture.Highereducation.Identity.Organizations Introduction Donald Trump, first as a candidate and now as the president, has been an exceptionally divisive force in American politics, even among conservatives who typically vote Republican.

  • Participatory Propaganda Model 1
A PARTICIPATORY PROPAGANDA MODEL 1 Participatory Propaganda: The Engagement of Audiences in the Spread of Persuasive Communications Alicia Wanless Michael Berk Director of Strategic Communications, Visiting Research Fellow, SecDev Foundation Centre for Cyber Security and International [email protected] Relations Studies, University of Florence [email protected] Paper presented at the "Social Media & Social Order, Culture Conflict 2.0" conference organized by Cultural Conflict 2.0 and sponsored by the Research Council of Norway on 1 December 2017, Oslo. To be published as part of the conference proceedings in 2018. A PARTICIPATORY PROPAGANDA MODEL 2 Abstract Existing research on aspects of propaganda in a digital age tend to focus on isolated techniques or phenomena, such as fake news, trolls, memes, or botnets. Providing invaluable insight on the evolving human-technology interaction in creating new formats of persuasive messaging, these studies lend to an enriched understanding of modern propaganda methods. At the same time, the true effects and magnitude of successful influencing of large audiences in the digital age can only be understood if target audiences are perceived not only as ‘objects’ of influence, but as ‘subjects’ of persuasive communications as well. Drawing from vast available research, as well as original social network and content analyses conducted during the 2016 U.S. presidential elections, this paper presents a new, qualitatively enhanced, model of modern propaganda – “participatory propaganda” - and discusses its effects on modern democratic societies. Keywords: propaganda, Facebook, social network analysis, content analysis, politics A PARTICIPATORY PROPAGANDA MODEL 3 Participatory Propaganda: The Engagement of Audiences in the Spread of Persuasive Communications Rapidly evolving information communications technologies (ICTs) have drastically altered the ways individuals engage in the public information domain, including news ways of becoming subjected to external influencing.

YOU DON’T SAY... "Once it got out, people on the right and left quickly tried successfully to kill it." Rep. Chuck McGrady, R-Henderson, on an HB2 compromise measure that collapsed in June when a draft of the proposal was leaked to a Charlotte television station. Utilities Commission Hearing Schedule • UNC Board of Governors • Other Meetings and Events of Interest News Summary Failed Negotiations Last week's failed deal to repeal House Bill 2 wasn't the first time Republican-led efforts toward a compromise have failed. During the final days of the legislature's session in June, GOP Rep. Chuck McGrady of Hendersonville was quietly working on legislation he says would likely have prevented the loss of NBA, NCAA and ACC sporting events. The sports leagues have canceled major events in North Carolina, voicing concerns that HB2 promotes discrimination against lesbian, gay and transgender people. The moves will likely cost the state's economy millions of dollars in tourism revenue. This month's decisions by the ACC and NCAA prompted Gov. Pat McCrory to suggest a repeal of HB2 was possible if the Charlotte City Council first repealed its nondiscrimination ordinance, which would have allowed transgender people to use the bathroom that corresponds to their gender identity. Charlotte leaders declined to take action, effectively killing the proposal. The legislature can legally repeal HB2 while also passing a law to prevent the Charlotte ordinance from taking effect, but Republicans appear unwilling to support that option.
