HIGHETT Against Clayton, Highett Seniors kicked what could have been a winning score in another game & an 80 point defi cit almost felt good. Even though we missed the lollies, we got a taste, & it excited supporters & gave the team hope in a previously soul-less season. At one stage the difference was only around 27 points, much better than 100 plus. The understanding of each other gives players more confi dence each week. While behind at each change, there was belief - until around the last 15 minutes, when Clayton kicked a fast seven goals. Highett’s energy was sapped, so there was little response. It seems almost every Senior player has popped up in the goal kickers &/or best, which can’t be a bad thing. When all contribute on the same day, we will surely CELEBRATE a win. The Reserves again battled bravely, but fell short by a long way on the score board – not a true indication of the contest. Highett were right in it until the third quarter, but conceded the last six goals. Everyone is working hard on Saturdays, but need to bring that intensity to Tuesday & Thursday nights. Great to see some individuals raising their games lately & if all do that, a win is not far away.

WELL my expert status is Once again inaccuracy in the 3rd Skye v Murrumbeena restored (for one week at least) quarter cost the Bombers dearly, Skye won’t be happy just losing Five winners again! and this is another match to look last week and will be anxious First game saw Bentleigh taking forward to in the return bout later to take out their frustrations on South Yarra which should have in the year! against Murrumbeena. I can’t been a shellacking, but South Springvale Districts hosted see Murrumbeena’s back line Yarra fi nally turned up to play. Springvale Districts their 3rd quarter effort of 5 goals for me. at goal, even if they only score 4 to Moorabbin’s 1 goal that was goals 8! Still the win was enough the difference. Like the other Caulfi eld v Moorabbin to keep Bentleigh top of the matches this round, no team These 2 sides will be disappointed ladder for another week. really put 4 quarters together with last week’s losses. I’ll go for the second half but fell short just ladder leaders this week, and if the Bears here. conditions are good weather wise short of 3 goals in the end, and Hampton v Oakleigh District the return game later in the year this game should be a ripper! Oakleigh haven’t done too much should be a humdinger! Bentleigh won’t be afraid of the large ground and I think they wrong so far this season whilst Speaking of humdingers, the should win again this week, but it Hampton’s form has been a match of the day between certainly won’t be easy. Mordi are bit “iffy”. The small ground at Oakleigh District and Skye turned more than capable of matching Peterson St wont suit the DIstrict, out to be just that! Oakleigh got it with Bentleigh but I think Oakleigh slipped up a couple of away to a 3 goal lead at quarter their only chance is if Bentleigh weeks ago on a small ground, time and Skye kept pegging away kicks as inaccurately as it did but they have enough class and pegging away and fi nished last week. SFL Media Page CONGRATULATIONS DINGLEY’S STEVE VINEN – 200 GAMES

CONGRATULATIONS to Steve Vinen who becomes the sixth Dingo to reach the remarkable achievement of 200 senior games when he runs through the banner in today’s home game against St Pauls. The boy from Minyip in Victoria’s Wimmera came to the Dingoes in 1999 after a brief stint at Hampton Park, meaning his career at Souter Oval has now spanned 3 decades. Known for his pace, strong hands and penetrating left foot kick, Steve has had occasional forays into the forward line, but his reputation has been built as a resolute and reliable member of the last line of defence, resulting in his being named full back in Dingley’s most recent Team of the Decade. At the end of 2005, disillusioned with Dingley’s non-competiveness in Casey- Cardinia, Steve left in search of team success and tasted that immediately in Rye’s 2006 MPNFL premiership, but in 2008, the year after Dingley joined the SFL, was lured back to the Dingoes, then under the tutelage of Adam Quinn, and promptly celebrated his return by adding that year’s SFL second divvy fl ag to his CV. At 33, and with the dual responsibilities of running his own business and raising two children under three, Steve would be expected to face conjecture as to whether this may be his last year. But given the optimism surrounding the current youthful list at Dingley, Steve hinted that he may just hang around for a while yet. We wish him and his teammates a great game in today’s top of the ladder blockbuster.

100 GAMES FOR CHELSEA HEIGHTS ASH ROBERTS

CHELSEA Heights Senior Playing Coach Ash Roberts ran out for the 100th time last week against East Malvern. The former Frankston Dolphin captain was recruited to the Heights in 2008 as Assistant Coach to Ryan Flack after a decorated career at VFL level which included club B&F and VFL Team of the Year honours. With the Heights having struggled to seventh on the ladder in that year, Roberts formed an integral part of the resurrection of the Demons to consecutive Grand Final appearances in 2009 and 2010, and in his fi rst season as Senior co-coach with Ben Lockwood, the Heights again challenged for the fl ag, falling agonisingly short by 5 points against East Brighton. Roberts having taken his game to another level during the fi nals series in an effort to drag his team to victory. A humble, tough and courageous footballer, Roberts’ accolades at Beazley Reserve are many. He won the club Best & Fairest in 2010 and 2012, was runner up in 2008 and 2009, was named Captain of the SFL Interleague team in 2009 and was last year named in the SFL Team of 20 Years. Enormously respected by both team-mates and opposition alike, Roberts ranks comfortably among the best local footballers to have graced the fi eld over the past 10-15 years, and the Chelsea Heights Football Club owes plenty to the contribution he has made. Congratulations Ash on 100 outstanding games.
