For 2008, SAGE’s continues to emphasize editorial quality and development across our journals program, so we are especially pleased that the JOURNAL OF MANAGEMENT (JOM) continues to consistently publish high quality content under the capable guidance of Editor Russell Cropanzano. Below you will find areas where we are currently working to make JOM even more successful, as well as ways the editorial board can help ensure that JOM remains a journal of choice for top authors to both submit their articles and to search for relevant content for citation.

SAGE’s Role in the Development of JOM • Thomson Scientific ranking. Publishing ahead of print, distribution of press releases announcing articles of special import, and vigorously promoting online usage will help to increase JOM’s citations and ranking in the ®. • Technological Advancements. In 200, SAGE plans to transition most journals to SAGETRACK and publish ahead of print to simplify and streamline the review process and give articles the chance to be read and cited as soon as they are accepted into the journal. Our publish ahead of print feature is already available for JOM, and we will be transitioning JOM to SAGETRACK this summer concurrently with the editor transition. • Increasing electronic usage and citations. We will continue to arrange free‐access trials and other promotions to encourage online usage. With JOM’s backfile available online, readers can access even more of JOM’s content, increasing overall usage. For 2008, we will begin introducing recommended reading lists to journal homepages to give readers an overview of some of the best papers published in JOM. • Journal Email Alerts. A major objective in 2008 for SAGE is to promote our Journal Email Alerts, a vehicle for increasing usage and citations. Our Journal Email Alerts are a sure way of driving users to JOM’s webpage

Circulation and Readership Expanding Institutional Access via Consortial Sales & Developing World Initiatives As we have seen over the last few years, libraries continue to migrate from individual institutional subscriptions to consortial subscriptions. A consortial subscription is buying group formed when many libraries join together to negotiate deals on packages of journals from publishers. The following chart details how many traditional and consortial institutions now have subscriptions to JOM. As you can see, 1,538 institutions had access to JOM in 2006, but due to recently‐signed consortia agreements, we can now report that approximately 1,801 libraries have access to the journal—an increase of more than 17 percent over last year!

Sale and Lease of JOM’s Backfile Deep backfile, that is, journal content from Volume One, Issue One through the final issue of 1998, is available for lease and purchase for JOM and the majority of SAGE journals to institutions that hold a current subscription to the journal. Content from January 1999 to the present continues to be included in the current subscription. Libraries and consortia can also lease or purchase the journal’s deep backfile as part of the SAGE Deep Backfile Package, which for 2008 includes backfile for 354 SAGE journals. The table below shows how many institutions have access to the SAGE Deep Backfile Package, which includes JOM, and how many institutions have purchased or leased the individual backfile for the journal.

2007 Backfile Sales and Purchase Lease Purchase SAGE Deep Backfile 1 69 JOM Backfile 9 73

Management & Organization Studies: A SAGE Full‐Text Collection JOM is also available to institutions electronically as part of the Management & Organization Studies: A SAGE Full‐Text Collection. The Collection comprises the most popular peer‐reviewed journals in Management and Organization Studies from SAGE and partnering societies. An important resource for scholars, the Collection includes the current issues for 34 journals totaling 44,400 articles, book reviews, and editorials. Throughout the year, Management & Organization Studies: A SAGE Full‐Text Collection has been promoted through direct mail and email campaigns. Through further consortia deals, JOM, as part of the Collection, is receiving additional exposure at universities worldwide.

SAGE Premier One way JOM content is available to consortia is through the SAGE Premier package of journals, which includes nearly the entire SAGE portfolio (currently 484 titles). Sales of SAGE Premier are negotiated on a case‐by‐case basis by our sales team. The advantages of SAGE Premier are that all SAGE content is more widely disseminated and, hence, used; additional ʹnewʹ revenue is gained by participating titles; the consortium is less likely to cancel its primary subscriptions; and the consortium is able to better predict what its future spending will be with SAGE.

Journals already held by a consortium will continue to see their full revenue plus a share of the additional revenue from the SAGE Premier deal, and journals that were not originally held by the consortium will now receive a share of the incremental revenue. The main benefit of SAGE Premier is the increase in exposure and usage that a participating journal will receive and the decrease in likelihood of subscription cancellations.

Consortia receiving the SAGE Premier package of journals are based in the following countries: Brazil, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Iceland, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Lithuania, Macedonia, Norway, Serbia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, The Netherlands, Turkey, the United Kingdom, Australia, China, Korea, New Zealand, South Africa, and the United States. Please note that this list is not comprehensive.

Publish Ahead of Print SAGE OnlineFirst is featured on JOM’s SAGE Journals Online (SJO) homepage. It allows finalized articles (completed articles in queue for assignment to an upcoming issue) to be hosted online prior to their inclusion in a final JOM print and online issue. This feature is commonly referred to as “publish ahead of print,” “publish before print,” and “continuous publishing.”

SAGE OnlineFirst provides several benefits to researchers and users of JOM’s online content. The feature allows subscribers and members to access the very latest papers in the field. Authors also benefit from greatly reduced lead times between submission and publication of articles. Without OnlineFirst, an authorʹs work would only appear online once a finalized JOM issue was sent to print. With OnlineFirst, however, JOM manuscripts can appear online while other articles are being completed for an upcoming issue. An author’s research will therefore reach its audience more quickly, enabling an article to receive greater usage and exposure, including earlier citation opportunities by related work, therefore, potentially increasing JOM’s citations. For more information, please see the FAQ in Appendix C.

SAGETRACK Online System SAGE is pleased to announce that a SAGETRACK Online Peer Review website will be custom built to suit the needs of JOM in summer 2008. SAGETRACK: Powered by ScholarOne® is a powerful and dynamic system through which manuscripts are submitted, peer reviewed, revised, decided upon, and ultimately sent to SAGE. The system streamlines the submission and peer review process through its ability to host and track manuscripts from beginning to end in a user friendly, Web based environment. JOM’s SAGETRACK website will go live and become available for submissions in 2008.

Abstracting & Indexing Abstracting and indexing activity is key to creating researcher awareness and attracting contributions. JOM has good coverage among the primary indexing services. The comprehensive list given below is also available online at http://jom.sagepub.com (click on “Abstracting and Indexing”), where it is updated regularly.

Thomson Scientific JCR® Ranking and Impact Factor

The Journal Citation Reports® (JCR), published by Thomson Scientific (formerly ISI), is a comprehensive and unique resource for journal evaluation, using citation data drawn from over 7,500 scholarly and technical journals worldwide. Coverage is both multidisciplinary and international, incorporating

– 7 –

© SAGE Confidential to the SMA, the JOM Editorial Board, and SAGE journals from over 3,300 publishers in 60 nations. To be included among the journals in the JCR is indeed a great accomplishment, as only the top 10–12 percent of all scholarly journals is included.

A journal’s impact factor is a measure of the frequency with which the “average article” in the journal has been cited in a particular year. The impact factor is calculated by dividing the number of current citations to articles published in the two previous years by the total number of articles published in the two previous years. Impact factors of a number of journals in the same discipline can be compared ranked accordingly.

With an impact factor of 1.954 in 2006, the most recent year available, JOM is ranked 12/64 in the Business category and 13/78 in the Management category.1 This represents a 27.3 percent increase from the 2005 impact factor rating of 1.535.

1Thomson Scientific category definitions:

“This category covers resources concerned with all aspects of business and the business world. These may include marketing and advertising, forecasting, planning, administration, organizational studies, compensation, strategy, retailing, consumer research, and management. Also covered are resources relating to business history and business ethics.

“Management covers resources on management science, organization studies, strategic planning and decision‐ making methods, leadership studies, and total quality management.” – 8 –

© SAGE Confidential to the SMA, the JOM Editorial Board, and SAGE The impact factor is a measure of the “average number of citations” a journal article can expect to receive in the two years following its publication. This figure is used by Thomson Scientific to rank journals within their respective disciplines in the JCR. The impact factor is calculated by taking the total number of citations in a given year to journal articles published in the previous two years, and dividing it by the total number of articles published in the journal in those same two years. The impact factor for 2006, for example, would be calculated as follows:

(2006 Citations to 2004 articles + 2006 Citations to 2005 articles)

Total number of articles published in 2004 and 2005

Please note that the number of citations refers to the times the article has been cited in other journals indexed in the Web of Science® only (i.e. journals which receive an impact factor), and is not comprehensive across all journals in the field.

Here are the raw data used to calculate JOM’s impact factor ratings for the last five years.

Most‐Cited Articles via Thomson Web of Science® In the fall of 2006, SAGE subscribed to the Thomson Web of Science® Database, which tracks citation activity for journals indexed by the Web of Science®. We are now able to provide detailed reports of the most‐cited JOM articles and authors from the Web of Science®, which provides not only a good snapshot of the most relevant articles for citation but an indication of which articles are contributing most significantly to JOM’s impact factor.

We expect that increased exposure on SAGE Journals Online will help to increase JOM’s impact factor and ranking over time by increasing citations. A number of other strategies can be employed, including the following:

• Timeliness. Maintain on‐time publication. Publishing on time implies a healthy backlog of manuscripts, which is essential for ongoing viability. • International diversity. Improve the number of international authors and Editorial Board members to reflect a global approach and coverage—Thomson Scientific looks for journals that will meet the needs of its international subscriber base. • Articles on emerging topics. Publish on emerging topics to help differentiate JOM from its competition—Thomson Scientific looks for content that will enrich their databases. • Review articles. According to Thomson Scientific, “Review articles generally are cited more frequently than typical research articles because they often serve as surrogates for earlier literature, especially in journals that discourage extensive bibliographies.” (Thomson Scientific, “The ISI Impact Factor,” http://scientific.thomson.com/free/essays/journalcitationreports/impactfactor/ ). • Selection of widely‐cited authors. Publish articles written by authors who have contributed to other journals ranked in the JCR—they are likely to cite their previous work to support their current article, which could potentially increase the citation count for your journal.

In Appendix A you will find additional information from Thomson Scientific’s 2006 report, the latest available, including tables ranking all journals by impact factor in the Business and Management

JOM Online

Online Summary Online usage, along with traditional subscriber growth and retention, is an important indicator of a journal’s success. Librarians monitor how often a journal is being accessed and use this information when they make their renewal and cancellation decisions. Journal editors can also use online usage statistics to review citations, up‐and‐coming topics in the field, and declining subject areas.

One of SAGE‘s goals for 2008 is to include new Web 2.0 features on all journal homepages which are geared toward increasing the “discoverability” of our journal content. On the sidebar of every abstract is a link labeled “email this article to a friend” along with links at the bottom of the abstract to CiteULike, Connotea, Del.icio.us, Digg, Reddit, and Technorati, which are social networking sites that allow users to mark articles and share the links with friends and colleagues through the platform of the site itself, rather than via email. This method of distribution has several advantages, namely, an additional presence on the internet that is not as easily‐deleted as an email, and a way to personalize articles and recommendations of material for individual readers. In 2007, SAGE began offering non‐English abstracts on several of our journals in order to appeal to a broader international audience. We have also recorded our first podcast, and plan to record several more. With these enhancements, JOM will be at the forefront of web technology.

Usage Statistics Each year, we are seeing significant increases in online usage across all of our journals. As a part of our efforts to promote online usage, we provide free‐access periods to targeted markets on a regular basis. Our most recent SAGE‐wide free‐access period was offered in February 2007 to all institutions subscribing to at least one SAGE journal, while a registered free‐access period was offered in November 2007 and was our most successful trial to date, due in large part to a comprehensive and wildly successful marketing campaign promoting the trial urging registration, with over 100,000 users signing up. It is important to note these periods when reviewing usage data, as “hits” and downloads increase significantly during those times.

A detailed summary of online usage activity for 2005 – 2007 is provided in the following table.

Institutional Marketing Libraries are our primary customer base, and we continuously brand SAGE and promote our products and services to the librarian market throughout the year. In addition to sales and customer service support, we maintain close ties with the library community through

• Quarterly Librarians’ e‐Newsletters featuring company and product news and special offers. • A “Librarians’ Site” hosted on our corporate homepage providing relevant information to librarians about our journals program. • Special announcements via subscription agents about pricing, policy changes, new journals, and renewals. • Advertisements in library publications, such as Library Journal, and library conference programs. • Press releases aimed at library and scholarly publishing media outlets. • High profile exhibits and receptions at major national and international library conferences, including the American Library Association (ALA), Medical Library Association (MLA), Special Library Association (SLA), Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL), the International Federation of Library Associations (IFLA), the Charleston Conference, Internet Librarian, London Online, and the Frankfurt Book Fair. • Funding through grants and sponsorships for library events, conferences and particular divisions of library associations. • Annual Library Advisory Board meetings where we solicit advice from our handpicked panel of experienced librarians regarding developments in the industry, difficulties facing librarians, and new initiatives and product offerings being proposed by SAGE. • Ongoing interviews conducted by our global library/consortia sales team and frequent visits to individual libraries by marketing and editorial staff.

© SAGE Confidential to the SMA, the JOM Editorial Board, and SAGE Appendix C: Frequently-Asked Questions

How is an OnlineFirst manuscript cited? Each OnlineFirst JOM manuscript is citable, the official publication date being the date of the manuscriptʹs first online posting. In place of page numbers that are assigned along with the final issue, OnlineFirst papers are assigned DOIs (Digital Object Identifiers), from the DOI Foundation (http://www.doi.org/). DOIs provide a permanent way to identify manuscripts published in the online environment, even after they are assigned to a print issue and given an actual volume, issue, and first page number. Each article DOI is registered with CrossRef (http://www.crossref.org/ ), allowing permanent resolution to each article and giving publishers the ability to link their references to JOM articles whenever they are cited.

Once a JOM OnlineFirst article is assigned to its final issue and given its bibliographic data, such as volume, issue, and first page number, the hosting of the article online transitions from the OnlineFirst listing to that of the completed issue. In other words, users will be able to locate the article via JOM’s main archive page or the current issue link rather than the OnlineFirst page. Citations using either the DOI or the bibliographic data will both resolve to the final article. The publish ahead of print version of the article will remain available as a version to the final article. The primary, completed article will be the prominent article found when linking into the DOI or article URL. Please visit http://jom.sagepub.com to view all JOM OnlineFirst article postings.

Readers and authors alike are encouraged to sign up for JOM’s OnlineFirst publish ahead of print alert option, ensuring immediate notification each time a paper is published online first. Journal Email Alerts are also available for ongoing JOM tables of contents and for alerts by author name and keyword. Visit http://jom.sagepub.com/cgi/alerts and sign up today.

What is HINARI, and does SAGE participate? SAGE is proud to sponsor JOM’s inclusion in the Health InterNetwork Access Research Initiative (HINARI). This service, run by the World Health Organization, allows developing countries access to journals across a wide range of subjects. Those countries with a GDP less than $1,000 per capita are eligible for free access, while those with GDP between $1,000 and $3,000 pay nominal fees which are then used for infrastructure development, technological development and other enhancement programs. No fees are paid to SAGE for this endeavor. Though this program began with a focus on biomedical journals, as of 2008, HINARI will provide access to all SAGE journals.

What is SAGE Open? SAGE Publications now offers authors of primary research articles in a number of biomedical journals the option to make them freely available upon publication on SAGE Journals Online. The SAGE Open program will initially operate across a number of biomedical journals in the SAGE portfolio. Under this plan, SAGE will allow the deposition of the final paper (post refereeing, copy‐editing and proof‐reading), to PubMed Central and its international equivalents, such as UKPMC, or PMCI upon publication. All other SAGE policies regarding open access archiving remain unchanged. The SAGE Open option will be made available to authors of primary research articles only upon acceptance of their paper for publication. This is in order to prevent any potential conflicts of interest, and to ensure that authorsʹ choice/funding requirements have no influence on the editorial peer review and decision‐making. Payment of the SAGE Open fee will enable articles to be immediately available on SAGE Journals Online – 39 –

© SAGE Confidential to the SMA, the JOM Editorial Board, and SAGE to non‐subscribers, as well as to subscribers to that journal. It will also permit authors to submit the final manuscript to their funding agencyʹs preferred archive if applicable. Those authors who do not wish to use this service will be under no pressure to do so, and their article will be published free of charge, in the usual manner. All existing policies on author posting of the final version will then apply.

Is SAGE COUNTER compliant? SAGE Journals Online is fully compliant with Release 2, the latest version of the International COUNTER Code of Practice for Journals and Databases. This code of conduct provides librarians and publishers with a consistent and credible way to measure and compare usage from publisher to publisher for online journal content. For more information, see the COUNTER website, located at http://www.projectcounter.org/code_practice.html.

Does SAGE have a discoverability group ? SAGE has a dedicated cross‐departmental Discoverability Team which meets regularly to look into ways to make our website and electronic journal content easier to find online. The Team carries out research and makes recommendations on issues such as keywords, site maps, the usability of SAGE Journals Online, and increasing visibility through linking to other sites. The Team works to ensure that SAGE content is highly ranked by search engines such as Google and Google Scholar, which are the most common routes through which our website and content are found.

What is the ”Best Paper Award“? In 2008, SAGE will begin rolling out an award for the best paper published in JOM in the previous year. The award, selected by the journal’s editor and editorial board will include a commemorative plaque and a check, with the option of placing a banner on the journal’s homepage and provide free‐access for a limited period of time, as determined by JOM. By rewarding authors writing the best papers and showing appreciation of their submissions, we hope to encourage authors to continue to submit quality research to JOM and reinforce JOM’s atmosphere of high standards. Please talk to your publishing editor for more information about this award.

What are Recommended Readings/Coursepacks? This year, SAGE will introduce a “Recommended Readings” or “Coursepacks” link on the SJO homepage of select journals. The recommended readings will include links to 10‐15 papers that showcase some of JOM’s best articles, to be used as either a starting point for readers first encountering the journal or a collection for instructors to use for supplementary reading. The list should include articles that cover a broad range of topics, articles that broach new or cutting‐edge topics, articles that touch upon the history of the discipline, recent articles, articles of international scope, or articles relevant to current authors and researchers.
