Trailing by one in the bottom of the ninth to No. 4 South Carolina, Wofford loaded the bases with one out before Gamecock third baseman Brian Buscher made a diving stop to begin a game-saving double play in USC's 5-4 victory over the Terriers before a crowd of 2,491 tonight at Duncan Park in Spartanburg, S.C.

Buscher landed on the third base bag as he dove to stop a grounder by Brian Casey. He then got up and fired across the diamond to complete the game-ending double play.

Facing Gamecock closer Blake Taylor, who picked up his 13th save, Strat Stavrou opened the ninth with a single to left field. One out later, Matt Lein and Chris Cotugno drew back-to-back walks to load the bases and bring up Casey.

The Terriers (22-23) trailed 5-1 in the bottom of the seventh before opening the inning with four consecutive hits to score three runs. Following consecutive doubles by David Dufour, Steve Casey, and Stavrou to cut the deficit to 5-3, Columbia, S.C., native Tony Carbone singled to center to score Stavrou and make it a 5-4 game.

USC opened the scoring with a Justin Harris sacrifice fly in the top of the second. Terrier leftfielder Travis Wilson made a spectacular diving catch just inside fair territory to prevent further damage on the play.

Wofford tied the game in the bottom half of the inning on a run-scoring single by Kyle Raulinaitis.

Solo home runs by Trey Dyson, his 13th of the year, in the fourth inning and Kevin Melillo, his third, in the sixth helped USC build its 5-1 lead entering the bottom of the seventh.

USC starter Matt Campbell (2-2), the first of five Gamecock pitchers, earned the victory by going 2.1 innings in a pre- determined start. Chris Spigner then entered the game and tossed 3.1 innings of hitless relief, striking out three and walking one.

Culley Kline (2-5) allowed five runs on 11 hits with two walks and two in a solid eight innings of work.

Drew Meyer had three hits while Steve Thomas, Yaron Peters, and Dyson each had two to pace a 12-hit Gamecock attack. Tony Carbone had three hits for Wofford while Stavrou added two. Trailing 6-0, the Terriers scored twice in the sixth to close within 6-2. Tony Carbone led off the inning with his first collegiate homer. Lein then singled, his fifth hit on the day, before coming around to score on a two-out David Dufour base hit. Lein went 5-for-7 in the doubleheader to improve his team-best batting average to .397.

Four Wofford College baseball players have been named to the 2002 All-Southern Conference baseball team as selected by the SoCon Sports Media Association.

Shortstop Tony Carbone, third baseman Matt Lein, George Lehr, and outfielder Strat Stavrou received second-team All-SoCon honors with Lein being named the league's Freshman of the Year.

Lein, a freshman All-America by Collegiate Baseball, was named the SoCon Freshman of the Year by the league coaches last month. Lein and Lehr were also second-team All-SoCon selections by the coaches.

Carbone batted .319 with one home run and 20 RBI while providing stellar defense in starting all 57 games. The junior from Columbia, S.C., earned SoCon Player of the Week honors earlier this season when he went 9-for-10 at the plate in a three-game sweep of East Tennessee State.

A native of Alpharetta, Ga., Lein topped the Terriers and ranked among the SoCon leaders with a .362 batting average, six home runs, 15 doubles, and 52 RBI. He also had a team-high 77 base hits to equal Wofford's single-season record (Bruce Spurlin, 1985). Lein placed third among all SoCon players this spring with 34 RBI in 30 league games.

Lehr (11-5) tied a single-season Wofford record for victories while also setting a new school mark with eight saves, taking part in 19 of the Terriers' 26 wins this spring. He also had six wins and four saves to account for 10 of Wofford's 14 league victories. Lehr was twice selected as the SoCon Pitcher of the Week this season and received the honor a total of three times in his career. The senior from Largo, Fla., appeared in a school record 112 games over his four years, a mark that places him third on the SoCon's all-time list. His 13 career saves rank first at Wofford.

Stavrou, from Sumter, S.C., batted .312 with two home runs and 24 RBI as he concluded a record-breaking career at Wofford. Stavrou is the Terriers' career leader in hits (230), at bats (749), runs scored (154), doubles (39), games played (158), and walks (128). He also had six triples, just one short of the Wofford mark of seven. His 18 sacrifice bunts were just two shy of former teammate Danny Slade's career record total of 20 (1999-02).

Prior to this season, Wofford had just one All-SoCon recipient. Pitcher Lee Long garnered postseason honors in 1998, the Terriers' first season of league play. From: [email protected] Subject: Lehr Signs with Professional Team Date: June 24, 2002 at 11:30 AM To: [email protected]

*In each of the three seasons under Head Coach Steve Traylor, Wofford has posted its highest victory totals since beginning Division I play in 1996. The Terriers won 16 games in 2000 and 17 last year before this season's 26, which also marks the highest win total for Wofford since a school record 30 victories in 1991.

*Wofford had four players (shortstop Tony Carbone, pitcher George Lehr, third baseman Matt Lein, and outfielder Strat Stavrou) earn All-SoCon honors. In their first four seasons of league play, the Terriers had just one player (Lee Long, 1998) receive All-SoCon accolades.

*Lein became the first Wofford baseball player to garner SoCon Freshman of the Year honors in addition to being named a Freshman All-American by Collegiate Baseball.

*Wofford made its first appearance at the SoCon Tournament since 1998, its first year of league membership. To qualify for the eight-team tournament, the Terriers had to accomplish a feat they had never done before in their five seasons of SoCon play -- sweep a three-game road series. Wofford did just that by taking three games at Appalachian State (May 17-18).

*Picked to finish no higher than 10th in all major preseason polls, Wofford placed in a tie for sixth in the SoCon. The Terriers' 14 league victories were the most in their five seasons of SoCon play, surpassing the previous best of 10 wins established in 1998.

*In their first four seasons of SoCon play, Wofford had never swept a three-game SoCon series. During the 2002 campaign, the Terriers recorded three-game sweeps of East Tennessee State, VMI, and Appalachian State.

*Wofford's non-conference schedule included three opponents (South Carolina, Clemson, and Georgia Tech) who advanced to the College World Series. The Terriers had three games with the national runner-up Gamecocks. Wofford also faced a Georgia team that advanced to the NCAA Tournament, while hosting Michigan State and Purdue at Duncan Park.

*A pinch-hit grand slam by D.J. Rhodes gave the Terriers a 6-5 win over Purdue (Mar. 11). Wofford also came close to another pair of major victories when it dropped one-run decisions to Georgia (11-10, Athens, Ga.; Apr. 17) and South Carolina (5-4, Spartanburg, S.C.; May 1).

*Lehr signed a professional contract to continue his baseball career with the Chillicothe Paints of the Frontier League.

*Lehr (11-6, 8 saves, 3.64 ERA) took part in 19 of the Terriers' 26 wins. In SoCon action, he had six wins and four saves to account for 10 of Wofford's 14 league victories. Lehr was twice selected as the SoCon Pitcher of the Week while earning the award a total of three times. The senior from Largo, Fla., appeared in a school record 112 games in his career, a mark that tied Tom Martin (112, The Citadel, 1995-98) for second on the SoCon's all-time The Citadel, 1995-98) for second on the SoCon's all-time list, trailing only Ted Toler (130, UNC Greensboro, 1998- 01).

*With 77 hits, Lein (.362, 6 HR, 52 RBI) tied Wofford's single-season hit record (Bruce Spurlin, 1985). The Alpharetta, Ga., native placed third among all SoCon players in league games only with 34 RBI in 30 contests. He had 20 RBI out of a possible 30 (.667) with runners on third and less than two out. He was also 6-of-14 (.429) with the bases loaded. Lein topped all SoCon freshmen while ranking among the league leaders in batting average, RBI, hits, doubles (15), total bases (114), and on-base percentage (.446).

Stavrou batted .312 with two home runs and 24 RBI as he concluded a record-breaking career at Wofford. Stavrou is the Terriers' career leader in hits (230), at bats (749), runs scored (154), doubles (39), games played (158), and walks (128). He also had six triples, just one short of the Wofford mark of seven. His 18 sacrifice bunts were three shy of former teammate Danny Slade's career record total of 21 (1999-02). Stavrou topped the SoCon this season with 41 walks.

*Carbone had a .319 average with one home run and 20 RBI while providing stellar defense in starting all 57 games. The junior from Columbia, S.C., earned SoCon Player of the Week honors when he went 9-for-10 at the plate in a three- game sweep of East Tennessee State.

*The Terriers garnered three SoCon Pitcher of the Week selections (Lehr, Feb. 1-17 and Mar. 18-24; Culley Kline, May 13-19) as well as one Player of the Week accolade (Carbone, Mar. 4-10).

*Kline received the weekly league honor following his complete-game four-hit shutout in a 10-0 victory at Appalachian State. The 6-foot-7 southpaw from Lone Tree, Iowa, struck out five and walked three. Kline was very effective in a tough 5-4 loss to No. 4 South Carolina (May 1). He allowed five runs on 11 hits with two strikeouts and two walks in eight innings. Kline limited USC to single runs in five separate innings to give Wofford its chance to win the game late. Kline did not allow an earned run over his last 11 innings on the season, surrendering just six hits in that stretch.

*Freshman catcher Scott Holloway started all but one of Wofford's 57 games this season. The Marietta, Ga., native and defensive whiz frequently caught all 27 innings during conference weekends and threw out 25.3 percent of opposing base stealers.

*Southpaws Nick Hewitt and Andy Halligan both recorded career firsts in the Terriers' most important game of the year. With Wofford needing a win in its final regular- season contest to advance to the SoCon Tournament, Hewitt tossed a scoreless eighth inning to post his first collegiate win while Halligan came on to escape a ninth- inning jam and record his first collegiate save in an 8-7 victory at Appalachian State. In eight SoCon games, covering 23.2 innings, Hewitt had a 2.28 ERA while limiting opponents to a .216 batting average.

*Senior righthander Tate Osterman won three of his last five starts with one of those losses being a 2-1 setback to five starts with one of those losses being a 2-1 setback to SoCon Tournament champion Georgia Southern. Osterman's three victories in that stretch came on the road at The Citadel, College of Charleston, and Appalachian State. In his loss to Georgia Southern, Osterman allowed just one earned run in eight innings while striking out four and walking two. He broke his own single-season school record for starts with 17, placing third in the SoCon. Osterman surpassed his previous Wofford mark of 16 set last year.

*Danny Slade completed his Wofford career with 21 sacrifice bunts to place third on the SoCon's all-time list.

*Wofford increased its batting average for the third straight year under Traylor (.258, 2000; 272, 2001; 281, 2002). The Terriers had a .299 average in SoCon play this season. Wofford also stole 31 bases this spring compared to just 10 in 2001.

*The Terriers posted an 18-12 record at Duncan Park for their first winning mark at home in seven years of Division I play.
