  • Dawlish to Dawlish Warren
South West Coast Path Dawlish to Dawlish Warren Newton Abbot TIC: 01626 215667 Dawlish TIC: 01626 215665 Distance: 1 & ¼ Miles Difficulty: OS Maps: Landranger- 192 / Explorer- 44 ●●○○○ The first part of this walk is along the sea wall (no cycling) above the beach and adjacent to the busy Great Western railway line. This flat path takes you into Dawlish Warren, past the Red Rock Cafe. This part is 1½ miles, however walking up to the very end of the Warren and back again is approximately another 2 miles. There are excellent views all around the coast from here, plenty of places for refreshments at the Beach Resort and the interesting Dawlish Warren National Nature Reserve with its visitors centre. The Walk This walk starts on the sea wall near the railway station. Access is under the low railway bridge at the end of Dawlish Water. From here, turn left (when facing the sea), along the sea wall to Dawlish Warren. This is a mostly flat and easy walk. There are excellent views of the coast from the Ore Stone, near Torquay to the south, and towards Beer and Portland in the east. If the weather is extreme and there are high seas you may need to divert inland. There is a footbridge over the railway line from the seawall just past the railway station that brings you out onto the main Exeter road. Carry on along the road, and there is soon a sign back over the railway line to re-join the sea wall. If it is low tide and you don't want to walk next to the busy railway line it is possible to walk along the beach.

  • Northern Devon in the Domesday Book
NORTHERN DEVON IN THE DOMESDAY BOOK INTRODUCTION The existence of the Domesday Book has been a source of national pride since the first antiquarians started to write about it perhaps four hundred years ago. However, it was not really studied until the late nineteenth century when the legal historian, F W Maitland, showed how one could begin to understand English society at around the time of the Norman Conquest through a close reading and analysis of the Domesday Book (Maitland 1897, 1987). The Victoria County Histories from the early part of the twentieth century took on the task of county-wide analysis, although the series as a whole ran out of momentum long before many counties, Devon included, had been covered. Systematic analysis of the data within the Domesday Book was undertaken by H C Darby of University College London and Cambridge University, assisted by a research team during the 1950s and 1960s. Darby(1953), in a classic paper on the methodology of historical geography, suggested that two great fixed dates for English rural history were 1086, with Domesday Book, and circa 1840, when there was one of the first more comprehensive censuses and the detailed listings of land-use and land ownership in the Tithe Survey of 1836-1846. The anniversary of Domesday Book in 1986 saw a further flurry of research into what Domesday Book really was, what it meant at the time and how it was produced. It might be a slight over-statement but in the early-1980s there was a clear consensus about Domesday Book and its purpose but since then questions have been raised and although signs of a new shared understanding can be again be seen, it seems unlikely that Domesday Book will ever again be taken as self-evident.

  • Minutes of the West Down Parish Council Meeting
MINUTES OF THE MEETING OF WEST DOWN PARISH COUNCIL HELD AT WEST DOWN PARISH HALL ON 7th AUGUST 2019. Present: Cllr C King (Chairman), DCllr Wilkinson, Cllrs K Oades, M Reeves, S Squire, S Ayre and R Watts. The Chair opened the meeting at 7:30pm with apologies from CCllr A Davis and Cllr R Drew. 3979. Public Speaking. Requests were made by 3 members of the public with regard to planning 66753 - One dwelling in garden of Churchill House. Mr Guy Lawrence said he objected to the plans because due to the height difference it would need 1½ metres to be backfilled against his property. There would also be a hedge lost. Additionally, the car parking would lead to fumes entering his property through the vents and air bricks that are ground level outside but ceiling level in his kitchen. He feels it is unnecessary development and would destroy the enjoyable space of the neighbouring properties. Mr Tom Harding said he objected to the plans because he feels it is to close and overbearing on the neighbouring properties. The plans show a lounge and bathroom window overlooking the garden of Churchill House were a young family currently live. He feels the build and the loss of the stone wall on the road side would take away the character of the area. He also has concerns about the root protection zone where they plan to build the soakaway. This will also mean that the soakaways of 3 properties will run into his garden which could be detrimental to his property.

  • We Are So Excited to Welcome You Back
WE ARE SO EXCITED TO WELCOME YOU BACK I couldn’t be happier to finally be writing this welcome message to you. It’s been an interesting time since my last one; our centenary came and went; our stage was filled not with performers but emergency food provisions; and our team were meeting colleagues through computer screens rather than greeting guests in our beautiful building. We know it’s been a hard year for everyone else too and we’re so excited to welcome you back to experience the magic of theatre once more with this packed programme. It’s only right that after the 100th year of this local treasure, our first season back should be filled with national ones, so we’re delighted to be welcoming cricketing legend Sir Geoffrey Boycott, much-loved music star Tony Christie and the fantastically funny Jasper Carrott amongst a host of brilliant acts this autumn. Fans of folk and country in particular are in for double delight as both The Shires and Seth Lakeman will be gracing our stage while there are also appearances from Elkie Brooks, Eddi Reader, Lee Mead, Michael Portillo and even the brilliant Jason Manford. Lastly, if you missed our fantastic centenary exhibition on stage this summer, there’s an extra chance to see it and find out about the Palace’s fascinating story at our Heritage Open Day event. Looking forward to seeing you all again soon! Carys Coulton-Jones Theatre Manager YOUR SAFETY We know that many of our guests will still be a little nervous about visiting after so long.

  • Review for MARYPORT BLUES FESTIVAL (Main Stage) @ Maryport, Cumbria 29Th - 31St July 2016 by Rosy Greer - Lancashire Blues Archive
Review for MARYPORT BLUES FESTIVAL (Main Stage) @ Maryport, Cumbria 29th - 31st July 2016 http://maryportblues.org/ By Rosy Greer - Lancashire Blues Archive Another year of this great festival set in the charming fishing port of Maryport, on the west coast of Cumbria. With Main Stage marquee hosting some cracking blues makers plus an Outside Stage with a mix of music and superb Trail venues throughout the town all added to the great atmosphere. Staying within the bounds of the Main Stage this year, we were delighted with class line up. Friday Kicking off on Friday evening were The Mighty Bosscats, a 4 piece blues band from Essex. Fronted by guitarist singer songwriter Richard Townsend, they had a leaning towards country Texas blues. An excellent band to kick start the festival. http://www.richardtownend.com/ The Mighty Bosscats Following were 3 piece rock band from Manchester, Blackballed. With their own style of 'groove rock', they are certainly a great stage band and gave a high energy entertaining performance. http://www.blackballedband.com/ Blackballed The penultimate act for Friday were The Stevie Nimmo Trio. Always a crowd puller and it was good to see the Marquee so busy. Playing classic blues rock, in Stevie’s own style with a full on sound. Excellent guitar work as usual with superb bass. http://www.stevienimmo.com/ Stevie Nimmo Trio The final band of the evening were The Ian Siegal Band, a favourite in Maryport. Ian played his own individual style of country blues with his full band. A great sound showcasing many Siegal classics.
