Murray Billington was the recipient of the Bev Evans Trophy for “Service to Tennis”. Murray has made an outstanding contribution to Seniors Tennis during his thirty years of involvement as a player and administrator both at Club and National level. For the six years he was on the TNZS Management Committee, four of these were as President. Very much a “hands on” President who was involved in the running of the organisation, organising venues, meeting with host clubs holding our National events and making sure the association was running smoothly.

Murray was a regular player at Seniors tournaments and during his time as President, tried to play as many tournaments as he could around the country, from Otago to Northland, helping to promote TNZS. At National level, he has 12 Individual titles, of those 8 doubles titles were in partnership with David Theyers and at the Teams Event his Lower Northland team won 9 titles. Murray also represented NZ twice at the ITF Worlds in Perth (2009) and Croatia (2013). Well done, a very worthy recipient of this award.

Philip Seeman is the recipient of the Trevor Withers Trophy for “Tennis Achievement”. Philip has played at the highest level, representing NZ in both ITF Teams & Individual competitions. Since starting his tennis career as a junior in 1968 at the Wainuiomata Tennis Club and winning the Junior Club Champs in 1973, Philip has not looked back. He played in the Otago men’s team at the age of 16 and continued to represent Canterbury and also teams and in 1995 won the Wellington Open. Philip continues to be a member of the Premier 1 team at the Thorndon Tennis Club and has been Chairman of Tennis Central Region Board since 2007.

Philip has represented Tennis NZ Seniors at the ITF World Teams and Individuals during 2015 at La Baule, France in the Men’s 55+ team. 2017 at Miami, Florida in the Men’s 50+ team and in the Individuals in Miami, was runner up in the mixed doubles 55+.

The Awards Continued

Congratulations to Tennis Seniors Auckland on being awarded the Bev & Murray Billington “Club of the Year” Trophy for 2018. Tennis Seniors Auckland have a young Committee which brings new ideas and have a good way of con- necting with players. For their local club days, they have moved away from Nicholson Park Tennis Courts and back to local tennis clubs, finding it is involving a larger number of players. Over the winter months they have been organising their social play at the indoor courts at Merton Road Tennis Centre which is proving nicer to be out of the wind and rain. TS Auckland have 8 fixtures each year, played between February & August involving 12 men & 12 women each match. They ran a very successful Wimby Challenge using wooden racquets with the players dressing up accordingly. Julie Blow has been their long serving member for almost 20 years. Feleti Sofele has been a member of TNZS Management Committee since 2010 and Grant Waller since 2017. Well done Auckland, we wish you all the best

TENNIS STALWART IS LOST TO SENIORS

Malcolm Cargo Waikato has been saddened by the loss of one of their valued members. Malcolm’s administration expertise has been of immense value to Waikato Tennis, Tennis and Seniors.

ACING THE SECOND SERVE IMPROVE YOUR SECOND SERVICE Create margin with spin and placement Add variety so it is not predictable Think tactically, using your second serve to set up points to your advantage Keep your racquet head speed up Practise, practise, practise PRACTICE IS KEY FOR TURNING A SECOND SERVE INTO A WEAPON. It is a common saying in tennis that you are only as good as your second server. So why do many players focus primarily on improving their first serve? Considering around 30-50 per cent of all points start with a second serve, it is a shot every player needs to be constantly practicing and improving. After a missed first serve, a reliable and effective second serve is vital to avoid double faults and allow the server to start points strongly. The biggest advantage of having confidence in your second serve is that it also creates opportunity to swing more freely on first serves. You can aim for the lines, hit it harder or increase the risk knowing that you have a dependable second serve to follow if needed. WHAT DOES A SECOND SERVE LOOK LIKE A second serve should not be too dissimilar to a first serve - just with more margin added over the net and in the court. Extra kick and topspin can help achieve this greater control. Racquet head speed and aggression are still required to make a second serve effective, which is where we see the biggest differences between good and average second serves. Players often become too tentative on their second serves. A common mistake many make, especially on break points or when under pressure, is slowing down their racquet head and just ‘popping’ the ball into the service box to avoid hitting a doubles fault. This makes it more likely to land in an opponent's hit- ting zone - giving them a chance to take control of the point on return. A server needs to adopt the mindset of wanting to use their second serve to set up the point to their advantage, not just to land it in.
