Introduction Helen Fielding’s Bridget Jones’s Diary came out in 1996, and some two decades later its scholarly treatment has remained about as thin as the novel’s protagonist endeavors to be. BJD criticism has ranged from super- ficial to a small but hopeful number of instructive readings, and might be usefully parsed into four schools. The first is more fan service than criti- cism, largely gushing over ‘how hot Mark Darcy/Colin Firth is.’ The sec- ond interrogates its disreputable genre affiliation. Part of the difficulty in establishing a critical context for BJD is that whether it deserves to be seri- ously read at all is contested, with some calling it little more than a “decid- edly middlebrow” romance reminiscent of pulp bodice-rippers (Harrison 123). The pejorative chick lit has clung to the novel, with criticism that the genre’s books are as ephemerally consumable and disposable as the shoes and handbags on their covers (Ferriss, Working Girls 177). Maureen Dowd calls the type “all chick and no lit” (qtd. in Davis-Kahl 19), and others crudely dismiss its iterations as bonkbusters (Hurst 459), though some readings do note its fertile proliferation into various cultural forms, such as hen lit (for older females), Chica lit (for Latinas), Sistah lit (for African-Americans), and church lit (for Christian evangelicals) (Ferriss, “Doubleness” 5-6). More divisive has been BJD’s treatment in feminist criticism, which has assessed the novel vis-à-vis its portrayal of Bridget as empowering/hin- dering women’s agency. In comically depicting Bridget as a hapless, boy-crazy bumbler, whose side is Fielding on? Arrayed against her are those who find the novel “problematic, particularly from a feminist point of view” (Marsh 52). Maddison and Storr give perhaps the harshest account in censuring the characters’ “neo-liberal sneer” (4) at women’s C This paper was supported by the Research Fund of PRIME Humanities Promotion Project 2016. 264 Kenneth Eckert and racial issues, condemning the story’s “whiteness” (5) and reading its faux-postmodernism as a trick to take feminist gains for granted while insisting “that they are ultimately less important than attracting a man” (14). Bridget seems suspect of such a charge in declaring that “there is nothing so unattractive to a man as strident feminism” (BJD 20). Yet on Bridget’s side are those who support her sex-positivity—also derided as “do-me feminism” (Genz 98)—and readings which argue that benign cri- tiques of feminism provide healthy introspection while keeping it relevant (Bach 326). Margaret Atwood notes the problem that depicting bad females in literature appears ‘unfeminist’ but is necessary if women are to be portrayed realistically (qtd. in Bach 318). Fielding herself is unrepen- tant, concluding that women “haven’t got very far at being equal” (qtd. in Gamble 66) if they cannot laugh at their human imperfections. BJD makes no claim to being an ideological treatise, nor is it obligated to be one. Moreover, a limitation in such criticism is that it tends to take an instrumental view of BJD, seeing it as a case study from which to mine or explicate feminist concepts rather than analyzing the text in its own right. The fourth category, of readings focusing on the novel’s intertextu- ality, is perhaps a more purely literary one, though at the cost of interpret- ing BJD within an interdependent matrix of sources rather than an inde- pendent textual unit. BJD rather frankly follows the wider plot structure of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice, and Fielding has humorously admit- ted to ‘stealing’ Austen’s plot, dryly confessing that “I thought that she wouldn’t mind and anyway, she’s dead” (qtd. in Ferriss, “Doubleness” 71). Much analysis of BJD’s intertextuality has great fun parsing the recurring references to P&P (both male leads are named Darcy; Bridget wants to do a story on the P&P actors (248); in the movie Bridget works for Pemberley Press) and Fielding plays with breaking the fourth wall by having Bridget find it “pretty ridiculous to be called Mr. Darcy and to stand on your own looking snooty at a party” (13). Later she moons over the 1995 BBC version of P&P, commenting that Mr. Darcy is more attractive than Mark Darcy while granting that “being imaginary was a disadvantage” (247), as Fielding winks to the reader that Bridget does not see her own equivalent fictionality (Francus). Yet Austen in turn played with self-referential allusion, having Mr. Collins protest that “he never read novels” (P&P 60) and instead choose the maximally tedious James Fordyce, a sermon-writer who railed against romances (Simons 470). Austen’s family were, in her words, “great Novel- readers & not ashamed of being so” (qtd. in Le Faye 26, in Murphy 22), .

With it, new ways of exchanging information are created, enabling intimacy even without significant physical proximity. This thesis seeks to examine one Internet community, “ The Republic of Pemberley”, a virtual community in English about Jane Austen’s books and life. It addresses the relationships that are forged online, the trajectories of the community’s members as they discover, join, participate in and leave the group and the ways the community structures itself. Two main methodologies are employed in this research; Ethnography and in depth interviews, all conducted over the Internet. The character of Mr. Collins in Jane Austen’s Pridenovel and Prejudice is generally understood to be a very awkward man. His demeanor, mode of communication, and personality displease several characters in the novel and result in his inability to find authentic social compatibility. All of his actions follow a formula that he sees as the norm for a man of his age and stature. However, Mr. Collins’ over-emphasis on such a life plan is laughable as he creates a formula to find a life-long partner, something which men are expected to do naturally. Moreover, the deficits in his plan for finding a spouse ultimately backfire and further undermine his initial intentions. While Jane Austen offers no direct cues to explain Mr. Collins’ unique disposition, the combination of Mr. Collins’ disregard for vital courtship rituals, unorthodox reasons for finding a spouse, and use of feminine rhetorical strategies work to imply that Mr. Collins is not attracted to women. While many readers will be skeptical of the postulation that Mr. Collins is not attracted to women, a closer examinationPride of and Prejudice will help quell the uneasiness generated by this seemingly bold statement. Readers first experience Mr. Collins’ lack of sexual inclination at the Netherfield Ball: The two first dances, however, brought a return of distress; they were dances of mortification.

In literature place represents the topography of an area in relation to the identity of people who live there. Jane Austen’s novels can be seen as novels of manner, domestic or provincial because they represent the manners of the rural life in English family in eighteenth century. They also represent the relationships of English people in association with the place where they are. Austen uses places, many of them real, in Pride and Prejudice to create believable characters. The real places depicted are counties such as: Kent, Derbyshire, Hertfordshire and Sussex; towns such as Brighton and also local places of interest such as Dove Dale, Chatsworth and the Peak. However, the imaginary ones are towns, villages, estates and resorts in these counties such as: Meryton, Pemberley, Lambton, Kympton, Stoke, Haye-Park, Longbourn, Lucas Lodge, Ramsgate and others. Austen specifically represents rural English topography through the relationship between the English aristocracy and traditional family. Place in Pride and Prejudice mirrors the social interactions of rural English family in the eighteenth century and their manners where they live.

During the late spring and early summer of 2016 we had the good fortune to be able to revitalise and refurbish one of our fabulous sister inns, The King’s Head in Richmond, North Yorkshire. During the planning stage of this project we started to look hard at the building and its many historical attributes, at how some parts of the building had been added during its 300 years of existence. And whilst contemplating the small changes and additions we wanted to make, it dawned on me that we will only be its custodians for a generation or two at most. I can’t foretell who will follow but started thinking about who had been its keepers in the past. Therefore, we asked a good friend if he would research The King’s Head and try to separate the fact from the fable; what’s true and what has been elaborated during the storytelling process over the years. Will Swales made such a good job of The King’s Head that we then asked him to complete the same task for The Rutland Arms Hotel. What follows is that research. We think it’s as accurate as can be, but naturally there are many gaps and we would welcome any additional information. 'I deserve neither such praise nor such censure,' cried Elizabeth; 'I am not a great reader, and I have pleasure in many things.'1 At no time in the two hundred years since Jane Austen submitted First Impressions for publication has her work been more popular than in the last decade.2 The phenomenon of Austenmania has seen Sense and Sensibility-a novel that for years struggled for inclusion among Austen's 'mature' fiction3- on the New York Times bestseller list, one hundred and eighty-four years after its first publication.4 The impetus for this sudden explosion in interest in Jane Austen can be traced to one week in September 1995, when ten million people in Britain watched Mr. Darcy dive into his pond at Pemberley.5 Before the end of that year, film versions of Persuasion and Sense and Sensibility would be released and the BBC would immediately replay the entire six-part series of Pride and Prejudice.6 In the following year Clueless would be joined by separate film and television versions of Emma.7 Eventually, Pride and Prejudice would become one of the BBC's (and the American A&E station's) most successful programmes.8 Its popularity brought new readers to Austen's best-known novel, readers who, for the most part, read outside of any academic context. It is these new readings of Pride and Prejudice, however, proliferating in the wake of its adaptation, which contain the greatest significance for our contemporary understanding of Austen, and compel us to examine and re-examine the novel and its adaptations in light of one another.
