www.jcfsandiego.org TO OUR COMMUNITY It’s been an improbable year – one that netted outstanding results for our community. Amidst economic turmoil and uncertainty, the Jewish Community Foundation stayed focused on our donors and the long-term philanthropic health of our community. We were rewarded with spectacular results. We at the Foundation would like to celebrate a most remarkable year with all of you who made it possible. Our grants surpassed all records with more than $67 million awarded during the fiscal year. The Jewish Community Foundation remains the top grant-making foundation in San Diego. One hundred twenty-five community members proudly added their names to the list of people leaving Jewish legacies for our community. The Foundation now has recorded an estimated $160 million in current or expected endowment gifts, due in great part to the good work of the participating organizations of our Endowment Leadership Institute. The Foundation took a leadership role in launching the On the Go senior transportation program and engaging donors through Philanthropy Connections. Our Jewish Women’s Foundation and Youth Philanthropy programs thrived. We created strategic partnerships with national and local private foundations. Finally, to ensure excellent governance practices to safeguard precious community assets, we convened 15 Jewish organizations for the Governance Leadership Institute. Through the ups and downs of the economy, the Foundation remains steadily committed to a leadership role that serves our community in positive, wholesome ways. We pledge to work diligently and wisely to strengthen the community we love – next year and for decades to come.

Susanna and Michael Flaster Model Philanthropy for Andrea and Matthew Valji Susanna and Michael Flaster have modeled giving and community involvement for Susanna’s children, Andrea and Matthew Valji, since they were in grade school. As the children grew older, the Flasters created opportunities for them to actively engage in the joys of philanthropy. When Matthew was in high school, he participated in the Foundation’s first Youth Philanthropy program, moving on to become an alumni leader. Continuing the tradition of dor l’dor, Susanna established discretionary funds for Matthew and Andrea within the Flaster Valji Fund. Each year, Matthew and Andrea receive funds to grant – half to Jewish causes and half to general causes. Andrea and Matthew have funded their alma mater, La Jolla High School, Darfur relief, Jewish Women International, the and micro-finance programs.

They were on the frontlines of Israel’s border, going about their daily lives. Their courage was amazing and inspiring.” Through United Jewish Federation of San Diego County, Rick is chairing a special campaign to build a new educational complex in Sha’ar HaNegev that will provide a safe space for school and after-school activities. “Just as it is for us, education is a key priority in Israel,” continued Rick. “It’s imperative that we send a strong message of support to those who live in this uncertain region.” The very first grant to this special campaign was recommended by Rick and his wife Carol from the Richard and Carol Kornfeld Fund.

Bob Haimsohn Sustains Family Tradition of Generosity to Seacrest Village Retirement Communities When asked about his generous support of Seacrest Village Retirement Communities through the Robert and Merrill Haimsohn Family Fund, Bob Haimsohn, chair of Seacrest Village Retirement Communities, explains, “It’s simple. Caring for the elderly and ensuring that they are able to live with dignity and a sense of security that enriches their quality of life is very important to us. These are the most basic acts of humanity that we can perform as Jews.” Bob continues a family tradition with his giving. Brother Henry serves on the Jewish Community Foundation board and is active with many other local organizations. Their parents, native San Diegans, set the example of community involvement. Henry and Bob both know Seacrest at a very deep level as their father was a resident at the Encinitas campus.

Lillian and Sheldon Scharlin’s Legacy Expresses Their Love for the Jewish People In thinking what we would like to express in our Book of Life, we thought of all the lofty reasons that have been given and undoubtedly will be given over the years for what we do and why. They could be life’s experiences of having been forced out of your birth country as a result of the Hitler era. They could be our undying love for our Israel. But the truth is, we have always had, we have now, and we will always have a love affair with our people, where ever they may be. We hope our contribution –together with so many others – will fulfill the Jewish dream. -From the Book of Life

Lillian and Sheldon Scharlin, with their daughter Debbie Yavitch, signed the Book of Life at the 2006 signing ceremony.

For Joseph Oppenheimer, It’s an Obligation and a Privilege to Help Others I was fortunate to have a wise father who brought my mother and me out of Nazi Germany to the U.S. in 1935. Hitler had already imposed regulations that doomed my father’s business, but we were healthy and alive, while some relatives were not as lucky. In our early years in this country, I received “scholarships” and “special consideration” for summer camp. Later as my career prompted several moves to cities where I knew no one, my adjustment was greatly eased by my ability to and desire to affiliate with and participate in Jewish life. I was able to contribute by serving on both synagogue and Jewish social welfare boards in and San Diego, and personally observe the vital role Jewish communal organizations play in maintaining and continuing Jewish existence. Consequently, I feel it is not only an obligation but a privilege to be able to help others in the future. -From the Book of Life Joe often leads the Saturday morning minyan service at Congregation Beth Israel.
