CHAIRMAN’S REPORT

The 2008/2009-year has seen a busy 12 months for Auckland Swimming, with the undoubted highlight being the performance of the Auckland swimmers competing for New Zealand at the Beijing Olympics and various other international meets.

With Auckland having by far the largest swimming population, and our international teams being dominated by Auckland swimmers, it is clear perhaps more than ever that for New Zealand swimming to be strong, Auckland swimming must be strong.

Whilst this is an exciting time to be involved in Auckland Swimming it is certainly a time with many challenges to be faced. We are of course in the midst of a recession, which has already had a direct impact on our funding. It is apparent that moving forward we are no longer going to be able to rely on funding from charitable trusts and other agencies as in previous years. Additionally we still face the perennial issues around limited lane space, the “drop out rate” of our teenage swimmers and the difficulty in finding volunteers for our larger meets. Whilst these challenges must be met and overcome, we are also conscious of not losing track of our main goal of serving our swimmers and the swimming community.

With these issues in mind the Board felt it prudent to adopt a new strategic plan for years 2009 – 2012. After presenting the draft plan to the clubs for input, the plan was finalised and is based on 4 main goals i.e. Delivering Valued Services, Maximising our Profile, Providing Facilities and Equipment and Resourcing our Organisation. A copy of the Strategic Plan is on the ASA website and I encourage you to read it and feel free to contact our Executive Officer and any Board member with any questions or suggestions you may have.

Whilst our major goal under the Strategic Plan is to Deliver Valued Services to the swimming community (including providing pathways for swimmers to participate and compete), this cannot be achieved without the other goals contained in the Strategic Plan. In particular we believe that to provide the proper environment for our swimmers to succeed, Auckland Swimming will need to become financially self-sufficient as quickly as possible. Even before the full impact of the recession hit, we had determined that we were no longer going to be able to rely on external funding (or gifts) for our financial survival. With this in mind we have begun working on a number of initiatives (e.g. sponsorship and new events) to increase our revenue streams. As a Board we are confident that we can achieve the goals set out in the Strategic Plan.

The past year saw the departure of our Executive Officer, Philippa Bouzaid. I would like to acknowledge and thank Philippa again for her extraordinary enthusiasm, work ethic, expertise and sense of humour. It was always a pleasure dealing with Philippa and I wish her well for her new life on the Gold Coast. Thank you also to Tonia for her hard work and dedication and particular for filling in after Philippa’s departure. Nothing was too much trouble for Tonia and the Board very much appreciates her efforts in going far beyond the call of duty.

I’d also like to take this opportunity to welcome Brian Palmer to the role of Executive Officer of Auckland Swimming. Brian comes to us from a successful career in business and we are thrilled to have him on board. Brian is passionate about swimming and the proud dad of 3 swimmers Hannah, Hayley and Tirol. Brian will be a key part of Auckland Swimming achieving the goals in our Strategic Plan. Brian will be visiting all of our clubs over the next month or so and he is looking forward to getting your input.

Congratulations to all of our swimmers over the last 12 months and particularly our Olympians. We’re all incredibly proud of your efforts and for the inspiration you provide to “our up and comers”. Once again Auckland Swimmers have dominated selection in National teams (senior and age group) and performed outstandingly at open and age group championships, collecting numerous medals and breaking many national records.

As is always the case, a swimming association can not function without its volunteers. I doubt that there is any other sport that is so heavily reliant on volunteers to run an event and swimming must have one of the highest volunteer to athlete ratios in the world. It would be interesting to see how many kids would be playing rugby if the parent commitments were as high as they are in swimming! So, a big thank you to all of you who give up your valuable time to help poolside. From working on the door to refereeing we couldn’t hold any meets without you.

A special thanks to all the coaches out there. Our swimmers wouldn’t be anywhere without you. It seems to me the most thankless of roles, but we appreciate you.

Finally, thank you to the Board of the ASA. It is a pleasure to work with you.

Ken McEwan Chairman ASA

Executive Officers Report

After a lifetime in business in New Zealand and abroad, but with a passion for the sport of swimming, I feel very privileged to have the opportunity to now contribute “professionally” to the Auckland Swimming community.

I am especially grateful for the generous and kind expressions of welcome which I have received. As always in swimming the smooth functioning of the sport is facilitated by the capable and experienced volunteers who give of their time generously. In this regard Auckland Swimming is extremely privileged to have this wealth of experience, although obviously a great number of these volunteers have now been carrying their share and more of the load for longer than should reasonably be expected. There is a current and on-going need for a new generation to step up and learn from the knowledge base and experience currently carried by the “few”.

The Auckland Board has established a clear and sustainable strategic plan for Auckland Swimming. The implementation of this plan will, I am confident, result in a stronger swimming community. This strength will ultimately manifest itself in stronger clubs, and in more meaningful “life” experiences for the talented young people who give so much to be the best athletes and citizens that they can be. To fulfil this strategic vision will require some elements of change which may not always be comfortable, but which is ultimately necessary if we are to meet the challenges occasioned by the present economic climate.

The key challenges we face include, but are not limited to:

1. Greater competition for traditional grant based funding ASA has traditionally relied on community grants to find its operating shortfall. These funding sources while gratefully received are becoming less reliable and their continuing availability to fund operating shortfalls are no longer “givens”.

2. Membership Competitive numbers over the past three years have been comparatively stable. This year however we are seeing an 11.3% decline against the same time last year. Apocryphal evidence suggests families are feeling the “financial pressure” and we cannot take it for granted that current “cost plus” models of charging are sustainable. We must explore every appropriate avenue to spread our base of membership and participation.

3. Commercial funding Our “Brand Profile” has not been strong traditionally and this does make the challenge of transferring dependence on community grants to the commercial sector, particularly given the current recessionary climate, a difficult one.

4. Product Definitions Closely allied to our brand profile is the need to examine our “product“ at all levels and to address the way it is presented in the context of our customers (parents & swimmers), potential “partners” (commercial and media), and a wider audience of the viewing public.

5. Identification of Core Competencies The club model of delivery has and does serve the community well. In challenging times it is vital that clubs identify and work to their core competencies and that within our community we foster greater co-operation between clubs, and also related industry service providers such as learn-to-swim programmes. As we do this, we will develop “better practice” and a higher quality of service delivery.

Our great opportunities will come as we spread our base and seek to become more inclusive toward others within the swim family - while this will require us to re-examine our own product offerings it will also create partnerships and relationships that will provide us with a stronger voice in the larger community together with a potential strengthening of our talent and financial base.

We have outstanding traditions in Auckland Swimming. We provide through the dedication of our clubs and their programmes the majority of New Zealand Swimming’s performance talent. I am confident that these traditions can be maintained as a foundation for the future.

As we harness all the talent that we have we will be able to meet the coming challenges ahead. I see my role as one of giving voice to the board’s strategy and providing empowerment to the aspirations of us all as a community. My thanks especially to the board, to Tonia of Auckland Swimming, coaches and their club committees, and former elite swimmers together with their recently retired colleagues, all of whom have reaffirmed their willingness to be involved in helping to meet the challenges ahead.

I look forward to enjoying the journey ahead with you.

Brian Palmer Executive Officer ASA
