November 2014 Commission Report Nancy Howe, County Librarian

Silicon Valley Reads

Silicon Valley Reads 2015 will explore the immigrant experience in our upcoming "community reads" program. Each year, the program promotes reading and literacy, engaging our community in dialogue about themes in books relevant to Silicon Valley.

The 2015 theme, “Homeland and Home: The Immigrant Experience”, will find common ground among residents of the region. It offers a trio of books originating from three different continents: We Need New Names by NoViolet Bulawayo; The Book of Unknown Americans by Cristina Henríquez; and Stealing Buddha's Dinner by Bich (Beth) Minh Nguyen.

More than a third of Santa Clara County residents were born outside the U.S. Each came to America with a different dream, but all strive to balance maintaining a connection to the culture of their homeland, while adapting to the ways of their new home.

Companion books for young people that relate to the “Homeland and Home” theme have also been selected: My Name is Yoon by Helen Recorvits (ages 4—8); Dancing Home by Alma Flor Ada and Gabriel M. Zubizarett (ages 8—12); and Something About America by Maria Testa (ages 12 and up).

"Homeland & Home: The Immigrant Experience" will include more than 100 free events throughout February and March, leading off with an event at the Heritage Theater in Campbell on Feb. 4 that will bring together all three authors.

100thAnniversary Celebrations Conclude

More than 14,000 people attended 52 events in to celebrate Santa Clara County Library District’s 100th Anniversary.

JPA Meeting

The JPA met on October 30, 2014. Actions included: • The JPA voted 8‐3 to eliminate the non‐District resident $80 fee for a library card effective July 1, 2015. The fee was imposed in July 2011 due to elimination of state funding of Transactional Based Reimbursement that subsidized net lending, budget decreases due to economy, and high use of SCCLD by neighboring library jurisdictions. Key reasons in 2014 to eliminate the fee include 1) desire for regional reciprocity as neighboring library jurisdictions do not charge our residents; 2) recognition that neighboring jurisdictions have invested in new libraries (Los Gatos, San Jose, Santa Clara, Palo Alto) and increased library services since 2011; 3) ongoing demand on staff time devoted to implementing the fee; and 4) to become eligible for state library funding for broadband. • Approval of the Community Room Policy (Attachment 1) • Increase to $25 per 4 hour booking to use the library’s community rooms. Current fee of $10 has not been revised for over 20 years and no longer is in line with charges of other libraries. • Unanimously elected Emily Lo, Mayor of Saratoga as 2015 Chair of the JPA, and Burton Craig, Mayor of Monte Sereno,as Vice Chair.

Derek Wolfgram to become Director, Redwood City Library

Since 2009, Derek has served as Deputy County Librarian, Community Libraries and Outreach. His last day with us will be November 14th. Please join me in congratulating Derek on his new position and thanking him for his years of exceptional work with Santa Clara County Library District.

2015 Friends, Commissions, Endowment, and Foundation Forum

Save the date: Saturday, February 7, 2015 for our annual Forum, the event where you can learn more about the library and meet library volunteers from other parts of the District. Our keynote speaker this year will be Robert Dawson, author of The Public Library: A photographic essay.

From: Tina Wong-Erling Senior Services Supervisor Subject: Campbell Adult Center Division Report

The following is a summary of Adult Center activities for the period of September 1, 2014 through October 31, 2014:

The Adult Center celebrated the beginning of the autumn season with a Harvest Hoedown. One hundred older adults enjoyed a delicious barbecue lunch catered by Golden Harvest and a line dance demonstration by instructor Mandy Muscolo and her class participants. The event culminated in lively entertainment provided by the Peninsula Band, one of Bay Area’s premier banjo groups.

On October 3rd the Adult Center participated as one of two host sites for the 2014 Power of Attorney Day sponsored by Senior Adults Legal Assistance. Pre-registered participants received pro-bono service to prepare a Power of Attorney which gives legal authority to another person to handle financial affairs if a person becomes unable to do so. Power of Attorney Day is co-sponsored by Fenwick & West and Yahoo.

The Adult Center sponsored a “Brain Health Seminar” designed for older adults and/or caregivers who are experiencing memory loss and concerned about progression towards Alzheimer’s disease. Dr. Stephen Cain, a chiropractor and author who has focused his studies and practice on brain health, discussed modifiable risk factors, nutrition, and cognitive exercises. Due to positive reception of this seminar, Dr. Cain will teach a 4-week workshop in January 2015.

In recognition of National Fall Awareness Day on September 23rd, the Adult Center formed a new partnership with San Jose State University, Department of Kinesiology to introduce the Matter of Balance Program. The Matter of Balance is an 8-week program that emphasizes practical strategies to reduce the fear of falling by increasing activity levels for older adults. Participants receive practical advice on how they can change their environment to reduce fall risk factors. The Matter of Balance is an evidence-based program that has proven to be effective in the prevention of falls.

Due to the success of iPad classes, a new iPad User Support Group has formed. The new informal group will meet monthly to practice iPad skills and help users become more comfortable in navigating the iPad.

Gilroy Library Expands to Six‐Day Service in January

Beginning on Monday, January 6, the Gilroy Library will expand open hours to six days per week, including Mondays. Finding ways to open libraries more hours is one of the key strategies for Santa Clara County Library District. Previously Gilroy was open Tuesday – Saturday. Built in 2012, the Gilroy Library replaced an earlier building constructed in 1975. The new library, constructed by the City of Gilroy, is four times larger than the previous structure and Green LEED certified.Staff and the public have worked to find the efficient combination of resources to keep operational costs down while offering exceptional services to an increasing number of library patrons.

Donate Food to the Second Harvest Food Bank SCCLD is partnering with Second Harvest Food Bank to collect nonperishable food items as part of its Holiday Food Drive. All library locations are drop‐off points for the community’s holiday food drive through January 5, 2015.

War Ink Project, A Unique Collaboration

Recently SCCLD participated in the War Ink Project, a new online exhibit honoring the nation’s 2.6 million Iraq and Afghanistan war veterans. The War Ink virtual exhibit is a partnership between the Contra Costa County Library, a collective of California's major library systems including SCCLD, and Jason Deitch, a former Army medic and military sociologist.

War Ink emerged out of a need to recognize veterans' service and sacrifices and to bridge the divide between the veterans and civilian communities. This is both exhibit and forum, using tattoos as a springboard for California veterans to share their stories. Stark, beautiful, disturbing, and often darkly humorous, these tattoos are visual expression of memories and emotions that can be difficult to discuss openly.

Upcoming dates to remember:

Joint Powers Authority will hold its first meeting of the New Year on Thursday, January 29, 2015 at 1:30 pm.

The 12th Annual Friends, Foundation, Endowment, and Commissioners Forum will be Saturday, February 7, 2015, 9‐12 followed by an optional lunch.

Community Outreach

The Campbell Library continued its annual tradition of decorating a room at the Ainsley House for the holidays. This year’s theme is the 1920s and 30s. The library decorated the study in blue, green, purple and gold, featuring handmade decorations by staff and library volunteers. The spirit of the 20s and 30s is heightened with jazz and a display of banned books of the era. The popular holiday teas and tours of the Ainsley House run December 3‐13.

News and Highlights

Many SCCLD staff members, including several Campbell Library staff members attended the annual California Library Association conference in November. Michele Huie and Lauren Poelvoorde shared their experience with digital early literacy resources, Marlene Iwamoto presented Silicon Valley Grows seed libraries, and Jane Cronkhite presented self‐service features at SCCLD.

Recently the Campbell Library added an art wall on the upper level near the periodicals. It has been popular so far, featuring photography exhibits by local group Foto Fanatics, SCCLD’s 100 Year timeline, and is scheduled in January for another photography exhibit. If you are or know a local artist or photographer who would like to exhibit their work, please contact Jane at (408) 866‐1991 x 3200.

COLLECTION & CONSERVATION

Ainsley House Basement CIP Ainsley House Basement collection storage room is done. It looks great. Still a minor leak that has and always will be there—nature of how the House was built, the downspouts from the gutters are built into the House and during rain, they leak into the basement on the south wall. Shelving will be installed as soon as maintenance has a free moment and Anna can begin to rehouse all of our collection items and move some items from the Firehouse collection area to the basement. Once that has happened then we are getting better shelving and collection/ conservation work space in the Firehouse collection area to help alleviate overcrowding and to properly inventory and then conserve our sensitive items, such as textiles, archives, etc.

Slide Scanner for digitalization We just purchased an inexpensive slide and negative scanner to help convert some of our images to digital. We have an extensive photography collection but so many items are on slides and negatives we can’t access them or make them available for researchers or the public.

FACILITIES:

Firehouse museum is now open! We hired two part time temporary staff to keep the Firehouse museum open during our public hours: Thur-Sun from 12-4pm. The both are graduate students looking for careers in Museums and have been helpful in not only keeping us open to the public but assisting with Collection projects and exhibit planning. Look for us in 2015 at the Farmer’s Market as we are planning on having them host the City table when it is available to have people play Campbell Jeopardy and win tickets to the museums.

PROGRAMS

Ainsley House Holiday Tours and Open Houses: The Ainsley House is decorated for the Holidays. This year marks our 20th year being open for the Holiday tours, and is one of the best years for decorations. Tours run Wed-Sun until Dec 18. We have two evening events, our Holiday Open Houses: Dec 14 & Dec 18 from 5:30-8pm. We will have wine and light appetizers in the Carriage House, live music in the Ainsley House living room and the Holiday Boutique will be open. Tickets are $15 and can be purchased day of the events.

Photos with Santa: We had our annual Photos with Santa event on November 29 at the Ainsley House. This year was our biggest year yet. The program was supposed to go from 10-1pm but Santa stayed past 2:30 to accommodate the families waiting in line. Success for us meant a long wait for the families to see Santa so next year we will implement a reservation system.

School Programs Schools programs are in full swing. The Hands on History program is almost completely full with only 16 stops left for the rest of year and most of our booked dates are double classes or 48 students. The History Detectives is our spill over program and that is having doing well with booking-over 20 schools have booked. It is a harder program to staff and due to the other programs and exhibits we have at the House, we have many days where we cannot offer the program.

2015 Exhibit The 2014 Ainsley House exhibit: Coming of Age: Campbell High School Throughout the Decades will be on display in the Carriage House and the Ainsley House from March 5 - June 30, 2015. Staff is currently seeking memorabilia from anyone who attended Campbell High School. We are looking for items such as: report cards, clothing, sports uniforms, letters, dance cards, notes, etc…. We have a number of yearbooks but are looking for other representations from what it was like to be a teenager in the years the High School was open: 1938-1980. We will have an opening reception on Saturday, March 14 from 2-4pm. We have some activities to be determined but it will be in conjunction with the DCBA’s second Saturday events.

2015 Lecture Series:

Beginning in February, we will be hosting a lecture series at the Ainsley House called History Happy Hour. Most of the lectures will take place the last Friday of the month. The lectures will be from 5:30-7:30, 21 and over because we will serve wine and light refreshments. They will be free for museum members and $10 for the public with very limited availability and we will require reservations. ♦ Feb 27: Bryan Zmijewski: Founder of Zurb, Design Company located in Campbell, will be speaking about how design influences our daily lives. ♦ March 27: Joe Yasutake: Vice president of Board for the Japanese American Museum in San Jose will be speaking about his experience as a Japanese Internee during WWII. ♦ April 24: Eugene Cordero: A SJSU professor and climatologist will be speaking about climate change in honor of Earth Day in April. ♦ May 8 (note for scheduling this is not on the last Friday) Ray Cosyn: a historian who will be speaking about the interurban railroad that ran through the Valley and in Campbell. ♦ June 26: April Halberstadt: a local historian and currently serves on the County Heritage Commission will be speaking about the abolitionist John Brown’s widow and family members who settled in Saratoga and the Valley after John Brown was killed. ♦ July 24: Robert Pelligrini: SJSU professor speaking about identity and how academic success for teens can lead to success later in life. ♦ Other speakers TBD
