Since 1945, we have trained the very best performers, directors, theatre production artists and producers. We are committed to ensuring our community of over 500 students is representative and that drama training is accessible to all. Opened in 2018, our home in Peckham was conceived in partnership with Southwark Council as a truly 21st-century drama school and a creative arts hub for all. Our state-of-the-art facilities include the 200-seat Mountview Theatre (made possible by a £1m donation from Sir Cameron Mackintosh), the 80-seat Backstage Theatre, 21 acting/dance studios, TV and radio suites and production workshops. In recognition of their extraordinary work in establishing Mountview’s new home and for their commitment to promoting inclusivity, Joint Chief Executives Stephen Jameson and Sarah Preece were presented with Olivier Awards in 2020. Shortlisted for the RIBA London Regional Awards and Stage Awards Theatre Building of the Year, our new home is not only a vital resource for our students, but also an emerging centre of excellence for accessibility in the arts. Our fully accessible building is home to leading disability arts practitioners Candoco Dance Company amongst a number of other resident professional companies. Today’s students will join a constellation of graduates making their mark on the profession. Actor Noah Thomas (Everybody’s Talking About Jamie), Actor/Writer Amy Trigg (winner, inaugural Women’s Prize for Playwriting 2020), Olivier Award-winning Actor/Writer Giles Terera MBE (Hamilton) and Michael Longhurst, Artistic Director of the Donmar Warehouse are just a few of our notable alumni. The Backstage Theatre was made possible by the generosity of Lady Susie Sainsbury and the Backstage Trust. It is named in honour of their extraordinary founding gift in support of Mountview’s new home. Susie understood and committed to the vision of a new Mountview in Peckham from the outset, and we will always be deeply grateful to her for championing the project and supporting the next generation of performers and theatre makers at Mountview. We meet her as a young woman moving from 1950s Chicago to Nigeria on the eve of its independence from British colonial rule, and as an academic in contemporary America, exploring the nature of identity, community and what it means to become a leader. Awards are made to five community theatres for projects that will make important capital improvements, including one of the rarest surviving music halls, Hoxton Hall, and the community-owned and volunteer-run Beccles Public Hall & Theatre. Grants have been awarded to: Alnwick Playhouse: This cultural hub in Northumberland receives £5,000 towards the ‘Alnwick Playhouse & Community Arts Centre Roof Repairs’ project to enable it to carry out urgent remedial repairs and protect the fabric of the building. Beccles Public Hall & Theatre: It receives £5,000 towards an ‘Improving Access to the Stage’ project, removing part of a side wall to give better access to the stage, and remedial works to remodel the roof as part of a larger programme of renovation and improvement works. Hoxton Hall, London: This rare Grade II* listed music hall in Hackney, East London, receives £5,000 towards its ‘Conservation, Restoration and Modernisation’ project to carry out structural and strengthening works to its upper balcony which will enable it to create four new and accessible performance formats. Tara Arts: London’s first Asian-led theatre, based in Wandsworth, receives £5,000 towards the installation of a set of internal double-leaf, fire-proof acoustic doors for its new auditorium as part of the ‘Tara Theatre Renovation Project’. Natasha Gordon will take the role of Lorraine in her debut play, for which she has recently been nominated for the Best Writer Award in The Stage newspaper’s ‘Debut Awards’. Directed by Roy Alexander Weise (The Mountaintop), Nine Night is a touching and exuberantly funny exploration of the rituals of family. Gloria is gravely sick. When her time comes, the celebration begins; the traditional Jamaican Nine Night Wake. But for Gloria’s children and grandchildren, marking her death with a party that lasts over a week is a test. Nine rum-fuelled nights of music, food, storytelling and laughter – and an endless parade of mourners. The production is designed by Rajha Shakiry, with lighting design by Paule Constable, sound design by George Dennis, movement direction by Shelley Maxwell, company voice work and dialect coaching by Hazel Holder, and the Resident Director is Jade Lewis.

    Monday 7 January 2019 FULL CASTING ANNOUNCED FOR THE WEST END TRANSFER OF HOME, I’M DARLING As rehearsals begin, casting is announced for the West End transfer of the National Theatre and Theatr Clwyd’s critically acclaimed co-production of Home, I’m Darling, a new play by Laura Wade, directed by Theatre Clwyd Artistic Director Tamara Harvey, featuring Katherine Parkinson, which begins performances at the Duke of York’s Theatre on 26 January. Katherine Parkinson (The IT Crowd, Humans) reprises her acclaimed role as Judy, in Laura Wade’s fizzing comedy about one woman’s quest to be the perfect 1950’s housewife. She is joined by Sara Gregory as Alex and Richard Harrington as Johnny (for the West End run, with tour casting for the role of Johnny to be announced), reprising the roles they played at Theatr Clwyd and the National Theatre in 2018. Charlie Allen, Susan Brown (Sylvia), Ellie Burrow, Siubhan Harrison (Fran), Jane MacFarlane and Hywel Morgan (Marcus) complete the cast. Home, I’m Darling will play at the Duke of York’s Theatre until 13 April 2019, with a press night on Tuesday 5 February. The production will then tour to the Theatre Royal Bath, and The Lowry, Salford, before returning to Theatr Clwyd following a sold out run in July 2018. Home, I’m Darling is co-produced in the West End and on tour with Fiery Angel. How happily married are the happily married? Every couple needs a little fantasy to keep their marriage sparkling. They meet in the centre of the town square, where a statue bearing the likeness of a young girl stands, poised and still, one hand raised as if to toast the sky.
