The Grand Game: a Celebration of Sherlockian Scholarship Volume Two: 1960–2010 The Grand Game: A Celebration of Sherlockian Scholarship Volume Two: 1960–2010 Edited by Laurie R. King, BSI and Leslie S. Klinger, BSI Order it at: www.bakerstreetjournal.com 408 pages, hardcover, January 2012 With more than 60 photographs & illustrations Editor Biographies LAURIE R. KING (“The Red Circle”) is the author of twenty-one novels, most of them crime fiction, many of them bestselling, award-winning, or both. Eleven of the stories (from 1994’s The Beekeeper’s Apprentice to the 2011 Pirate King ) feature Mary Russell, a young English-American orphan who meets Sherlock Holmes during the Great War, becoming his student, his partner, and very nearly his equal. Russell’s exploits have spawned a lesser version of The Game among her own readers, including a website (www.MaryRussellHolmes.com) and Twitter presence. Like Miss Russell, King’s background is theology, with a B.A. in Comparative Religion from the University of California, Santa Cruz, a Masters in Old Testament theology from Berkeley’s Graduate Theological Union, and an honorary doctorate from the Church Divinity School of the Pacific. Like Russell and Holmes, King travels a great deal – curiously enough, often to places later visited by her characters. She and Leslie Klinger are co-editing a collection of original Sherlock Holmes-inspired short stories called A Study in Sherlock , due out from Random House in October 2011. King’s own vast and ever-growing website may be explored at www.LaurieRKing.com. LESLIE S. KLINGER (“The Abbey Grange”) is the editor of the three-volume The New Annotated Sherlock Holmes , published by W.W. Norton in 2004 and 2005. He is also the editor of the ten- volume Sherlock Holmes Reference Library, aimed at the serious student of Sherlock Holmes. Klinger has written numerous books and articles on Sherlockiana and co-edited (with Andrew Jay Peck) the revised edition of The Date Being—?: A Compendium of Sherlockian Chronologies and (with S. E. Dahlinger) Sherlock Holmes, Conan Doyle & The Bookman: An Anthology of Literary Treasures (1895-1933) . He has taught several UCLA Extension courses on “Sherlock Holmes and His World” and is consulting with Warner Bros. on the film “Sherlock Holmes 2: A Game of Shadows,” due out in December 2011. He is also editing an anthology of Victorian detective stories for IDW Publishing. He has also written The New Annotated Dracula (2008) and numerous articles about Dracula and vampires and is editing an anthology of Victorian vampire stories for IDW Publishing. Klinger holds the Two-Shilling Award and several Editors’ Medals from The Baker www.bakerstreetjournal.com Page 1 of 4 The Grand Game Volume Two Street Irregulars. • Dear Friends, One of the Great Pleasures of Being a Crime Novelist
Dear friends, One of the great pleasures of being a crime novelist is that it gives an excuse for playing with one’s favorite ideas: Sherlock Holmes, Kipling’s India, the 1906 San Francisco quake and fire—and now, Gilbert and Sullivan. Pirate King, to be published this September, is the eleventh in the Mary Russell/Sherlock Holmes series. In this story, the duo are dragged into the wicked shenanigans of a motion picture company that is making a movie about a movie about The Pirates of Penzance, a venture that takes them from London to Lisbon, then across the seas to Morocco. In hopes that you, fellow devotees of Gilbert and Sullivan, will enjoy the book and perhaps even join in the fun, I am sending you my adaptation of the Major General’s song, twisted to my own nefarious purposes—namely, the piratical and criminal—with which I fully intend to baffle the audience of my September book tour events, staging sing-alongs of that most challenging of G&S songs. If any of your Society would like to make ours a mutual admiration society, either during the summer or in the book tour itself, I would love the chance to infect my own fans with a love of G&S. If you would like to participate in the tour, or in the upcoming “Ten Weeks of Laurie ARrrgh! King” promotion, we’d love to add a layer of Victorian-era silliness to the shenanigans. My tour will take me to the San Francisco area, Seattle, Portland, Phoenix, Chicago, Los Angeles, Minneapolis, St Louis, and Denver.
