Spring 2011. viii ABSTRACT OF THE DISSERTATION “Socrates and the True Political Craft in the Gorgias” By Jonathan Mitchell Shoemaker Doctor of Philosophy in Philosophy University of California, Irvine, 2015 Associate Professor Casey Perin, Chair In the Apology, Socrates claims he is better off than others because he knows he does not know. This is commonly called “Socratic ignorance.” To many, Socratic ignorance is incompatible with the possession of moral knowledge. Indeed, Socrates’ behavior in the Socratic dialogues appears to support this view: he affirms his ignorance, cross-examines those who wrongly think themselves to be wise, and refutes them. It looks as if he exposes others’ ignorance because he lacks knowledge and cannot teach. In the Gorgias, however, Socrates is much different. At a vital moment in the dialogue, he declares that he is the only one of his contemporaries to take up what he calls the “true political craft.” But how is Socratic ignorance consistent with the practice of the political craft? Unfortunately, scholars have failed to fully appreciate the importance of Socrates’ claim in the Gorgias. In this thesis, I argue that Socrates’ claim to practice the true political craft is a central claim in the work, since he believes that his style of dialectic is the craft of justice, which is one of the branches of the true political craft. ix My stance, however, appears to conflict with Socrates’ theory of punishment in the Gorgias. In many passages, Socrates identifies justice with the expertise of the judge, not the expertise of the dialectician. I argue

(For those who know, these two things coincide—this is real power.) 1.6 Things are either good (agathon), bad (kakon), or indifferent (metaxu [= in between], adiaphora). We avoid what is bad, choose or seek what is good, and use indifferents as a means for good. 1.7 Everyone does things in pursuit of good. 1.8 We want (boulesthai) good things because they are in our interest (ōphelima). CALLICLES His boyfriend Demos, son of Plato’s stepfather Pyrilampes, was in Dodds’s words (Plato: Gorgias, p., relying here primarily on Aristophanes’ Wasps ) ‘a leading beauty about ’. On usual assumptions about relative ages of lover and beloved, we might infer that Callicles was probably in his mid to late twen- ties at the same point in time. Although his ambition to succeed in politics makes Socrates describe him as lover of the Athenian demos (punning on Demos), this behaviour must be interpreted as opportunistic on Callicles’ part. The views Plato attributes to him are anything but democratic. And it is probably significant that of the friends of Callicles mentioned at c, one at least – Andron – is known to have been a member of the short-lived oligarchic regime of the Four Hundred in , and the other two probably to be identified with Athenians known from other evidence to have been wealthy men. There is no trace of Callicles in history outside the Gorgias. It seems likely that for whatever reason his ambitions were unfulfilled.     PHI 515: Topics in the History of Philosophy Hendrik Lorenz and Benjamin Morison Galen’s Outline of Empiricism In this short treatise, Galen provides a fairly detailed presentation of the views of an ancient medical school according to which medical knowledge, the knowledge by possessing which one is a medical doctor, is just a matter of experience, without reason, conceived of as a power to grasp imperceptible essences or natures of things, playing any role either in the constitution or in the formation of such knowledge. We want to understand this way of thinking about medical knowledge in its own right by carefully studying Galen’s treatise. But we also want to study it in the broader context of ancient theories and debates about the nature of expert knowledge. Medical Empiricism needs to be understood in part as a reaction to the high-powered theoretical conceptions of reason introduced or relied on by Plato, Aristotle, and the Stoics, to the effect that reason is a power to grasp imperceptible natures of things and to grasp imperceptible relations such as logical consequence and incompatibility. But it also needs to be understood as presupposing and building on a tradition of thinkers who held that expert knowledge was just a matter of observation, memory, and experience, like Polus (Aristotle, Metaphysics A 1, 981a3-5) and Alcmaeon of Croton (?) (Phaedo 96 b). In fact, Medical Empiricism is the most fully articulated or anyhow the best- preserved example of this tradition that is available to us. Another kind of context that is relevant background to a study of Medical Empiricism is the context of debates among it and its rival medical schools, namely various forms of Rationalism, and Methodism.

    2 Historical Review I: From Ancient Greece through Rome This chapter traces the evolution of thought on style from Ancient Greece through the end of antiquity, emphasizing primary texts and interpretations by contemporary historians. Teachers may want to consult the classical treatises described here to develop a sense of what style has meant to different rhetoricians over time. Most of the authors of these treatises were themselves educators and, even if they do not provide particular instructions about how to teach style, their discus- sions of this canon directly impact promoting the value of style in con- temporary college classrooms. These treatises take a range of positions regarding the importance of style to the overall theorizing and teach- ing of rhetoric and writing. Some treatises address style as a small part of a larger rhetorical system, some discuss style as a substantial means of developing arguments, and others are devoted entirely to style, and see it as the most central aspect of effective discourse. Aristotle treated style as one small component of rhetoric, and em- phasized clarity and plainness. By contrast, later rhetoricians such as Demetrius, Longinus, and (much later) Erasmus elevated style as a significant rhetorical tool, encouraging students to develop a wide rep- ertoire of rhetorical devices to enhance their persuasiveness with dif- ferent audiences. The Roman rhetorician Quintilian’s Education of the Orator remains the most thorough and comprehensive catalog of sty- listic devices and their appropriate use in different rhetorical situations. A discussion of St. Augustine’s adaptation of the classical tradition for preaching concludes this chapter.

Eliot in his popular Murder in the Cathedral wrote the following verses regarding the actor’s work: You know and do not know, what it is to act or suffer. You know and do not know, that acting is suffering, and suffering action. Neither does the actor suffer nor the patient act. But both are fixed in an eternal action, an eternal patience. These verses of T.S. Eliot connect acting with human suffering, a roman- tic metaphor in which the poet equates the dramatic actor with the human being. With these poetic words the author is no doubt trying to bestow dig- nity upon a despised job, but can this positive vision of the actor be traced in all periods? I think it cannot. A brief review of Aristotle’s, Plato’s, and Plu- tarch’s opinions in this respect seems to support this assumption, insofar as in their view the tragic actor is far from being a respectable person. To begin with, he modifies the immortal texts of tragedies. Then, he acts as a sorcerer by infusing diverse feelings in the audience, without taking into consider- ation whether audiences like it or not. Finally, the actor uses words for his own advantage. Consequently, we gather that, according to these views, the actor is regarded as a sort of sophist, namely as someone with special skills who is interested in the form only, and not in the meaning behind it.

    Aristotle’s Notion of Experience by Pavel Gregorić and Filip Grgić (Zagreb) Abstract: Aristotle’s notion of experience plays an important role in his epistemology as the link between perception and memory on the one side, and higher cognitive capacities on the other side. However, Aristotle does not say much about it, and what he does say seems inconsistent. Notably, some passages suggest that it is a non-rational capacity, others that it is a rational capacity and that it provides the principles of science. This paper presents a unitary account of experience. It explains how experience grows from perception and memory into a rational capacity, and in what way it provides the principles. 1. The Problem with Aristotle’s Notion of Experience “The first to arrive at a definition of experience,” wrote W. H. Heinemann, “seems to be Aristotle”1. This is a bold statement in at least two respects. First, it is questionable whether Aristotle ever produces a definition of experience. He says various things about experience, most extensively in the first chapter of the first book of Metaphysics (Met. A.1) and in the last chapter of the second book of the Posterior Analytics (APo. II.19), but he never defines it. Had he defined it, his notion of experience might have been easier for us to understand. Second, if one takes ‘definition of experience’ in a wide sense of saying something determinate about the character and utility of experience, Heinemann’s statement is dubious in the light of our evidence of discussions of experience that predate Aristotle.

Through his agent, Socrates, Plato confirms dialectic as a legitimate endeavor while calling into question the place of rhetoric. Socrates is portrayed as a director who enacts a strategy of rigid control over the structure and movement of the dialogue, maintaining his own status and that of his chosen question-and-answer structure by blaming the inadequacy of others for failure to progress in the argument. In the interaction between Socrates and Callicles, Callicles questions Socrates' motive (calling it self-interest) and his management of the situation, as well as the overall status of philosophy. As the struggle for control progresses, Socrates wears down the status of Callicles with sarcasm and affirms his own high moral purpose. By the end of the dialogue, Callicles (though a worthy representative of rhetoric) is depicted as a whining, pouting opponent soundly chastised by Socrates, who leads the discussion toward his predisposed conclusion: the pursuit of Truth as the highest of all endeavors.
