It was difficult for Genia on a personal level to see him that way – not only because of how she knew him, but also because, as a senior ICU physician, she knew that he was aware of what awaited him as well as what could happen. “As soon as I entered the department, even though I was in full PPE, he recognized me immediately. 8 December 2020 December 2020 9 Rambam’s Nursing Pioneers In Israel, the profession of nurse practitioner (NP) wasn’t recognized until 2013; it began to make inroads during the past few years. Today, there are 357 NPs working in and local health clinics around the country, including 18 at Rambam. In order to work in this field, nurses must have a Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing as well as a Master’s Degree, and several years of practical experience. In addition, they must complete an intensive, one-year course in the specialty in which they wish to practice. NPs are involved in consultations, recommendations regarding treatment and medication protocols, and more. At Rambam Health Care Campus, NPs work in a variety of specialties, including surgery, geriatrics, diabetes care, palliative care, oncology, policy and administration, and the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU). While there are common characteristics, tasks vary according to the needs of the departments in which they work.
