  • Around the World on a Whistle
AROUND THE WORLD ON A WHISTLE Ronnie, rushing home after one of his early schooldays in London’s Islington was proud to hand over his school-cap full of pennies to his mother, especially as he knew that she needed money because only that very morning his mother had asked Ronnie to get a loaf of bread on tick. “I got it whistling to some workmen Mum and a fellow went round with his hat after I’d finished, and there it is Mum, all for you”. His mother started to shed tears and again later when again he was given a pint-mug full of pennies in their local Islington Pub where his mother had been playing the piano and he accompanied her with his whistling. At school he soon joined the school choir which held the yearly all London top award with appearances at the Central and County Hall Westminster and the Royal Albert Hall. He became a coir boy at ST Bartholomew’s the Great, Smithfield and at London’s oldest City Church, St. Helens. It was at a school concert that talent scout Paul Beverley heard Ronnie performing “The Birdcatcher Song”. He was immediately given a contract to appear in the BBC Children’s Hour and on Radio Luxembourg and Radio Normandy. This ‘whistling’ for pennies made him think he could always whistle in the street to earn his living but thankfully after leaving school at the age of 14 and a short term as a trainee accountant he obtained a contract with “Steffani’s 21 Silver Songsters”, a boys choir that weekly toured England, Ireland, Scotland, Wales.

NEW ZEALAND. >X< MERRY CHRISTMAS FROM ALL OF US >X< Oxford Talking Machine, 1908—1910 FOR YOUR INFORMATION We are pleased with the kind letters we received before this issue. There were many who wrote to say they were pleased with our efforts, and others who took time to write and answer our questions. On the second time ofasking we received letters from two members stating that they had Edison radios. One was from Allan Brehaut, a radio collector in Timaru. He says he has the model R5 and has also been able to collect both instruction manual and a service manual for Edison radios. He obtained his machine some years ago in good order in Christchurch. At our last meeting another member Bernie Bisphan, informed us he has an Edison radio which he also collected in Christchurch, so that’s two of them. From Australia we had a letter from John Semmens who lives in Ballarat, Victoria; John has a model C4 combination radio phonograph. He has also sent us clear photographs of his machine with a lot of information which is included in this issue. There are a number of other members who have sent photographs and material which we have also included in this issue -— Bryan Blanchard of Timaru on George Formby, Steve Ramm with stamps, Reg McCarthy with photo of his restored suit—case Standard.

Summer Entertainment on the Isle of Man The Joe Loss Years Part 1: 1946-50 ‘Let the good times roll again’ by Maurice Powell ‘It was a golden period. The mix of reliable old, brilliant new, up and comers, down and outers, has beens, never was-ers and some of the most eccentric acts ever seen . .’* The world of entertainment slowly began to regain some of its pre-war vitality during the immediate austere post-war years. In 1947 the Crazy Gang returned to the London stage with Together Again, and in 1949 Billy Cotton and Tessie O’Shea appeared together in their touring show Tess and Bill. Radio reached the height of its popularity and influence* and two years later Billy Cotton launched the Billy Cotton Band Show, which cemented his enormous reputation, and with his signature tune Somebody Stole My Gal and raucous call of ‘Wakey, Wakey!’ the show became the backdrop to Sunday lunchtimes throughout Britain. In 1948 Frank Muir and Dennis Norden’s Take It From Here was soon attracting enormous radio audiences, mainly due to the weekly saga of the Glum family, starring ‘Professor’ Jimmy Edwards, Dick Bentley and June Whitfield. Ray’s a Laugh with Ted Ray replaced ITMA after the death of Tommy Handley in 1949, and Educating Archie, Peter Brough’s bizarre radio ventriloquist show, began a decade-long run the following year and helped launch the careers of some notable stars who appeared as Archie Andrew’s tutors, including Tony Hancock, Max Bygraves, Beryl Reid and Hattie Jacques. Worker’s Playtime, the popular lunchtime entertainment for factory workers begun in 1941 and broadcast directly from factories ‘somewhere in England’, introduced a myriad of stars including Jack Warner, Elsie and Doris Waters, and later Cyril Fletcher and Val Doonican.

Tony Papard tells us all about the radio What John Howard saw at Hemsby 53 Soul Kitchen, Jazz Junction, Blues Rambling And more... 1 by Paul Harris THE BUILD UP It must have been in 2004 that I was working on my computer and listening on the internet to Radio KBON based in Eunice, Louisiana. This station concentrates on playing local Louisiana music which includes my favoured genres of New Orleans R&B, Swamp Pop, Cajun and Zydeco. Station owner Paul Marx was the DJ and suddenly I was aurally aware of a Fats Domino record that I did not recognise. Being a Domino fanatic I thought I knew all his material so was rather surprised. After listening intently I came to the conclusion that in fact it was not Fats but it was the closest I had ever heard in voice, piano, style of material, backing, etc. Luckily this friendly station offers the facility to email the DJ © Paul Harris whilst on air so I immediately dispatched an enquiry seeking full details of the artist and the recording. Amazingly I received a response within fifteen minutes or so. The artist was Al ‘Lil Fats’ Jackson, the CD was entitled ‘Poor Man’s Blues’, recorded in 1997 and released on Kolab records KL-9101.

If a front cover illustration is attributable to an artistor studio they will be named e.g. Heath Robinson, Huntrods, Fred Lowe or Barbelle. Some titles were published during the Second World War (1939 –45), sometimes in a smaller size when ink and paper were in short supply. These pieces of sheet music are secondhand, old and naturally enough, they may show signs of wear and tear. However, most of them are in excellent condition but in a few cases we consider that some damage such as edging tears, a shop stamp, pen marks or a signature are reasonable imperfections considering the age of these manuscripts. There are no detailed descriptions here as to the exact condition of the music listed below but please e-mail us for an honest appraisal of any particular piece or title.
