Chris Warkentin Chair, House of Commons Standing Committee on Access to Information, Privacy and Ethics (ETHI)

Re: Canadian Chamber of Commerce Bill C-11 Submission

Dear Mr. Warkentin:

The Canadian Chamber of Commerce represents 200,000 businesses of all sizes across the country, in all sectors of the economy. This includes a network of 450 chambers of commerce and boards of trade. In advance of the ETHI committee taking up its study, we are pleased to share our comments on Bill C-11, An Act to enact the Consumer Privacy Protection Act (CPPA) and the Personal Information and Data Protection Tribunal Act (PIDPTA) and to make consequential and related amendments to other Acts.

This submission proposes changes that are critical to ensuring that the legislation strikes the right balance between protecting consumers and promoting the ability of firms to innovate and compete by responsibly and securely using data. This is particularly important to ensure that companies do not face a complex patchwork of privacy rules across the country.

Additionally, the Canadian Chamber wishes to express our interest in being a witness to appear before the ETHI Committee once it begins its study on Bill C-11.

Regards,
