WBCA Honors the 2010 RUSSELL ATHLETIC/WBCA Division I Regional Coaches of the Year ATLANTA, Ga. (March 16, 2010) -- The Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) is proud to announce the 2010 RUSSELL ATHLETIC/WBCA Regional Coach of the Year winners for National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Division I. Below are the RUSSELL ATHLETIC/WBCA Regional Coaches of the Year winners listed by region: NCAA Division I Region Coach Institution Region 1 Geno Auriemma University of Connecticut Region 2 Sue Semrau Florida State University Region 3 Matthew Mitchell University of Kentucky Region 4 Joe Foley Univ. of Arkansas, Little Rock Region 5 Connie Yori University of Nebraska Region 6 Robin Pingeton Illinois State University Region 7 Adrian Wiggins Fresno State Region 8 Tara VanDerveer Stanford University The winners are selected through a two-level process. The first level is by region, in which coaches from each WBCA geographical region vote for their respective top coach. If a coach has been selected as Regional Coach of the Year, they advance as a finalist to the national level of the selection process along with the other RUSSELL ATHLETIC/WBCA Regional Coaches of the Year in their respective division. The winner of the RUSSELL ATHLETIC/WBCA National Coach of the Year for Division I will be honored on Monday, April 5, at 12:30 p.m. CT during the RUSSELL ATHLETIC/WBCA National Coach of the Year Luncheon in the Marriott Rivercenter. The luncheon is part of the 2010 WBCA National Convention, held in conjunction with the NCAA® Womenâ€™s Final Four®. Head Coach Eighth Year
HEAD COACH EIGHTH YEAR “Our lives are not determined by what happens to us, but by how we react to what happens; not by what life brings to us, but by the attitude we bring to life. A positive attitude causes a chain reaction of positive thoughts, events and outcomes. It is a catalyst...a spark that creates extraordinary results.” For Seminole head coach Sue Semrau, a positive outlook with a positive attitude will be essential as she embarks on her eighth season at the helm of the Florida State program. While the Florida State women’s basketball team has made great strides on the court in recent years, it has been dealt more than its share of heartache off of the court, especially over the past two years. Semrau, however, has chosen to respectfully move forward and will rely on her faith and her strength as she leads the Florida State women’s basketball program onward as well. “True leaders are not those who strive to be first but those who are first to strive and who give their all for the success of the team. True leaders are first to see the need, envision the plan, and empower the team for action. By the strength of the leader’s commitment, the power of the team is unleashed.” Semrau has tried to pattern her coaching philosophies after coaches that she admires and respects. One of those coaches is Florida State’s very own Bobby Bowden. Sure, who wouldn’t want to imitate the actions of a coaching legend?
