That year, SLU climbed all the way up to No. 10 in the nation in consecutive weeks in February. uA little-known fact is that the Billikens were ranked No. 1 in the inaugural AP poll released on Jan. 17, 1949. The reigning NIT champions that year, SLU held the top spot again the next week before being overtaken by eventual NCAA champion Kentucky. GETTING DEFENSIVE uThe Billikens have a saying on the bench when on defense, “Make a Play.” A “play” refers to either a deflection, block, steal, or taking a charge. uThere have been plenty of “plays” falling into the steals category recently. Last Tuesday against Central Arkansas, the Billikens registered 16 steals, the most in a game since the Billikens twice turned in 16 steals in the 2003-04 season.
