Mass Times The Bishops’ Conference of England and Wales has confirmed that the obligation to attend Sunday Mass remains suspended.

During the Local Lockdown in Cardiff, Mass will be broadcast live on the Parish Website from St. Teilo’s at 10am each day. You are encouraged, not only to listen and watch the Mass but to take part by making the responses in your own home.

Ceremonies not open to the general public, for example funerals, baptisms and weddings, will still go ahead. Due to the new restrictions, no one is to enter the Church without prior arrangement with Canon or Mr Doherty, for whatever reason. This includes cleaners, florists, altar servers, sacristan etc.

At Communion time each day, we will be led in praying St. Alphonse Liguori’s Act of Spiritual Communion: My , I believe that You are present in the Most Holy Sacrament. I love You above all things, and I desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as if You were already there and unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You. AMEN.

October – The Month of the Holy Rosary During October, the month of the Holy Rosary, Canon or Fr. Dwyane will say the Rosary in the Church twenty minutes before the weekday Mass each day. Thursday is the start of the month of October, so our recitation of the Rosary will begin before Mass on Thursday. You are welcome to join Canon or Father in the recitation of the Rosary via the webcam.

Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament Following Mass each Weekday, except Friday, the Blessed Sacrament will be exposed for silent Adoration until around 5:30pm. You are welcome to go online to pray before the Blessed Sacrament during this time.

Live Streaming The webcam in St. Teilo’s will be left on at all times, so please take the opportunity to ‘look in’ on the Church for prayer at any time.

Apostolic Letter - Scripturae Sacrae Affectus (Devotion to Sacred Scripture) Last Wednesday was the memoria of St. Jerome, a day when we celebrated the 1,600th anniversary of his death.

In honour of that occasion and in the spirit of the Year of the God Who Speaks, Francis published an Apostolic Letter entitled Scripturae Sacrae Affectus, which is translated into English as Devotion to Sacred Scripture. This reflective piece draws on St. Jerome’s life and the centrality of the sacred scriptures. In it the Holy Father reminds us all as Catholics to engage anew with the Word of God in our reading and our prayer. Quoting from St. Jerome, call us all to: “Read the Divine Scriptures constantly; never let the sacred volume fall from your hand!”

Baptisms With the easing of restrictions, Fr. Dwayne has recently been busy welcoming new members to the Church in the Sacrament of Baptism.

Please pray for Joshua Waldron who was baptised on Saturday. We congratulate the newly baptised and his parents and godparents.

St. Jerome on a laptop: Intricate mosaic honours Bible translator for the digital age A major new artwork, commissioned to mark the astonishing achievement of St. Jerome, was unveiled on the 1600th anniversary of his death on 30 September.

St. Jerome (c.AD 347–420) translated the Bible from the original Hebrew, Aramaic and Greek into Latin, the first scholar to do so systematically. His 'Vulgate' translation became the standard biblical text of the Roman and is still used today.

Now a mosaic commissioned by Bible Society and the Catholic Church in England and Wales is celebrating his achievement. Created by Portsmouth-based artist, Pete Codling, 'Little Bits of God' tells the story of the Bible using the smalti mosaic technique developed in ancient Byzantium.

St. Jerome himself is depicted in the mosaic with the traditional symbols associated with him of a lion, a book and a skull. But, says Codling: 'In this contemporary mosaic, the book pages on his desk blend into a computer keyboard and his stylised quill pen, or stylus, remind the viewer that Bible reading, learning and studying also now take place online via the Internet. The Bible speaks now through the digital as well as the printed text.' Another modern reference that picks up the theme of mortality and suffering is the depiction of three-year-old Syrian refugee boy, Alan Kurdi, drowned in 2015 as his family attempted to leave Turkey.

Biblical figures including Jesus, Mary and St. Matthew are also represented. Codling says: 'The idea behind this artwork has challenged me technically as well as artistically. My research for this artwork took me to Ravenna and Venice in search of materials, technique and

craftmanship. I wanted to portray the Bible visually and convey the journey of translation from the oral tradition to the digital age in one coherent artwork.’

The mosaic stands on a pedestal which is an integral part of the work. It is over two metres tall and is formed of ten panels created from thousands of pieces of coloured glass. It is currently housed in St. John's Catholic Cathedral, Portsmouth. Next year, it will begin a tour of England and Wales.

Novena to Our Lady of Fatima Join us as ONE family as we PRAY together in our homes to Our Blessed Lady of Fatima during the Novena which will take place via Zoom at 7.30pm for an hour each evening between October 4th and 13th.

CELEBRATE Together Evenings In place of the annual conference, the CELEBRATE team is launching a going Back to Basics selection of evenings to explore the five values which encapsulate the CELEBRATE vision: Baptism in the Holy Spirit; Family; Unity; Formation; Mission

Beginning on Monday, October 5th, you can join your local Regional Team via Zoom to pray, worship and be inspired by a short presentation from a keynote speaker on each of the five CELEBRATE values fortnightly. Saint Faustina Kowalska Monday is the optional memoria of St. Faustina Kowalska. St. Faustina’s memoria was added to the calendar of the Roman Rite by Pope Francis on May 18th this year. Pope Francis said that he made this decision: “having considered the influence exercised by the spirituality of St. Faustina in different parts of the world”. The decree of the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments outlines the key features of St. Faustina’s life and are worth taking the time to reflect and pray about them.

Born in the village of Głogowiec, near Łódź, in in 1905, and dying in Krakow in 1938, Saint Faustina spent her short life amongst the Sisters of Our Lady of Mercy, generously conforming herself to the vocation she received from God and developing an intense spiritual life, rich in spiritual gifts and in faithful harmony with them. In the Diary of her soul, the sanctuary of her encounter with the Lord Jesus, she herself recounts what the Lord worked in her for the benefit of all: listening to Him who is Love and Mercy she understood that no human wretchedness could measure itself against the mercy which ceaselessly pours from the heart of Christ. Thus, she became the inspiration for a movement dedicated to proclaiming and imploring throughout the whole world. Canonised in the year 2000 by Saint John Paul II, the name of Faustina quickly became known around the world, thereby promoting in all the parts of the People of God, Pastors and lay faithful alike, the invocation of Divine Mercy and its credible witness in the conduct of the lives of believers.

Why not pray the Chaplet of Mercy as part of the hour of mercy at 3.00pm on the memoria, to remember in action the prayers and inspiration of St. Faustina?

Our Lady of the Rosary On Wednesday, we celebrate the memoria of Our Lady of the Rosary. St. established this feast in 1573 to thank God for the victory of Christians over the Ottoman Empire at Lepanto, a victory which, against the odds, secured Europe for Christianity. The victory was attributed to the praying of the rosary which led to the feast. Pope Clement XI extended the feast to the universal Church in 1716 to encourage all Catholics to meditate on the great mysteries of our salvation. Pope Pius XII called the Rosary a compendium of the Gospel, and we are invited to reflect on the truths of our as we pray the rosary today.

St. John Henry Newman, Priest – Feast In response to the request of the Bishops’ Conference of England and Wales, the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments has granted recognitio (approval) for the elevation of the Memoria of St. John Henry Newman on 9th October to the rank of a feast throughout England and Wales. St. John Henry Newman was canonised in October last year and we celebrate this Feast for the first time on Friday.

CAFOD Harvest Fast Day – Friday October 9th As we move into autumn and towards the season of harvest celebration, it may seem in this present climate, since the COVID-19 pandemic, that there is not a lot to celebrate. But we are reminded of God’s bounty – the gifts of the earth, God’s endless compassion and the love we share with one another. As our Holy Father Pope Francis reminds us, “a virus that does not recognise barriers, borders or cultural or political distinctions must be faced with a love without barriers, borders or distinctions.” As God walks alongside us always, so too CAFOD walks alongside those most affected by the virus, listening and responding to peoples’ plights with love.

This year, the focus of the Harvest Family Fast Day is Survive, Rebuild, Heal. CAFOD is launching a series of online events and resources so that we can all come together as one family and bring hope and help to our brothers and sisters affected by the coronavirus.

Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, many families both at home and overseas face chronic food shortages, malnutrition and poverty. Support for CAFOD is even more critical this year, when we are not able to have a collection in our churches. Please support the CAFOD Harvest Fast Day and, if possible, donate to CAFOD via their Family Fast Day website.

Beatification of Carlo Acutis – Saturday October 10th Next Saturday, Carlo Acutis, an Italian teenager and computer programmer, will be beatified in Assisi. Born in London on May 3rd, 1991 and having returned to Italy with his parents, he died at the age of 15 in Milan having suffered from leukaemia from an early age. He had great devotion to the Eucharist. “Jesus was the centre of his day” wrote his mother. “He had Jesus in his heart. …when you are pure of heart, you really touch other peoples’ hearts”. He offered his sufferings for the Pope and for the Church.

Carlo was exceptionally gifted with computers. Writing in Christus Vivit, the synod document on young people, Pope Francis proposed him as a model and an example for young people in a digital age. The Archbishop of Assisi has said “in these recent months of solitude and distancing, we have been experiencing the most positive aspect of the Internet – a communication technology for which Carlo had a special talent”.

You can read more about Carlo Acutis at the website of the Association of his cause.
