BOOK REVIEWS 835 WEB OF HATE: INSIDE CANADA'S FAR RIGHT NETWORK, by Warren Kinsella (Toronto: HarperCollins Publishers, 1994) [The antiscmite] is a man who is afraid ... of himself, of his conscience, his freedom, of his instincts, of his responsibilities, of solitude, of change, of society and the world ... Antisemitism, in a word, is fear of man's fate. The antisemite is the man who wants to be pitiless stone, furious torrent, devastating lightning: in short, everything but a man. 1 Warren Kinsella's message in Web of Hate'- is that racism is alive, well, and growing in Canada. Kinsella focuses on white men who hate. It is difficult to define those whom they hate: they hate all who are not like them; they hate people of colour and people who do not share their language or traditions; but, most of all, they hate the Jewish community. Anti-semiti~m seems to be the symbol of their racism, the banner under which they march. While Web of Hate should interest the general reader, it is, in many ways, a book for lawyers. Lawyers both historical 3 and contemporary 4 populate its pages. The book relates technical evidential issues that arose in hate crime trials, including a "present memory refreshed" issue in the trial of a Manitoba Klan leader; the qualification of an "expert" in the Keegstra trial; and a false distinction Doug Christie sought to draw in the Finta trial respecting the weight of testimony taken on oath and on affirmation. 5 Kinsella also poses the problem of adapting existing hate legislation and its enforcement to new computer technology, particularly to the transmission of hate literature by electronic mail from the United States to Canada.6 Despite its legal appeal, Web of Hate is primarily a work of journalism. -

Drobnicki This bibliography is a supplement to three earlier ones published in the March 1994, Decem- ber 1996, and September 1998 issues of the Bulletin of Bibliography. During the intervening time. Holocaust revisionism has continued to be discussed both in the scholarly literature and in the mainstream press, especially owing to the libel lawsuit filed by David Irving against Deb- orah Lipstadt and Penguin Books. The Holocaust deniers, who prefer to call themselves “revi- sionists” in an attempt to gain scholarly legitimacy, have refused to go away and remain as vocal as ever— Bradley R. Smith has continued to send revisionist advertisements to college newspapers (including free issues of his new publication. The Revisionist), generating public- ity for his cause. Holocaust-denial, which will be used interchangeably with Holocaust revisionism in this bib- liography, is a body of literature that seeks to “prove” that the Jewish Holocaust did not hap- pen. Although individual revisionists may have different motives and beliefs, they all share at least one point: that there was no systematic attempt by Nazi Germany to exterminate Euro- pean Jewry. -

This led them to an absorption with the Jewish creation myths in Genesis, which they obsessively reinterpreted to formulate allegorical explanations of how humans ended up trapped in the world of matter. The basic Gnostic story, which varied in details from teacher to teacher, was this: In the beginning there was an unknowable, immaterial, and invisible God, sometimes called the Father of All and sometimes by other names. “He” was neither male nor female, and was composed of an implicitly finite amount of a living nonphysical substance. Surrounding this God was a great empty region called the Pleroma (the fullness). Beyond the Pleroma lay empty space. The God acted to fill the Pleroma through a series of emanations, a squeezing off of small portions of his/its nonphysical energetic divine material. In most accounts there are thirty emanations in fifteen complementary pairs, each getting slightly less of the divine material and therefore being slightly weaker. The emanations are called Aeons (eternities) and are mostly named personifications in Greek of abstract ideas. -

The following talk was given by George Critchlow on April 25, 2006 at Temple Beth Shalom in Spokane, Washington in honor of Yom Hashoah, the annual remembrance of the Holocaust. Critchlow, an associate pro- fessor at Gonzaga University School of Law and a founder and former director of the Gonzaga Institute for Action Against Hate, was selected by the congregation to represent the “righteous gentile.” Professor Critchlow would like to acknowledge the helpful ideas and background information presented at the Amnesty International USA Lawyers’ Conference at the University of Washington School of Law on February 17-18, 2006. In particular, he was inspired by John Shattuck’s presentation titled “The Legacy of Nuremberg: Confronting Genocide and Terrorism Through the Rule of Law.” I have enormous respect for Temple Beth Shalom, what it stands for, its congregation, and those individuals whom I have come to know and count as friends. I am deeply honored and privileged to be invited to speak to you on this Day of Remembrance–especially in light of the occasion to recognize the 60 years that have now passed since the establishment of a new rule of law and accountability regarding war crimes and crimes against humanity at the Nuremberg Military Tribunal in 1946. I have a poster hanging in my office that frequently catches my eye and reminds me to connect my heart with my head. It is a picture of a small child of uncertain ethnicity, running happily, arms out, into the smiling face and open arms of his mother. -

COVID-19 DISINFORMATION BRIEFING NO. 2 FAR-RIGHT MOBILISATION 9th April 2020 This is the second in a series of briefings from ISD’s Digital Research Unit on the information ecosystem around coronavirus (COVID-19). These briefings expose how technology platforms are being used to promote disinformation, hate, extremism and authoritarianism in the context of COVID-19. It is based on ISD’s mixture of natural language processing, network analysis and ethnographic online research. This briefing focuses on the way far-right groups and individuals are mobilising around COVID-19 in the US. The first briefing in the series can be found on ISD’s website. Top Lines Far-right groups and individuals are opportunistically using the ongoing pandemic to advance their movements and ideologies: - COVID-19 is an increasingly important topic within far-right communities. Mentions of ‘corona-chan’, a slang term for COVID-19 popular with far-right groups and individuals have increased significantly across mainstream and fringe social media platforms. - COVID-19 is being used as a ‘wedge issue’ to promote conspiracy theories, target minority communities, and call for extreme violence. COVID-19 is being used to advance calls for the ‘boogaloo’ – an extreme right-wing meme referring to an impending civil war: - While some of these calls appear to be ironic, others should be recognised as legitimate security threats. - Discussions of the ‘boogaloo’ are increasingly pivoting towards the ways the COVID- 19 pandemic provides an opportunity for violence. - This conversation is taking place across mainstream and fringe social media. - This trend has already manifested into real-world violence, with one alleged white supremacist terrorist dying after shootouts with the FBI. -

African Afro-futurism: Allegories and Speculations Gavin Steingo Introduction In his seminal text, More Brilliant Than The Sun, Kodwo Eshun remarks upon a general tension within contemporary African-American music: a tension between the “Soulful” and the “Postsoul.”1 While acknowledging that the two terms are always simultaneously at play, Eshun ultimately comes down strongly in favor of the latter. I quote him at length: Like Brussels sprouts, humanism is good for you, nourishing, nurturing, soulwarming—and from Phyllis Wheatley to R. Kelly, present-day R&B is a perpetual fight for human status, a yearning for human rights, a struggle for inclusion within the human species. Allergic to cybersonic if not to sonic technology, mainstream American media—in its drive to banish alienation, and to recover a sense of the whole human being through belief systems that talk to the “real you”—compulsively deletes any intimation of an AfroDiasporic futurism, of a “webbed network” of computerhythms, machine mythology and conceptechnics which routes, reroutes and criss- crosses the Atlantic. This digital diaspora connecting the UK to the US, the Caribbean to Europe to Africa, is in Paul Gilroy’s definition a “rhizo- morphic, fractal structure,” a “transcultural, international formation.” […] [By contrast] [t]he music of Alice Coltrane and Sun Ra, of Underground Resistance and George Russell, of Tricky and Martina, comes from the Outer Side. It alienates itself from the human; it arrives from the future. Alien Music is a synthetic recombinator, an applied art technology for amplifying the rates of becoming alien. Optimize the ratios of excentric- ity. Synthesize yourself. -

Globalisation and social movements In the society a large number of changes have been brought about by efforts exerted by people individually and collectively. Such efforts have been called social movements. A social movement may, therefore, be defined as “a collectively acting with some continuity to promote or resist a change in the society or group of which it is a part. Social movement is the effort by an association to bring about a change in the society. A social movement may also be directed to resist a change. Some movements are directed to modify certain aspects of the existing social order whereas others may aim to change it completely. The former are called reform movements and the latter are known as revolutionary movements. Social movements may be of numerous kinds, such as religious movements, reform movements, or revolutionary movements. Social movements maybe distinguished with institutions: social movement is the effort by an association to bring about a change in the society. A social movement may also be directed to resist a change. Some movements are directed to modify certain aspects of the existing social order whereas others may aim to change it completely. The former are called reform movements and the latter are known as revolutionary movements. Social movements may be of numerous kinds, such as religious movements, reform movements, or revolutionary movements. Causes of social movements: The social unrest may be caused by the following factors: (i) Cultural Drifts: The society is undergoing constant changes. The values and behaviour are changing in all civilized societies. In the course of cultural drift most of the people develop new ideas. -

1'"' Outside the Mi.ilticultural: Solidarity and the Silencing of Palestinian Narratives I I RAFEEF ZIADAH ·I A DISSERTATION SUBMITTED TO : THE FACULTY OF GRADUATE STUDIES IN PARTIAL°FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY GRADUATE PROGRAM IN POLITICAL SCIENCE YORK UNIVERSITY TORONTO, ONTARIO October, 2013 © Rafeef Ziadah, 2013 Abstract This dissertation examines a series of efforts by the Canadian state to silence and censor the Palestine Solidarity Movement (PSM), particularly activism engaged in the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions campaign, in the years following the second Palestinian uprising (Intifada) of 2000. Following a delineation of the broad contours of Canada's official multicultural policy, the dissertation seeks to interrogate multicultural policy's inability to·accommodate Palestinian narratives relating to the struggle for Palestinian self-det~rmination. The analysis explores the central contradiction between the multicultural st*e's self-construction as accommodating and even celebrating cultural difference, and Canada's adoption and deployment of the discourse of clash of civilizations and the War on Terror. Rooted in a critique of liberal theories of the state and an understanding of Canada as a racial state embedded in neoliberal global hierarchies as a second tier imperialist state, this study reveals the ways in which notions of "tolerance" may be used to establish boundaries and markers of belonging. Moments of erasure and silencing are analyzed as racializing moments, whereby the state reveals its class and racial character in both domestic and international spheres. Specifically, the manifestations of anti-Arab, anti Muslim racism in Canada are interrogated. The silencing campaign against the Palestine Solidarity Movement demonstrates the role official multicultural policy has played in obfuscating this racism.
