The Petition is inadequately researched in that its contents show no comprehension of the overall perspective contributed by the CFA Constitution and the CFA rules governing new breed acceptance.

The Petition is misleading in that it deflects attention away from prolonged mis-registering of unqualified as European Burmese - with no identification of the petitioners' concerns until the improper registrations were, or were about to be, revealed. Thank you for your time. We have had a long history with the Foreign/European Burmese in Canada and currently meet all C.C.A. Ann, Jean & Ivan requirements. Having been the first North American breeders of the Foreign/European Burmese (to our * Marked —Private and Confidential“ - I retrieved this from a made-public knowledge - 1986), we undertook to sell a number of our compendium of material related to this issue that was compiled and posted on the cats to the U.S. Somewhere in the interim, the standards Burmese List on the Internet by the authors. - Ed. were set that allowed no outcrosses and because the Traditional, ( not Contemporary), Burmese is an allowable outcross in Canada, a great deal of confusion has ensued. Namely, there have been registrations revoked and cats neutered, etc. Although we never actually registered any of our Foreign/Europeans with the C.F.A., we would wish to do this in the future.

We have been the recipients of several letters from Mr. E. McCabe and other breeders have received phone calls, that have informed us that the C.F.A. never considered cats of mixed ancestry. Although we would dispute this, our concern is that we are not, nor have we ever received any direct information from the C.F.A. We were not part of establishing the breed group, were never informed of any meetings, nor given the right to vote. Our breed secretary would appear to be Mr. McCabe --- is this correct? If so, we have been excluded from the entire decision-making process. In fact, we have been told what will happen and our input has not been solicited with the exception of Mr. McCabe's inquiry as to the history as we knew it. Our recollection of the history has now been put into lengthy documents alleging all sort of falsifications by us.

Is it possible to be reintroduced into a process that we thought we were a part of but have not been? Please tell us how we can in fact reinstate our status as legitimate breeders of the Foreign/European Burmese within the C. F.A.

Our second request is that again, of process. We have also recently introduced the Asian Group of cats, including the Burmilla, (Short Haired), and the Tiffanie, (Long Haired), to North America. These cats are a miscellaneous breed and will probably proceed to being established as a new breed sometime this Fall. Once the C.C.A. process is complete, we would wish to approach the C.F.A. A number of U.S. breeders have approached us with an interest in breeding the Asians. We would hope that the above process is not repeated whereby newer breeders would enter the process and lobby to change the standards as originally discussed and perhaps seek to eliminate us from the process, later disavowing any knowledge of our prior existence.

here are a number of registries in the world that recognize the Burmese for registration and championship status. Two women involved in breeding Burmese - Gail Francois and Alenka Unk - put together the following chart comparing and contrasting the standards of four associations - CFA, FIFe, TICA and the RSA. They did a beautiful job and you can view their work in real time by visiting the following Web Site: http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Plains/8454/burmsop.html

NABB MENTORING PROGRAM We would like to use this spot for sharing helpful ideas and hints on the breeding of Burmese specifically and cats in general. If you have advice to give or an experience Objective to share, please submit it for publication. We were all new once . . . To attract new breeders to the Burmese breed by establishing a program that provides The Screening and Handling of Potential Kitten Buyers guidance, assistance and nurturing to new David Zable breeders. It makes me feel good about potential buyers when they want to know a lot about Protégé Participation me and my cattery and ask a lot of those type of questions before getting to "How New breeders who wish to participate in this much do you charge?" 34 National Alliance of Burmese Breeders, Inc. A PRACTICAL APPROACH TO FELINE An African Fable of the Cat HOUSESOILING from: Rhodesian Native Susan Little, DVM Affairs Department, 1948 The most common behavioural complaint about cats presented to animal Once upon a time the cat did not live in the houses behaviour consultants in North America is house-soiling. The typical of men. She lived only in the bush or in the jungle. presentation is that of a cat that both uses its litterbox and eliminates outside of it. It is also typical for the cat to deposit only urine or stool One cat became friendly with a rabbit. She went outside the box, but not usually both. everywhere with the rabbit and was astonished at the craftiness of her friend. One day a duiker fought It is critically important to discriminate between medical and non-medical with the rabbit and killed it with its horns. As her causes of a behaviour problem. The common occurrence of feline lower friend was dead the cat lived with the duiker. Then urinary tract disease (FLUTD - formerly called FUS) makes this especially the duiker was killed by a leopard, so the cat important for house-soiling problems in cats. This holds true whether the decided to live with the leopard. A few days later problem is soiling with urine and/or stools, or if it involves spraying or they met with a lion. The lion fought the leopard marking behaviours. A good history of the problem is second in and killed it. The poor cat then made friends with importance only to the tests required to rule-out medical problems for both the lion and lived with him until one day they met a diagnosis and treatment. It is essential to establish an accurate diagnosis herd of elephant. A huge bull fought with the lion for each case. and killed it. Remember that a problem behaviour is not necessarily an abnormal one - The cat thought to herself, "I must make friends most problem behaviours are actually normal ones which are exhibited in with an animal as large and strong as this elephant - an inappropriate manner. surely nothing can defeat it!." When your veterinary surgeon is taking a history of a housesoiling But her troubles were not yet over, for one day a problem be prepared to give information such as: hunter shot the elephant with a poisoned arrow and • a detailed description of the problem, its duration, progression and the elephant died. severity • a description of any associated events Now the cat did not know what to do, for she had • never seen a two-legged animal such as this. She a description of any corrections already attempted thought hard and said to herself, "if this man can • a description of the environment: ie. number of animals, number of kill a huge animal like an elephant, I had better litterboxes, locations of boxes, interactions between animals, etc. make friends with him so that I can live in safety." • medical history (ie any history of intestinal problems or FLUTD)

She followed the hunter back to his home, and when There are 3 basic categories of housesoiling problems: the hunter entered his hut the cat crept up on to the 1. normal elimination at an inappropriate site (most common type) verandah. She heard sounds of quarrelling in the 2. marking behaviour (spraying). It is important to distinguish between hut and saw the man in flight from a woman who urinating outside the box and spraying - this is done by a description was beating him with a stick for stirring porridge. of the cat's body posture and location of the urine voiding 3. medical disease The cat said to herself, "Now I have seen the 4. a combination of any of the above strongest of all creatures - a woman!". After taking a complete history of the problem, your veterinarian will want Ever after this the cat has lived in the huts with the to run some medical tests. A urinalysis is always indicated when house- woman, because it is they who are all-powerful. soiling involves urine, and is usually necessary if stools are involved as by well. It is not unusual for a cat to have a medical problem when the Lala behaviour history is suggestive of only behavioural factors. Other tests may involve blood samples to determine if another medical problem, such as kidney disease, is contributing to the housesoiling.

A diagnosis is reached by applying criteria to show which of the potential contributing factors (both medical and psychological) are involved. A working diagnosis has the advantage of suggesting the factors which must be modified in the treatment plan. A treatment plan is then formulated. The plan should be designed to: entice the cat back to the litterbox using any changes (sometimes extraordinary) necessary, and modify the inappropriate site to make it unattractive or inaccessible.

It helps to understand that elimination in cats is actually a sequence of 35 individual behaviours, and a problem can develop at any of the steps involved. In Autumn, 1997 nature, cats have an infinite variety of sites and substrates for elimination, but in a home setting, they are expected to use a restricted number of sites (often only one) and one for stool. Providing enough and a restricted type of substrate (again, often only one). litterboxes for this may be all that's needed.

The elimination sequence: • Surface preference: a cat may find 1. search/approach location - involves visceral sensation another surface in the house it 2. dig - involves tactile sensation (very important) prefers to the litter provided in the 3. eliminate - involves visceral sensation litterbox. 4 sweep/cover movement - involves tactile sensation

This is very common. Even in cases in The contributing factors to housesoiling: • which some other factor was the initial Litter aversion: a common cause of house-soiling. cause, a cat can develop a new surface A cat selects a site initially based upon the tactile sensation created when it preference. The most common preferred scratches at the surface face. A cat may dislike litter because of: surface is some type of fabric, with - inadequate cleaning (some cats are extremely fastidious, and this can carpeting being number one. Sometimes set off a litter aversion) these surface preferences can develop - learned aversive association with the litter due to: pain (ie FLUTD), accidentally, ie. the cat accidentally diarrhea, fear (owner catches it in litter to give it medication, or another scratched at the bathmat hanging next to cat in the house always traps it there to attack it), odour (either from the litterbox and develops an association inadequate cleaning, or from deodorizers or cleansers used by the between elimination and the fabric. Cats owner) can also have a primary preference for - an unlearned spontaneous individual aversion - just doesn't like the one type of surface over another - ie they tactile sensation of the litter type just like carpet better. A nice study - a plastic type litterbox liner is being used, so the cat catches its claws on involving an experimental trial of different it when it tries to dig litters for cats (Dr. P. Borchelt, Vet Clin of - the litter type itself may be OK, but there may be too little in the box or N.A., 21(2), 1991) showed conclusively too much that cats prefer finely-grained textures. - and just to complicate things, some cats dislike the litter if you keep it Therefore, the most preferred litters are the too clean sandy, clumping types. Second most preferred would be actual playbox sand. Signs of litter aversion: Third would be the finer traditional clay - cat avoids litter completely litters. Last would be products such as - cat uses litter, but scratches at the sides of the box, on the floor, or other objects wood shavings and recycled newspaper. nearby instead of in the litter - cat uses litter, but shakes paws a lot during and after using it There are some cats who actually prefer a - cat does not dig in litter smooth surface - they will be the ones - cat straddles the box, putting feet up on edge of box to avoid touching the litter eliminating on a floor surface, in the sink, - cat uses litter, then bolts out of box quickly bathtub, etc. They may respond to an - cat at or talks to litterbox empty litter box, or one with a bit of torn - cat starts urinating in box in normal squatting position, but ends up standing up newspaper. You can then try adding and spraying urine litter very slowly and in small amounts to the box. Carpeting presents a particular There are several steps that can be taken to correct the problem, but first ensure that problem as it is almost impossible to clean. the litter is clean. Then be sure you are not using a deodorized litter - some cats find Urine odour is very pervasive and usually these scents very distasteful and review your cleansing procedure. A product with an soaks into not only the carpet, but the odour used in the cleaning process may cause a lingering smell - change your underlay, and even the flooring routine, if not in a cattery, try using only very very hot water and no cleanser. If you underneath. For lightly soiled areas, clean are using a litterbox liner, stop. Try different types of litter: you may have to try with a odour eliminator such as KOE or quite a few systematically (for 7 to 10 days each) to find the right one (you may have Outright, or get a professional carpet to try a wide variety of different materials). Cats can spontaneously decide that a cleaner in (most home steam cleaners litter they have happily been using for years is no longer attractive to them. If you won't help). In many cases, the carpeting want to make changes to the litterbox filler or location, always make these changes must be gradually. For instance, if you decide for whatever reason you want to use a new litter, first use an additional box with the new litter and gradually take away the old ripped out or the area re-floored in another litter once the cat is happily using the new one. For changing the location of material. It may be necessary to place a litterboxes, the same applies - add a new litterbox in the new location, and gradually piece of scrap carpet in the litterbox itself move the old box day by day to the new location (means you will have a litterbox in to get the cat back to the box or to build a unwanted places but it's only temporary). It may be necessary to block access to areas previously soiled (ie. keep bedroom ATTITUDE door closed, cover the soil in plant pots with a fitted mesh or add lots of pebbles, move a large object on top of a soiled area). Areas can be made undesirable by "The longer I live, the more I realize the impact many tactics: covering the area with tinfoil (don't use plastic, many cats love to of attitude on life. Anxiety-related causes: you must always consider the possibility that stress or anxiety is contributing to the house-soiling (still, this is not as frequent a cause of house-soiling as most people think).

Types of stress:

Separation anxiety: previously recognized only in dogs, now believed to occur in cats. Usually occurs when there has been a prolonged absence of an owner, ie over 37 8 hrs. The house-soiling will occur 8-12 hours after the owner's departure, which is Autumn, 1997 totally opposite to dogs, where the behaviour occurs right after departure. The behaviour may involve diarrhea and destructive events in addition to house-soiling. It can be treated similarly to the way dogs are treated (ie training through graduated departures - requires a lot of patience and time) and with some medications. BEAMED FROM THE BRIGHT CATTERY IN THE SKY Fear: cats that are naturally shy or fearful may not want to *come out into the open* Michael Hatwell to go to the litterbox. In some cases, there is an identifiable fearful stimulus, ie a certain person, cat, dog, object, sound that can be modified or removed.
