Visualizing the Byzantine City the Art of Memory
Abstracts Visualizing the Byzantine City Charalambos Bakirtzis Depictions of cities: in the icon “Allegory of Jerusalem on High,” two cities are depicted, one in the foothills and the other at the edge of a rocky mountain. The lengthy inscription of the icon is of interest from a town-planning and architectural standpoint. The imperial Christian city: in the mosaics of the Rotunda in Thessalonike, the city is not shown with walls, but with palaces and other splendid public buildings, declaring the emperor’s authority as the sole ruler and guarantor of the unity of the state and the well-being of cities, which was replaced by the authority of Christ. The appearance of the walled city: all the events shown in the mosaics (seventh century) of the basilica of St. Demetrios are taking place outside the walls of the city, probably beside the roads that lead to it. The city’s chora not only protected the city; it was also protected by it. A description of the city/kastron: John Kameniates lived through the capture of Thessalonike by the Arabs in the summer of 904. At the beginning of the narrative, he prefixes a lengthy description/encomium of Thessalonike. The means of approaching the place indicate that the way the city is described by Kameniates suits a visual description. Visualizing the Late Byzantine city: A. In an icon St. Demetrios is shown astride a horse. In the background, Thessalonike is depicted from above. A fitting comment on this depiction of Thessalonike is offered by John Staurakios because he renders the admiration called forth by the large Late Byzantine capitals in connection with the abandoned countryside. -

It is considered to be a Cretan-Venetian creation from the early fifteenth century. This article discusses the accounts of what has been written on this topic, and endeavors to bring field-changing evidence about its stylistic and iconographic aspects, the date, the artists who created it, the place it originally came from, and the person who had the idea of mounting an altarpiece. To do so, a comparative study on Byzantine and early-Renaissance painting is carried out, along with more attention paid to the history of Santo Stefano castle. As a result, it appears that the artist of the central panel comes from the Mystras painting school between 1360 and 1380, the author of the other six panels is Lorenzo Veneziano around 1360, and the altarpiece was not a single commission, but the mounting of panels coming from separate artworks. The officer Frà Domenico d’Alemagna, commander of Santo Stefano castle, had the idea of mounting different paintings into a seven-panel altarpiece between 1390 and 1410. The aim is to shed more light on a piece of art which stands as a witness from the twilight of the Middle Ages and the dawn of Renaissance; as a messenger from the Catholic and Orthodox pictorial traditions and collaboration; finally as a fosterer of the triple Byzantine, Gothic, Renaissance expression. -

chapter 14 The Miracle Cycle between Constantinople, Thessalonike, and Mistra Maria Alessia Rossi This paper will address the dialectic between the City and the cities from an art historical perspective. I will focus on the development of Christ’s Miracle Cycle in Constantinople, Thessalonike, and Mistra. The comparison of three churches housing this iconography, one from each city, will give an insight into the relationship between the capital and the other cities of the empire in the early Palaiologan period: the monastery of Chora in Constantinople (1316–21), the parekklesion of St. Euthymios in Thessalonike (1303), and the church of the Aphendiko in Mistra (1311–13).1 The aim is to examine the differences and simi- larities in the layout and grouping of the episodes of this Cycle, as well as the function and meaning they came to convey. In the first instance, this is in order to understand why this rare iconography was chosen to decorate churches so far away from each other. Secondly, this paper will ask whether the icono- graphic scheme conveyed different meanings in different cities and contexts. The load bearing structure of the church is briefly presented along with its historical pathology and damages observed after the 1981 earthquake of Boeotia and slightly deteriorated since then. Finally, the results of a preliminary analytical study performed with the purpose to interpret the observed pathology are also presented. Keywords: Byzantine monument, historical pathology, structural analysis Introduction The Byzantine Monastery of Hosios Loukas in Boeotia, Greece, is one of the most important and well known monuments of the middle byzantine period. This monastic complex of high architectural and artistic value (UNESCO, World Heritage List, 1990) built on the slopes of mount Helicon, is a living monument that comprises several buildings, constructed over a long period starting from the 10th century. In the centre of the monastic complex there are two churches; the old Church of Panagia (built in the10 th century) and the famous octagonal Katholikon of Hosios Loukas built in the early 11 th century (Chatzidakis, 1969), decorated with marble revetments, frescoes and mosaics (Figures 1& 2) of excellent art. -

This is in the foreground. The work is concerned with textbooks which were: 1) Compiled by Macedonians and published between1857 and 1880. 2) Written in Macedonian or with many elements of the language of our people. 3) Used in Macedonian schools or generally among the people (e.g. for self- education). We mention a total of sixteen such books by the following writers: Parteni Zografski, Kuzman Šapkarev, Dimitar V. Makedonski and Gjorgji Pulevski. The period of their publication is an especially important and interesting one for our new national history. It was the time when, though still in embryo, some of the basic historical factors which were later to influence our further national development were emerging. The publication of Macedonian text-books together with their use in schools, reflecting, as it does, the independent development of the Macedonian people, represents for us an important cultural and historical phenomenon. Interest in them is, therefore, not restricted solely to surveying them from the linguistic and pedagogical viewpoint. It is directed first of all to the question: what does the publication of these text-books reveal of our national development about the middle of the last century and later. -

Santa Fosca in Torcello and the Middle Byzantine Churches in Eastern Greece: Preliminary Comparison and Remarks on Common Features and Differences
Athens Journal of History - Volume 2, Issue 1 – Pages 43-58 Santa Fosca in Torcello and the Middle Byzantine Churches in Eastern Greece: Preliminary Comparison and Remarks on Common Features and Differences By Antonella Manzo The main aim of this work is to critically examine Santa Fosca building period through the analysis of the similarities as well as the differences with some churches located in Greece and belonging to the so-called octagonal domed type. In fact, since the second half of the Nineteenth century a historiographical tradition has compared Santa Fosca with these Greek Middle-Byzantine churches, where eight supports, piers or columns, arranged in a regular or irregular octagon, receive the loads from the cupola. The comparison is based on the direct analysis of these buildings: the structural configuration, the constructive materials and techniques as well as the affinities in decoration, occurring both inside and outside, are under investigation. This contribution offers a new perspective, from which it could be possible to study the period of erection of the Venetian church, a topic that is still object of debate among the scientific community. Introduction Torcello is an island belonging to the Northern Venetian Laguna, which lives its golden age during the X-XI century AD: in his Administrando Imperio of 927 Constantine VII Porphyrogenitus defines Torcello as emporion mega, to testify the great importance of its intense trades with the Orient. The church of Santa Fosca is located on the island at the Southern side of the ancient Basilica of Santa Maria Assunta, whose origins date back to the inscription of 639 AD, discovered during the excavations of 1895. -

BYZANTIUM AND GREECE A REVIEW ARTICLE * A PHOI’OS OF ROM1LLY JENKINS, HYZAST1UM AND BYZANTINISM In two public lectures, given at the University of Cincinnati in No vember, 1962,1 Prof. Romilly Jenkins discussed the character of the By zantine State and its influence on Modern Greece. Lectures, as a rule, partake of the transient nature of the spoken word and rarely afford occasion for a review article. But Professor Jen kins’ lectures at Cincinnati must be treated as an exception. The distin guished background of the lecturer, and the high reputation of the uni versity as a center of Greek studies, are two factors that lend importance to the event. Even more interesting is the content of these lectures — espe cially Professor Jenkins’ attempt to revive the old theory of Jakob Philipp Fallmerayer. Fallmerayer’s theory concludes that the Greek people disap peared from Greece in the early Middle Ages. Their place, according to the theory, was taken by Slavs, who invaded the country between 577 and 615 A.
