Thank You… for a Really Wonderful Autumn Leaves Event. My Sister and I Really Had a Great Time WYTHENSHAWE FEBRUARY 2018 Autumn Leaves Luncheon a feast of food and entertainment! PUPILS from St Anthony’s and The Willows Primary Schools served up a musical treat at the Autumn Leaves Luncheon in November. The event, for residents aged 65 and over in the Woodhouse Park area, also gave students from Manchester Education Academy (MEA) a chance to develop their ‘hospitality skills’. The young people were joined by 30 volunteers from MAG, who also provided guests with table service. Nearly 300 Woodhouse Park residents attended Autumn Leaves Lunches, which were held at the Lifestyle Centre in Wythenshawe on November 1st, 2nd and 3rd. “Thank you… for a really wonderful Autumn Leaves event. My sister and I really had a great time. The meal, service, entertainment and attention to detail were superb and obviously a lot of work is put in to ensure such a successful happening”. Diners at the popular events were joined by the Mayor of Manchester, Councillor Eddie Newman, on 1st November; who chatted with them over lunch (left). The event was ‘Alice in wonderland’ themed and included a photo booth; each guest had the opportunity of a commemorative photo (right). Jack Stott, 25, from Woodhouse Park, and Evan O’Driscoll, 23, from construct Manchester Transformation Baguley, have started work on our Transformation construction site. Jack said: “I’m excited about the opportunities developing at the Airport, and I’m keen to grow and develop with a reputable company.” Evan said he is looking forward to gaining employment in a role with long‐term prospects and is eager to progress within the role. Overseeing the Airport Academy graduation, Manchester Airport CEO Andrew Cowan said: “Our investment in Manchester Airport will give the north west the world class international gateway it deserves. But it will also do a huge amount to boost the regional economy by creating local jobs, tackling local unemployment and driving Ten graduated the course; pictured above with Mike Kane MP, Andrew Cowan and Garreth Burrow from up skill levels, ensuring the Airport Academy. It was prompted by the development of their Ageing Strategies and informed by conversations with tenants. It has now seen a wide range of new partners sign up and commit to embracing the principles of age-friendliness. Manchester’s Valuing Older People (VOP) programme was established in 2003. Since then, the scope and stature of the programme has seen Manchester gain national and international recognition as a leading age-friendly Local Authority. This culminated with the city becoming the first UK member of the World Health Organisation’s Global Network of Age-friendly cities in 2010, and achieving WHO Age-friendly City status in 2012. “Manchester has established itself at an international level as a leading authority in developing one of the most comprehensive strategic programmes on ageing.” John Beard, Director of the Department of Ageing and the Life Course, World Health Organisation Background Life expectancy is increasing at the rate of over two years per decade, and the percentage of the population over 65 years is projected to double over the next forty years.
