I would like to welcome the Minister for Equality, the Honourable Martin Foley, MP, and Ms Rebecca Falkingham, Deputy Secretary, Social Policy and Service Delivery Reform, from the Department of Premier and Cabinet. All evidence is taken by the committee under the provisions of the Parliamentary Committees Act, attracts parliamentary privilege and is protected from judicial review. Comments made outside the hearing, including on social media, are not afforded such privilege. Witnesses will not be sworn but are requested to answer all questions succinctly, accurately and truthfully. Witnesses found to be giving false or misleading evidence may be in contempt of Parliament and subject to penalty. Identifying and examining the factors that influence young people in deciding to remain in or leave the rural communities in which they reside; 2. Developing strategies and recommendations on steps that might be taken to increase the number of young people who decide to remain in or return to rural towns and communities. We acknowledge that while many LGBTI people live healthy, connected, happy and positive lives, the LGBTI community, in general, experiences poorer health and wellbeing outcomes than other Victorians across a number of areas. This is particularly the case for transgender and gender diverse Victorians. At the same time, we acknowledge the strength and resilience of LGBTI individuals and communities in overcoming challenges, and recognise their diverse experiences. Working in partnership with a range of health and community organisations, the Victorian Government delivers programs and initiatives to address health and wellbeing issues affecting LGBTI individuals and communities. This includes the delivery of targeted services that recognise the unique needs of LGBTI individuals and communities, and programs to address stigma and discrimination which directly contributes to poorer health and mental health outcomes. -

Given the significant risks to health and well-being that many lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex (LGBTI) young people experience, extra support is crucial to help them feel valued and included in their communities. I am proud to have been a part of the Victorian Government’s Preliminary Multifaith Roundtable on LGBTI Youth in Victoria. Eager to capture voices from a range of faith communities, the Victorian Multicultural Commission and the Department of Premier and Cabinet invited faith leaders to come together and share their experiences of working with young LGBTI people in their communities. -

NSW Young Lawyers NSW Young Lawyers is a division of The Law Society of New South Wales. NSW Young Lawyers supports practitioners in their professional and career development in numerous ways, including by encouraging active participation in its 15 separate committees, each dedicated to particular areas of practice. Membership is automatic for all NSW lawyers (solicitors and barristers) under 36 years and/or in their first five years of practice, as well as law students. NSW Young Lawyers currently has over 15,000 members. The Human Rights Committee The Human Rights Committee (“the HRC”) comprises a group of over 1,200 members interested in human rights law, drawn from lawyers working in academia, for government, private and the NGO sectors and other areas of practice that intersect with human rights law, as well as barristers and law students. The objectives of the HRC are to raise awareness about human rights issues and provide education to the legal profession and wider community about human rights and their application under both domestic and international law. Members of the HRC share a commitment to effectively promoting and protecting human rights and to examining legal avenues for doing so. -

A Message A Message from Minister for Health, The Honorable Jill Hennessy Congratulations on holding the second Lesbian Bisexual and Queer Women’s Health Conference. I am incredibly proud to be a Minister in a Government that has a clear equality agenda and I am eager to hear your ideas for advancing equality and working together to improve women’s health. How we go about practically addressing concerns in mental, sexual and reproductive health, alcohol and drug use, and broader women’s health will be imperative. I look forward to learning from the diverse groups and experiences in this conference, and how that expertise turns into action. The Andrews Labor Government acknowledges, and seeks to redress, the injustices which lgbti Victorians have experienced. We recognise that discrimination can damage people’s mental health and ability to live a healthy life. This is why together, we have been working to improve lgbti inclusion and responsiveness of health services, as well as to recognise the underlying barriers to access, which can result in underuse of services. In order to deliver this agenda, our Government created Australia’s first lgbti Taskforce and appointed Victoria’s first Gender and Sexuality Commissioner, Rowena Allan, to help champion the rights and needs of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex Victorians. We also have the lgbti Health and Human Services Working Group, supported by a Trans Expert Advisory Group and an Intersex Expert Advisory Group. -
