An Evening with Robert Redford and T Bone Burnett FIRST-EVER SUNDANCE LONDON KICKS OFF AT THE O2 WITH AN EVENING WITH ROBERT REDFORD AND T BONE BURNETT A Peek Inside the Minds of the Artists: Redford and Burnett to Share Classic Musical Moments in Their Careers and the Films that Inspire Them Moderated by Nick Hornby, with Special Musical Act to be Announced Soon Passes, Packages and Tickets on Sale Beginning 28 November London, Wednesday 23 November 2011, The O2 — Sundance founder Robert Redford and 12-time Grammy Award winner T Bone Burnett will open the first-ever Sundance London music and film festival on 26 April. Redford and Burnett in their first joint public appearance will explore the relationship between film and music. This event kicks off the new four-day, multi-disciplinary arts festival at The O2 which is a partnership between Robert Redford, Sundance Institute and AEG Europe. An Evening with Robert Redford and T Bone Burnett will be moderated by author and screenwriter Nick Hornby and will feature a special musical act to be announced soon. Sundance London takes place 26 – 29 April, 2012, and will feature the UK premieres of films fresh from the 2012 Sundance Film Festival which takes place 19-29 January, 2012 in Park City, Utah, U.S.A. Daily live music performances, discussions, panels and other public events will round out the four-day festival. Passes, ticket packages and individual tickets for both the film and music components of Sundance London will go on sale to the public on Monday 28 November at www.sundance- london.com. Robert Redford, Founder and President of Sundance Institute, said: "The depth of T Bone’s experience and accomplishments in the worlds of both film and music set the stage for the Sundance London program and the celebration of music and film that’s to come. His ability to enliven film in such an authentic fashion has seen him produce and curate some of cinema’s most notable and commercially successful soundtracks.” In the opening night event, filmmaker, actor and Sundance founder Robert Redford and musician, songwriter, and soundtrack and record producer T Bone Burnett, will share their recollections of achieving great musical moments with the many filmmakers, actors and musicians they’ve collaborated with throughout their storied careers. Joined on stage by Nick Hornby (High Fidelity), who will moderate the evening, the two artists of ‘sound and screen’ will utilise film clips from some of the many films they’ve worked on for which music made an indelible contribution. Redford and Burnett will also discuss some of their favourite musical moments from other great films that have influenced their work. The evening will be capped off by a special musical act. Burnett's 40 years of experience in music and entertainment include work as an artist, songwriter, producer, performer, concert producer, record company owner and artist advocate. His work as a music producer has resulted in Raising Sand, from Robert Plant and Alison Krauss, The Union from Elton John and Leon Russell and best-selling albums from Counting Crows, The Wallflowers, Los Lobos, Cassandra Wilson, Roy Orbison and Ralph Stanley. His experience in film includes The Big Lebowski, O Brother Where Art Thou?, Walk The Line, The Divine Secrets Of The Ya-Ya Sisterhood, Cold Mountain and Crazy Heart, for which T Bone and co-writer Ryan Bingham earned an Academy Award, a Golden Globe Award and a Grammy Award.     Woody Guthrie Annual, 4 (2018): Fernandez, “Ruination Day” “Ruination Day”: Gillian Welch, Woody Guthrie, and Disaster Balladry1 Mark F. Fernandez Disasters make great art. In Gillian Welch’s brilliant song cycle, “April the 14th (Part 1)” and “Ruination Day,” the Americana songwriter weaves together three historical disasters with the “tragedy” of a poorly attended punk rock concert. The assassination of Abraham Lincoln in 1865, the sinking of the Titanic in 1912, and the epic dust storm that took place on what Americans call “Black Sunday” in 1935 all serve as a backdrop to Welch’s ballad, which also revolves around the real scene of a failed punk show that she and musical partner David Rawlings had encountered on one of their earlier tours. The historical disasters in question all coincidentally occurred on the fourteenth day of April. Perhaps even more important, the history of Welch’s “Ruination Day” reveals the important relationship between history and art as well as the enduring relevance of Woody Guthrie’s influence on American songwriting.2 Welch’s ouevre, like Guthrie’s, often nods to history. From the very instruments that she and Rawlings play to the themes in her original songs to the tunes she covers, she displays a keen awareness and reverence for the past. The sonic quality of her recordings, along with her singing and musical style, also echo the past. This historical quality is quite deliberate. Welch and Rawlings play vintage instruments to achieve much of that sound. Welch’s axes are all antiques—her main guitar is a 1956 Gibson J-50.

    Colin Linden – bLOW Biography “Got a coin in my pocket heavy and gold/It don’t own me I need to let it go/Cause having is wanting/Desire can make you weep” – “bLOW” Colin Linden’s tale is the stuff of legend, the kind told in the Coen brothers’ O Brother Where Art Thou or Inside Llewyn Davis, both of which featured his guitar playing on the soundtracks. That film would begin with an 11-year-old meeting his musical idol Howlin’ Wolf at a matinee show in his native Toronto, accompanied by his mom, who took a picture of the two during a nearly two-hour long conversation before the gig, the legendary bluesman idling over coffee and cigarettes. “I’m an old man now, and I won’t be around much longer,” Wolf told him. “It’s up to you to carry it on.” Linden still carries that frayed photograph in his wallet, along with a Sears 5/8” socket wrench in his pocket to play slide guitar. He has taken Wolf’s plea seriously, performing since he was 12 years old, leaving home as a teenager to travel the south at the invitation of Mississippi Sheiks delta blues guitarist Sam Chatmon which took him to Detroit, Chicago, Indianapolis, St. Louis, Memphis and Hollandale, Mississippi, meeting and visiting the sites of his heroes – Brownie McGhee, Muddy Waters, Sippie Wallace, Tampa Red, Blind John Davis, the Rev. Robert Wilkins, Sleepy John Estes and Son House, visiting the landmarks and juke joints, many of which he’s played in during the course of a 45-year career producing and playing blues and roots music.
