View Shiloh's House Call (August 2021) SHILOH BIBLE CHURCH ouse all August 2021 CelebratingH Our Sesquiecentennial C & Golden Anniversaries Vol. 26, No. 3 … from Pastor Lyon’s desk It is difficult to imagine, but the days of summer are slipping by quickly! Soon our children will be back to school, and we will be gearing up for the activities of fall. I am excited about the opportunities for outreach and growth within the next couple of months. Let me tell you about two of them. Shiloh has the privilege of sharing the good news of Jesus Christ at the Bloomsburg Fair. We will be conducting a morning worship service at the Band Shell on the first Sunday of Fair, September 26, and we will be sharing the gospel each day at our church tent on the grounds from Saturday, September 25 to Saturday, October 2. Fairgoers will be invited to spin the Wheel of Good News, answer a Bible trivia question, win a prize, and receive literature about trusting in Christ for eternal life. Please consider taking part in this unique program of evangelism! During 2021, Shiloh is celebrating its 150th anniversary as a local church in Almedia and its 50th anniversary as an independent Bible church. The next anniversary celebration will be held on August 28-29. A “son of Shiloh” -- Charlie Dyer -- will be our guest speaker. Dr. Dyer is the former Provost of Moody Bible Institute in Chicago. Additionally, Charlie was an Associate Pastor at Grace Bible Church in Sun City, Arizona. Presently, Charlie hosts a weekly program for Moody Radio. (Charlie’s show is The Land and The Book. You can hear it on WRGN 101.5 FM on Saturdays at 3:00 p.m. and on WPGM 96.7 FM on Saturdays at 7:10 a.m. and Sundays at 12:07 p.m.) Charlie and his wife, Kathy, will be joining us for this momentous occasion. Take a moment right now to mark your calendar and plan to join us for these exciting times of outreach and growth! “… and you will be my witnesses” ~ Acts 1:8 “But grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior …” ~ 2 Peter 3:18 Executive Pastor News 2 Who’s in the Kitchen? 7 Board of Elders 3 Director of Worship Arts 8 Weddings / Deaths 3 Board of Missions Update 9 Board of Deacons 4 Outreach & Evangelism 10 Treasurer’s Report 4 Shiloh Adult Choir News 10 Christian Education Info 5 Shiloh 4:12 Student Ministries 11 Thank You Notes 6 Shiloh’s New Photo Directory 11 Thank You Notes 7 PRAY FOR ONE ANOTHER! PRAY FOR ONE ANOTHER. 1 From Our Executive Pastor -- Bob Lehman Exciting Times It is so very satisfying to see Shiloh emerging from what is arguably one of the most difficult years in our church history. Faces that have not been seen for many months are reappearing and new faces are appearing. Sunday school classes and mid-week small groups have once again become part of our weekly routine. The Happy Group is meeting at Morris Family Restaurant for breakfast twice a month with the hope of restarting their monthly covered dish soon. The choir has started practicing, and there is once again talk of our fall festival and the Bloomsburg Fair Ministry. As we enter a post-COVID culture, there are several changes that have taken place. The renovation of the Worship Center and the introduction of Matt Verstraeten as our director of Worship have helped to enhance our worship experience. Numerous upgrades to our web pages and social media sites have taken place as well. Another change is apparent as you look around at our current church family. The change I am referring to is somewhat less exciting than the ones I previously pointed out. What I am referring to is the lack of young married couples and young adults in our congregation. I mention this for two primary reasons. First, we realize the importance of having young parents and parents-to-be being firmly grounded in the word of God, of knowing Christ as their Savior and Lord, and of being committed to raising their children up in the Lord. Secondly, we realize that they are the segment of our congregation that represents the future of Shiloh Bible Church. I love our church, and I am sure that you love her as well. We love her because of the important role she has played in helping us to cultivate a closer walk with our Lord. We also realize that she can do the same for so many others in our community who are hurting and in need of direction and purpose in their lives; purpose and direction that can only come from knowing Christ as Savior and Lord and daily walking with Him. In Romans 10:14 we read, “How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them?” You and I have been called to share with those with whom we live and work the exciting things that God has done in our lives and to invite them to share in the same exciting things in their own lives. I know it is difficult and scary to talk about Christ with our friends and family, but it is worth it. In closing I want to challenge you to find one person within your sphere of influence who needs encouragement, to share with that person what Christ has meant to you, and then invite them to join you in church or a small group. I am confident that God will bless your efforts, and you will be glad you shared. 2 From Our Board of Elders – Will Farwell, Chairman So we, though many, are one body in Christ, and individually members one of another. ~ Romans 12:5 Greetings from the Elders! It’s hard to believe that we are already half way through the summer, not to mention half way through 2021. We have been busy as we are attempting to hire a replacement for what has been our “director of youth ministries.” As we have evaluated the needs of our church and staff, it has become obvious that we need to consider a hybrid position as we look to hire. We have put together a job description for a “next generation pastor” and have assembled a search committee to help begin screening candidates. As we looked around the church, it was alarming to see (or rather, to not see) the number of young families that seem to be missing from our congregation. Young families, young people, teens, kids, and babies all seem to be diminishing in attendance. This is quite alarming. So, as we saw the need to fill the role that we have traditionally known as “director of youth ministries,” we also recognized that we need be more intentional about meeting the needs of this “next generation” that we seem to be losing from our church. So, the position of “next generation pastor” was created with the hope to address not only our youth programs, but also education, family dynamics, and other opportunities that we feel a responsibility to meet here at Shiloh. We hope to begin to meet these needs better with this new position. Please pray for our church, our leaders, and for this new position that we hope to hire soon. Pray that we seek God’s will, surrender to it, and that we can offer effective ministry at Shiloh to our church body as well as to our unchurched community. * weddings * With Our Brandon Johnson & Amy Whitfield Deepest Sympathy were married on June 12, 2021 Please continue to pray families of the following people (Daughter of Wade & Denise Whitfield) who have passed away since our last newsletter. David Hutchison & Jenna Shelhamer • Linda Kobeck (Tom Kobeck’s wife, Holli Sult’s mother) were married on July 10, 2021 • Martha Brown (Rick Brown’s mother) (Son of Randy & Treva Hutchison) • Jim Gray (Donna Gray’s husband) Matthew Fink & Rebekah Lehman • Robert Eckrote (Becky Fedder’s father, Rod Fedder’s were married on July 17, 2021 father-in-law) (Daughter of Bob & Deb Lehman) • Sue Williams (Nathan Williams’ mother) Congratulations, newlyweds! • Bennie Jubinski (Edna Mae Jubinski’s husband) 3 From Our Board of Deacons – Barry Wills, Board Member The deacon board would like to thank the Shiloh family for their many positive and encouraging comments about our Worship Center upgrades. Some of our folks expressed that they really like the seats with arms on them. They asked if we could please add more since the arms make it much easier to sit down and stand up. The deacons approved ordering more arm chairs to be added around the worship center. Those chairs have already been ordered, but like so many things these days, they are backordered and may not be delivered for several months. Two other Worship Center upgrades have to do with the livestream. There are those in our church family who are unable for one reason or another to attend our services in person. Also, it’s just a reality of our day that people wanting to find a church check the livestream to see what the church service is like. The elders have decided that in light of these things we need to have a quality livestream. One of the difficulties we have had is that the lighting in the Worship Center was inadequate for our livestream cameras, and not really the best for viewing from the audience.
