Golf News...... Congratulations to Phil Powell, who won the President’s Cup with +5. Eric Skillman finished second at +4, making 43 points. Phil’s birdie on hole seventeen made the difference down the stretch. Bob Daunais finished third and Jay Carrick was fourth.

“Sundowners” is in full gear, Jessica is running the game, she and Kevin or I will take on all players. Ladies, Jessica needs some company. The staff would love to play with as many different members as possible. We lost our first match but won our second, thanks to her carrying me along with a fine score of 36 in a two club wind. The format is blind draw better-ball net of two, skins and closest to the hole. The maximum shots for nine holes is 12 and the maximum score is net double bogey.

We’ve received some comments about ball marks on the greens. I believe the problem is caused more by people not seeing or finding their mark. At times I also find it difficult to find ball marks from wedges I hit into the green, but I make sure I repair at least three old marks. Please fix as many ball marks as possible if your group is waiting on the group in front of you.

The St. Pete Open

2014 marks the 50th anniversary of the final St Petersburg Open. The tournament had been held since 1930. In the summer of 1964 the PGA Tour indicated that it would require a significant increase in the purse, preferably to $50,000, for a 1965 event. The City of St Petersburg had announced earlier in the year that it would no longer aid in the sponsorship of professional athletic events. A search for a sponsor proved unsuccessful and the tournament dates were taken by a sponsoring group in Jacksonville. Of the 29 editions of the tournament, 13 were played at our club, then Lakewood CC. Winners at Lakewood included Sam Snead, Jimmy Demaret, Jackie Burke, Cary Middlecoff and the final three, Bobby Nichols, Raymond Floyd and Bruce Devlin.

Much has been written about those players as well as some of the winners at the tournament’s other two venues, Pasadena and Sunset (now the Vinoy CC). Those champions included Ben Hogan, Lawson Little, Bob Goalby and Arnold Palmer. But this story is about one of the lesser-known St Pete Open champions which leads to a trivia question. Who is the oldest winner on the PGA Champion’s Tour? Several names come to mind quickly – Hale Irwin, Tom Watson, going back a little farther, Gary Player, or, farther yet, Sam Snead. Actually none of those gentlemen holds that record.

The correct answer is Mike Fetchick. He won the Hilton Head Seniors championship on his 63rd birthday in October, 1985. His first win on the PGA Tour was at SPCC, then Lakewood, in March, 1956, posting a 275 total and defeating on the 1st hole of a playoff. A club professional, Fetchick had played the Tour sporadically since 1952 but embarked on a fulltime playing effort in 1956. This proved quite successful as he not only won here but also logged a victory at the prestigious that summer and capped the year off with a third win at the Mayfair Open in the fall.

Despite finishing 8th on the money list that year Fetchick pursued the Tour fulltime only through 1957, returning to club pro duties with only scattered appearances in the Florida spring events and an occasional foray into the US Open or PGA Championship. Fetchick’s multiple wins got him a spot on the Senior Tour when it began in earnest in 1981. He continued to play through the early 1990’s. The Hilton Head victory was his only one in the senior ranks but he did have something of a last hurrah at the Sleepy Hollow, Yonkers, NY senior event, going to the fifth extra hole before losing to in August, 1990, just two months shy of his 68th birthday.

Mike Fetchick made one final connection with our club. In the spring of 1993, he was in the area and contacted Skip Alexander about a possible game at the course where he had won 37 years before. Skip arranged it, they played in the daily 12 o’clock game. Skip, always a shrewd matchmaker, secured Mike the equivalent of a 3 handicap. Although I did not play that day, I remember Skip describing how Mike drove it close to 250, hit virtually all the greens and shot a relatively easy 70, his age at the time… and that their team won. Mike Fetchick passed away in 2012. Trivia question answered, another of our club’s links with golf’s history remembered.
