  • ACTON SCOTT St Margaret Diocese of Hereford SO45368943
ACTON SCOTT St Margaret Diocese of Hereford SO45368943 There are no fewer than 6 ancient or veteran yews among the 13 that grow here. They form a cluster (numbers 5 to 10) at the west end of the churchyard. The majority of these older trees appeared to be male. Photos and girths are from 2012. Tree 5 is multi-stemmed from a short bole. It is only when viewed from the farmyard below that its size can be appreciated, with a root system that reaches the ground at the base of an 8' high wall. It was not possible to measure this tree. Tree 6 grows on the left side of the gate leading from the church- yard to the farmyard. Inclusion of the almost separated branch growing at the edge of the bole would create a girth of 26/28'. Excluding it gives a girth closer to 22'. The photo on the left shows the tree’s vast root system seen from the farmyard below. Tree 7 (left) grows on the right side of the gate. It is a solid tree, with a girth of approximately 17'. Tree 8 is the only yew that does not mark the churchyard perimeter. It is an ancient hollow tree with fine internal stems. Girth was 20' 4'' at 1', but it has been larger. It is the only tree singled out in The King’s England c1938 where Mee wrote that ‘among the fine yews in the churchyard is a grand veteran 21' round out-topping the massive 13th century tower’. It is seen here in 1998 (left) and 2012 (right).

  • Hughley, Easthope and Shipton
Hughley, Easthope and Shipton Our visit was inspired by A.E. Housman's poem 'A Shropshire Lad' was spent exploring the churches of Wenlock Team Ministry. Actually, as far as I'm aware, only one church, Hughley, is mentioned by Housman, but it served as a good starting point for discovering the churches in the surrounding area. Within the Team MInistry there are two discrete geographical groupings, one cluster lying north on the road from Wenlock to Shrewsbury, and the other on the road leading south west from Wenlock in the direction of Craven Arms and Church Stretton. St John the Baptist, Hughley The vane on Hughley 'steeple' - in fact it's a half timbered bell tower. Our first church, Hughley, lies north of the Stretton Road (B4371). Its main claim to fame is the mention in A.E. Housman's poem 'A Shropshire Lad' (see below). It's likely that Housman merely picked the name off a map, because it's said that when he wrote the poem he had never actually visited Shropshire, being in fact born in Worcestershire. Indeed, there is no steeple there, and never has been at Hughley, although there is a half- timbered bell tower, albeit with a vane: The Vane on Hughley steeple, Veers bright, a far-known sign, And there lie Hughley people, And there lie friends of mine... Rood screen at Hughley A colourful post-Easter altar cloth at Hughley. Mary and Rabboni stained glass at Hughley Inside, the church is distinguished by an attractive carved rood screen dividing chancel and nave.

Shropshire Council is working to make Shropshire a great place to live, learn, work, and visit – we want to innovate to thrive. To make that ambition a reality, we need to understand what our towns and communities need in order to make them better places for all. Our Place Plans – of which there are 18 across the county – paint a picture of each local area, and help all of us to shape and improve our communities. Place Plans are documents which bring together information about a defined area. The information that they contain is focussed on infrastructure needs, such as roads, transport facilities, flood defences, schools and educational facilities, medical facilities, sporting and recreational facilities, and open spaces. They also include other information which can help us to understand local needs and to make decisions.
