559302 bk Adams US 7/14/06 12:41 PM Page 5 Charles Owen Royal Philharmonic Orchestra AMERICAN CLASSICS Charles Owen began his musical studies at the Yehudi Menuhin The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra was established in 1946 by Sir Thomas Beecham, who set about creating a world- School with Seta Tanyel and continued at the Royal College of class ensemble from the finest musicians in Britain. Since his death in 1961 the orchestra has continued under a Music under the guidance of Irina Zaritskaya. There he won all the number of very distinguished conductors, including Rudolf Kempe, Antal Doráti, André Previn and Vladimir major piano prizes before completing his studies with Imogen Ashkenazy, followed in 1996 by their present Music Director, Daniele Gatti. Based in London, with a resident series Cooper. He received the Silver Medal at the Scottish International at both the Royal Albert Hall and Cadogan Hall, the orchestra also has a comprehensive United Kingdom and JOHN ADAMS Piano Competition (1995) and was a finalist in the 1996 London overseas touring programme. Recent highlights have included playing for the late Pope John Paul II in the Vatican, Philharmonic/Pioneer Young Soloist of the year competition. In for the President of China in Tiananmen Square and at the tenth anniversary celebration of Kazakhstan’s 1997 he won the prestigious Parkhouse award in partnership with independence, in addition to touring regularly throughout Europe and the United States. The orchestra has made the violinist Katharine Gowers. His concert activities are diverse many recordings and has a commitment to community and education projects, as well as to contemporary composers. -

Haydn's Symphony No. 94 'Surprise'
Haydn’s Symphony IB No. 94 ‘Surprise’ Hanh Doan is a former AST and head of music, and currently works as a part-time music teacher at Beaumont School in Hanh Doan St Albans. She is the author of various books, and writes articles and resources for Music Teacher magazine, exam boards and other music education publishers. Introduction aydn’s ‘Surprise’ Symphony is one of the International Baccalaureate’s prescribed works for 2020-2021 and will feature in the listening paper. Students will have to answer questions about Hthe Symphony in terms of analysis, and if they are students doing music Higher level, they will need to compare elements from this work with the other prescribed work, Rachmaninov’s Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini. This resource will give a detailed analysis of the work by movement, including the notable features of each of the elements. Context Haydn is often regarded as the ‘father of the symphony’, and over the 40 years in which he wrote his 106 symphonies, the nature of the genre changed dramatically, from a work that served a variety of musical and social functions to a genre that would become central to musical life for the next two centuries. Haydn’s output proves he was extraordinary at making this transition, and throughout his career he gradually reshaped the nature of the symphony, providing a model for future composers of the genre. Haydn’s symphonies are often separated into periods of time or places over the course of his career: Ɂ The symphonies for Eisenstadt (1761-5) Ɂ Esterház and the Advent of Sturm und Drang (1766-74) Ɂ The symphonies of 1775-84 Ɂ The Paris symphonies (1785-6) Ɂ The Tost symphonies (1787) Ɂ The symphonies for Comte d’Ogny (1788-9) Ɂ The ‘Salomon’ symphonies (London, 1791-5) Haydn wrote his ‘Surprise’ Symphony in 1791 for a concert series in London during one of his first visits to England. -

570110-11bk Sea Hawk:570183bk Son of Kong 24/4/07 5:36 PM Page 24 John Morgan Widely regarded in film-music circles as a master colorist with a keen insight into orchestration and the power of music, Los Angeles-based composer John Morgan began his career working alongside such composers as Alex North and Fred Steiner before embarking on his own. Among other projects, he co-composed the richly dramatic score for the cult-documentary film Trinity and Beyond, described by one critic as “an atomic-age Fantasia, thanks to its spectacular nuclear explosions and powerhouse music.” In addition, Morgan has won acclaim for efforts to rescue, restore and re-record lost film scores from the past. Recently, Morgan composed the score for the acclaimed documentary, Cinerama Adventure. William Stromberg A native of Oceanside, California, who hails from a family of film-makers, William T. Stromberg balances his career as a composer of strikingly vivid film scores with that of a busy conductor in the original Marco Polo Classic Film Score Series. Besides conducting his own scores—including his music for the thriller Other Voices and the documentary Trinity and Beyond—Stromberg serves as a conductor for other film composers. He is especially noted for his passion in reconstructing and conducting film scores from Hollywood’s Golden Age, including several works recorded for RCA with the Brandenburg Philharmonic. For Marco Polo, he has conducted albums of music devoted to Max Steiner, Erich Wolfgang Korngold, Alfred Newman, Philip Sainton, Adolph Deutsch, Hans J. Salter, Victor Young, Franz Waxman, Bernard Hermann and Malcolm Arnold. -
