The group, which was comprised of specialists in the fields of Marine Biology, terrestrial life and migratory birds, was contracted by the Navy July 1996 to do the study. The study included a broad land based survey of birds, mammals, and the geology of the island. By using state of the art equipment including the Global Positioning System, maps were made to give a better overview of the base's resources. The land based part of the survey identified 22 separate commu- nities and several that are endemic (found only in this area) to Guantanamo Bay.
