Freestyler September 2016 Volume CXIII SEPTEMBER, 2016 Welcome Back to Another Fabulous Season! The Atlanta FSC Board of Directors is pleased to announce the following changes and additions to our member benefits: NEW AND IMPROVED CLUB ICE Beginning with our first session on AUGUST 19, we will offer TWO Club Ice sessions. On the BLUE RINK, from 5:15 - 5:45 pm, fabulous instructors will rotate teaching classes in edges, spins, performance, and power. On the RED RINK, from 5:45 - 6:45 pm, Club Ice will continue so practice the skills you just learned with friends who enjoy skating as much as you do! Club Ice is available to all full skating members in good standing who have passed the Pre-Preliminary moves test or have been readiness tested by our Test Committee coaches. Off-ice classes have been eliminated to accommodate the new on-ice classes. AXEL CLUB We have finalized the requirements for induction into the new Axel Club. All members who have passed the Juvenile free skate test or Adult Gold free skate test (with Axel jump completed) will be automatically inducted. Other members who can produce qualifying/non-qualifying competition IJS protocols with no negative markings and neutral or positive GOEs for single, double or triple Axels will also qualify. All qualifiers will receive an Axel Club pin. Those who wish to test can also be evaluated at a test session (pending approval by Test Chair Tea Junnila) or at Club Ice if a judge is available. A judge’s form that you can download will be available soon on the club website (atlantafsc.org.) Those who wish to test the double or triple Axel must be evaluated by a qualified level judge. Requirements are listed on page 20. FREESTYLER, DIRECTORY The Freestyler will no longer be mailed to the membership but will continue to be posted as a PDF on the club website. Club directories will not be printed, but will also be available as a PDF for those who signed up with their membership. CLUB SCHOLARSHIP/COLLEGIATE MEMBERSHIP The volunteer portion of the application has been eliminated to focus on academic and skating accomplishments. A maximum annual budget of $2,000/year has been established with a maximum of four scholarships in increments of $1,000 and $500. There is no guaranteed funding for athletes as it is dependent on income derived from membership dues, contributions, and competition profits. Congratulations to Our National Showcase Competitors! Brannen and Drew Meekins, special to icenetwork Starr Andrews dons the earring that Olympic champ Kristi Yamaguchi once wore. Sarah S. Brannen An earring's journey When we talked to Starr Andrews after the juvenile ladies event, we noticed a pretty earring in her left ear, a small gold hoop with a crystal heart dangling from it. We didn't realize we had seen it before: Kristi Yamaguchi wore it as she won her Olympic gold medal in Albertville. It turns out that Tai Babilonia gave the earring to Yamaguchi back in 1992, and she wore it for the entire Olympic competition and for years afterward. "I really wanted to give her something special, something really cool," Babilonia told us. "And I saw her wearing it on the cover of Sports Illustrated." http://web.icenetwork.com/news/2014/01/23/67027190 1/5 6/29/2018 The Inside Edge: Sisterhood of the traveling earring | icenetwork.com: Your home for figure skating and speed skating. "I got it from Tai during a trying time when I competed," Yamaguchi said. "I wore it for good luck, and it symbolized strength and hope for me." Yamaguchi eventually gave the earring to Katia Gordeeva after the death of Gordeeva's husband, Sergei Grinkov, and eventually Gordeeva gave it back to Babilonia.
