Course Description and Prerequisite(s) from Course Handbook: Film Studies – 149 State Course # 059930 Prerequisite: Completion of Freshman Year Elective Grade: 10-12 Graded Conventionally Credit: 1 Film studies is a course intended to familiarize students with the particulars of film history as well as to provide them with a chance to analyze film as a visual art form. This course should appeal to any and all students who love to watch movies and discuss them. In addition, creative writing will be emphasized in each unit. In the first part of the course, students will receive an education on the history of film from its initial inception through to the contemporary films of today. During that examination, students will view and appreciate via analysis important films from the various eras of film history. Instruction will be supplemented by viewings of significant films in history and through scholarly articles that explore the nuances of each point in time and how the films were affected. -

In exploring issues of class, gender, nation, and conflict by means of close analysis, the course seeks to sensitize students to the cultural context of these films and the changing socio-political and historical climates in which they arose. Special attention will be paid to the issue of film style. We will also reflect on what constitutes the “canon” when discussing films, especially those of recent vintage. Abstract This thesis will discuss the emerging influence of film review aggregators and their effect on the changing landscape for reviews in the film industry. Specifically, this study will look at the top 150 domestic grossing films of 2010 to empirically study the effects of two specific review aggregators. A time-delayed approach to regression analysis is used to measure the influencing effects of these aggregators in the long run. Subsequently, other factors crucial to predicting film success are also analyzed in the context of sustained earnings. -
