It was the custom then for students at William and Mary, the second oldest college in America, to gather in the Apollo Room of the Raleigh Tavern in Williamsburg, Virginia, to discuss the affairs of the day. On the night of December 5, 1776, five close companions stayed after the others had left and founded Phi Beta Kappa. A secret motto, grip, and ritual were subsequently adopted. The Fraternity had to be secret because the William and Mary faculty didn’t approve of its students discussing social issues and possibly straying too far from accepted beliefs. Therefore, the members developed secret signals of challenge and recognition. The concept of a secret grip, motto, ritual, a distinctive badge, code of laws and the use of Greek letters by Phi Beta Kappa were adopted by subsequent fraternities. Fraternity, Morality, and Literature were the principles symbolized by the stars on the silver medal adopted as the insignia of Phi Beta Kappa membership. The society prospered, and three years later expansion began. Chapters were established at Yale, Harvard, Dartmouth and numerous other campuses. As Phi Beta Kappa developed, it evolved into a purely honorary society. For this reason, as other fraternities were founded, they were not considered competitors.

Having occasion to make inquiries in regard to one of these organizations, he was surprised to learn that there was no general repository of facts in regard to them, that few of their members knew more than the names of those with which they had come into contact, and that the majority were ignorant alike, of the origin, principles, history, and customs of any of the fraternities, oftentimes their own included. This lack of knowledge has arisen not from the desire to know nothing of other organizations, nor from indifference to the affairs of their neighbors, but from the fact that information of this kind had never been brought together in a convenient shape. An endeavor has been made to make this book a vehicle of such information. In seeking material the author has in general met with the hearty co-operation of the fraternities themselves, and with few exceptions all facilities have been placed at his disposal. Nothing is here given to the public that an intelligent observer could not ascertain, and no attempt has been made to lay bare any of the so-called secrets of the college societies.

    Report of the Student Organization Review Committee (SORC) August 2019 Description The Student Organization Review Committee (SORC) was created by a subcommittee of the Charter Committee for Building Social Community at Trinity College and was first convened in December 2013. SORC is composed of two students, two faculty members, and one staff member. The committee currently meets twice per semester. The purpose of this report is to describe the work of SORC during the 2018-2019 academic year. This document will describe the annual review process, provide an update on the work of the Committee and conclude with recommendations regarding the work of SORC. Purpose SORC annually reviews selective social organizations to assess progress toward compliance with the standards set by the Charter Committee’s subcommittee. Selective social organizations are defined as all social organizations with a dedicated facility (regardless of ownership), selective membership, and/or initiation process. These include Greek Letter Organizations, theme houses, and cultural houses. SORC is not a disciplinary body. Rather, the committee determines whether an organization has met the standards set by the College. The committee also provides constructive feedback to each organization with suggestions for improvement during the next review period. Reporting Process For the annual review, each organization is provided a form or “report” with the following prompts: What is the event or accomplishment through which your organization contributed most to the campus or broader community? Please connect your organization’s values to the new mission statement of the college. Engage. Connect. Transform. PLEDGE MANUAL of the PSI UPSILON FRATERNITY Name Address Chapter and Class HISTORICAL NOTES Psi Upsilon Fraternity was founded at Union College, Schenectady, New York, on November 24, 1833. On that date seven men, four juniors and three sophomores, met and signed the formal pledge to organize a secret society. The fact that the Fraternity was organized was first kept secret. In 1834, twelve additional members from the Classes of 1836 and 1837 were initiated. Pins were first worn publicly in June, 1834. The local chapter name, Theta, was not assumed until 1838, by which time the Fraternity had embarked upon its policy of con servative expansion. The first constitution of the Fraternity was adopted on January 10, 1834, and this document is now in the archives of the Executive Council. At the present time there are twenty-eight active chapters of Psi Upsilon � twenty-five in the United States and three in Canada. Expan sion in the United States has continued to be governed by a conservative policy. Only five new chapters have been installed in this country since the turn of the century. Since her founding in 1833, Psi Upsilon has numbered among her sons countless men prom inent in literary, academic, financial and pro fessional fields. Two Presidents of the United States have been members of our Fraternity. There have been numerous Senators, Congress men, Cabinet Ministers, Governors of States, etc., who were members of Psi Upsilon.
