Wyndchimes Spring 2016

A publication of The Wyndcroft School

A Message from the Head of School

I am proud to be a daily witness to the leadership, scholarship, and service of our students. In the classroom and hallways, on the stage or athletic fields, and in the local community, a Wyndcroft student strives to live life with a Non Sibi attitude. Each Spring at Wyndcroft, we celebrate Non Sibi at ceremonies highlighting our students’ achievements from the past school year. This is always a special, happy time of year. The excitement of the season culminates at graduation when the eighth graders speak of how they have grown at Wyndcroft while thanking their parents and teachers for inspiring and pushing them to their best. As seen through these speeches, our graduates emerge confident, poised, and prepared to succeed at the best secondary schools and beyond, carrying the spirit of Non Sibi with them where ever they go. This issue of Wyndchimes highlights the excitement felt at the end of the school year by both our current students and our The Wyndcroft School alumni. Our community has much to celebrate! Thank you for your continued support of The Wyndcroft School. Mission Statement Without a caring, loyal and generous community, we

2 2016 Closing Exercises

As is tradition, each graduate was invited to give a speech reflecting on their time at Wyndcroft. Some were humorous, all were heart-felt. For those that missed it, here are a few of our favorite quotes:

“I remember my first day at Wyndcroft. I was terrified because I had never been to a small, private school with really tall eighth graders. I was also scared I wouldn't fit in. But I instantly got a vibe of community and friendship. Wyndcroft changed my view of academics, friends, and school in general.” -Lily Buckley ‘16 “Throughout my years at Wyndcroft, I have learned a lot of valuable things in life. From how to always stay positive and keep an open mind about trying new things, to just having good manners, and being respectful.” -John Michael DiLullo ‘16 “Wyndcroft has challenged me, not only to become a better student, but to become a better friend, a better athlete, a better me. I will take everything that I have learned at this school and apply it in years to come.” -Anna Gvodas ‘16

In addition to the school certificates, two special awards are given each year at the Closing Exercises. The award for the Highest Scholatic Rank was awarded to Timothy Launders. Each year The Wyndcroft School produces outstanding students who are accepted into excellent secondary schools and who then move onto distinguished colleges. How do we define the students who will receive the honor of The Wyndcroft Cup? The faculty begins with the criteria of academic achievement, sportsmanship, and service, and yet they seek the student who best embodies the School’s motto Non Sibi, which means ‘not only for oneself but for the greater good of all.’ The Wyndcroft Cup was awarded to

Mary DeLan. Congratulations to the Class of 2016!

3 Wyndcroft Retirements

This year, the Wyndcroft community says good bye and good luck to four long-standing members of the staff: Mrs. Nancy Boerner, Mrs. Margaret Moser, Mrs. Lois O’Brien, and Mrs. Sandy Smoyer. These ladies have a combined 97 years of experience and dedication to The Wyndcroft School. Upon their retirement, we asked them to reflect on their time here. Here’s what they had to say.

After several years in the profession, Lois O’Brien joined Wyndcroft in 1999, and spent 17 years as teacher in Wyndcroft’s first grade. She looks forward to the less hurried early morning schedule anticipating more time for art classes, yoga, genealogy studies, and travel with husband, Tom. Lois remarked she will miss the children and families most, so we will still see her from time to time as a volunteer for various Wyndcroft activities.

What do you want to tell prospective families who are considering sending their children to Wyndcroft? Mrs. O’Brien: I would tell the parents that Wyndcroft is a small community with fantastic teachers. The teacher gets to know each child individually, since the classes are small and 'no one falls between the cracks". There is a truly a loving and caring atmosphere in the classrooms and Non Sibi plays an important part in the classroom and in the school community as a whole! It is truly a wonderful school to work at and attend!

Sandy Smoyer began teaching kindergarten at Wyndcroft and after two years moved to second grade where she has remained throughout her 26 year tenure. Sandy is looking forward to calm Sunday evenings beginning in September. She and husband, Howard, look forward to exploring the Great Lakes and the Florida Panhandle regions as well as spending a great deal of time with their six grandchildren. Sandy says she will miss the children and everyday excitement of the school atmosphere. What is your favorite Wyndcroft memory? Mrs. Smoyer: I have always enjoyed the field trips to Harrisburg. My most exciting year was when we went on the floor of the senate and sat in the senators’ desks. Lt. Governor Catherine Baker Knoll was in the room with a group of women leaders from different countries. She stopped and came over to talk with our girls about the importance of reaching for your goals.

4 Nancy Boerner has served lunches to Wyndcroft children and staff for 26 years. In her tenure she has enjoyed working closely with six different assistants preparing nutritious and delicious menus for our school community. Nancy has a passion for sewing and looks ahead to more time in her sewing room while still finding time for travel and family. Early morning alarms will be a thing of the past for Nancy and husband, Bill, as they share many retirement adventures.

How has Wyndcroft changed in the years you have been here? How has it stayed the same? Mrs. Boerner: In my 26 years, I have seen the building and campus go through many renovations and expansions. All has been for the betterment of the school and I can’t believe how far we have come. The continued excellent education and care of our students from our wonderful faculty and staff is something that has always remained constant at Wyndcroft.

I will miss the smiles and love from the children and the joy, love, and laughter from faculty and staff! I have been blessed.

Margaret Moser began teaching at Wyndcroft in 1988, spending 11 years in first grade followed by 17 years in the third grade classroom. Now, after 28 years of being one of the first at school each day, Peggy is looking forward to her number one role as “Grammy” to her five grandchildren while still finding time for her favorite passions of reading and knitting. Peggy and husband, Dan, will spend the entire summer season in Michigan culminating with a cruise in early Fall. Peggy is especially looking forward to this new chapter of day to day flexibility and free time.

What will you miss? Mrs. Moser: I will miss the excitement I always felt upon returning to school the week of August to prepare the room for my new group of students. On a daily basis, I always loved walking into a very quiet school and preparing for the activities of the day before my children arrived. At the start of the school day, the children greeting me with big, enthusiastic smiles and a chorus of “Good Morning, Mrs. Moser” always made my day. I will miss those times when former students got in touch with me and told me how much I touched their lives. Sometimes, I had no idea! The love and support I have been given by the faculty and staff will always remain a special part of my Wyndcroft experience.

Want to send words of congratulations to our retirees? Send your notes to: 1395 Wilson Street, Pottstown, PA 19464 Or email [email protected] And we will pass the messages on for you.

5 Excellence In World Languages

The teaching of French and Latin is an important part of the Wyndcroft curriculum. French studies begin in Early Childhood and Latin is introduced in Fifth Grade. The combination of these two languages in the foundation of learning has created a track record of success, not only for our current students, but for our alumni who either continue their studies of these languages or choose to study another language in secondary school. Just take a look at some of the honors that our students have received this year in their foreign language study. French Awards Each year, Wyndcroft students in grades 4-8 take part in the Grand Concours competition sponsored by the American Association of Teachers of French. Almost 100,000 students across the country take part in this competition. Once again this year, Wyndcroft has a number of students ranked at the top of the national class in French. The following students scored high enough to earn medals for their efforts in the exam: National Rank of 14 and a Bronze Medal: Benjamin H. National Rank of 12 and a Bronze Medal: Romaisa K. National Rank of 11 and a Bronze Medal: Kushi P., Brinly T., Nicholas V., Anna Z. National Rank of 9 and a Silver Medal: Olivia D. National Rank of 8 and a Silver Medal: Meena A., Adam G. National Rank of 6 and a Silver Medal: Timothy L. National Rank of 4 and a Gold Medal: Jonathan J. Latin Awards Students in Grades 6-8 also take part in the National Latin Exam, sponsored by the American Classical League and the National Junior Classical League. The philosophy of the National Latin Exam is predicated on providing every Latin student the opportunity to experience a sense of personal accomplishment and success in his or her study of the Latin language and culture. The following students earned high honors for their efforts on the exam: Fourth Place and Cum Laude: William D., Joseph M., Yogesh P., Sloan W. Third Place and Magna Cum Laude: Anna Z. Second Place and a Silver Medal: Olivia D., Anders P., Sigrid T. First Place and a Gold Medal: Adam G., Romaisa K., Timothy L.

Medusa Mythology Exam

This year, Wyndcroft’s Fifth Grade students became the first fifth graders in the country to take part in the Medusa Mythology Exam. This exam, previously only given to students in grade 6 and higher, consists of a 40-question, multiple-choice format, and students are allowed 40 minutes to complete the exam. Competing against students from around the world, three Wyndcroft fifth graders scored high enough in the exam for recognition. Mythology Exam Honorable Mention: Isabella C. and Nicholas V. Mythology Exam Award: David S. 6 End-of-Year Accolades

At our Non Sibi and Honors Day Awards ceremonies, Wyndcroft celebrated the achievements of the 2015-2016 school year. Many awards were given in the areas of academics, athletics, and extra-curricular activities. The Jean B. Sawyer Award – Colin Brown, Class of 2019

The Jean B. Sawyer Award is given to a 5th grade student whom the faculty believes is the embodiment of Jean’s traits and the qualities in which she believed. Jean was a willing worker in all areas of The School, a curious student of the world around her, an enthusiastic reader, and a positive person who always gave her best and her complete all.

The Class of 2016 was recognized for their academic achievements with the following awards:

June McKee Award for Excellence in Art Olivia DiCicco

Carlisle Snively Award for Excellence in English Timothy Launders

The Writing Prize Olivia DiCicco

The History Award Timothy Launders The Technology Award Caroline Snyder The Angeline V. Oberholtzer Drama and Music Award Mary DeLan

In addition to the academic awards, a number of special awards were also given. Winners of these awards are pictured below.

The Award for Excellence in Athletics – Lily Buckley & Yogesh Patel

The award for Excellence in Athletics is given to those student athletes who excel on the athletic fields during their Wyndcroft years.

The Daughters of the American Revolution Medal – Sloan White

The recipient of this award displays the following characteristics: Honor, as shown through honesty, high principles, trustworthiness, loyalty, truthfulness, punctuality, moral strength and stability, cleanliness in mind and body. Service, seen through cooperation, meritorious behavior bringing honor to school or community, kindliness, unselfishness, true Americanism, individual responsibility to God, home, and country. Courage, as shown through mental and physical strength, and a determination to over- come obstacles. Leadership, exemplified by personality, originality, ability to lead others, good sportsmanship, responsibility. Patriotism, defined as fundamental Americanism.

WPTO Award for Scholastic Growth and Effort – Caroline Snyder

The WPTO Award for Scholastic Growth and Effort is precisely that – an award that is given to an 8th grader who has demonstrated both academic growth and outstanding effort. The eighth grade teachers consider how far all the students have progressed over the years and recognize that one student who keeps on working and never gives up, that one student who possesses a willingness to work hard and a determination to achieve, that one student whose efforts and growth are worthy of significant recognition.

7 Lessons in Leadership

It’s no secret that Wyndcroft’s students succeed in our classrooms and playing fields. They excel as leaders outside of our walls as well. Take a peek into the successes of a few of our students as they participate in community activities and events.

Morgan Kachmar: Gymnast Morgan Kachmar is the 2015 recipient of the Jean B. Sawyer award. Besides playing the piano, guitar and participating in her church, Morgan is also a gymnast. She can often be seen at recess stretching and practicing her back bends.

This year in gymnastics, Morgan had a very exciting year. She competed in her first international meet. Morgan also competed in the State Championships where she became the 2016 LEVEL 5 PA State Champion on Beam. Morgan is pictured at right. Timothy Launders: Eagle Scout Several Wyndcroft alum have gone on to earn Scouting’s highest award – Eagle Scout. However, no one has earned it while still a student at Wyndcroft – until November 20, 2015 when Tim Launders was awarded his Eagle Scout. Tim was recognized at a Court of Honor in June.

Tim’s Eagle Scout project combined his love of music and scouting – he created a musical garden for the Community Music School in Trappe. He has been a student there for over 10 years and wanted to help them. His team built a bench, a full octave outdoor chime set and plantings. Fellow Wyndcroft friends and families helped with the project, contributing to over 176 hours of work led by Tim. Alejandro, Esteban and Tito Vidal: Soapbox Racers All three Vidal brothers participated in this year’s Pottstown Soap Box Derby. The Derby is held on the third Saturday of June each year and runs down Wilson Street just up the road from Wyndcroft. Many Wyndcroft students over the years have taken part in this fun community event. All three brothers are pictured below. Alejandro (in the #13 car) placed first in the Stock Car division. As a "Local Champion" he is eligible to compete in the FirstEnergy All-American Soap Box Derby World Championship in Akron, Ohio against other Local Champions.

Wyndcroft Continues Leadership at The Hill School

Congratulations to Manshu Sharma, Wyndcroft Class of 2013, on his election as the next Student Body President at The Hill School. (Manshu is pictured at right giving his Wyndcroft graduation speech.)

It's no coincidence that for the last three years Hill's student body president has been a graduate of Wyndcroft. In fact, the last four out of five years this has been true! (Olivia Zitkus '12, Berenger Wegmann '11, and Teddy Poatsy, '09).

Wyndcroft is proud of all of our Alumni, near and far. Each day they show the value of a Wyndcroft education as a foundation for leadership.
