    Quilts 1700 – 2010 Supported by the Friends of the V&A With further support from Coats Crafts and the Coats Foundation Trust 20 March – 4 July 2010 The V&A will present its first major exhibition of quilts next spring. Exploring 300 years of British quilt making, the exhibition will show more than 65 quilts from a cot cover made in the 1690s to recent examples by leading contemporary artists including Tracey Emin and Grayson Perry as well as special commissions by Sue Stockwell, Caren Garfen and Jo Budd. The first exhibition of its kind in the UK, Quilts 1700-2010 will show an extraordinary variety of quilts from the highly decorative and opulent such as the Bishop’s Court Quilt, once believed to have been created by a Duke for a visit from King Charles II in 1670, to modest homemade bed covers, all testifying to the creativity and imagination of the makers. Where appropriate the quilts will be displayed on bed mounts, including a unique set of 1730 patchwork bed hangings, enabling visitors to experience how they were originally designed to be seen. Each quilt has a unique story to tell and the curators have unravelled some of the complex narratives and personal stories handed down with each intricately pieced quilt. The 1829 Elisabeth Chapman coverlet, commemorating Wellington’s Victory at Vittoria, was believed to be a marriage token. However, the curators have discovered that the love poem on the coverlet is actually an epitaph connected to a macabre Georgian tale. The exhibition will end with Tracey Emin’s To Meet My Past (2002), a confessional installation which follows the tradition of quilts used as vessels for personal and collective memories.

    ANNUAL REPORT 2009 - 2010 Message from the Director One of the joys of working at the International Quilt Study Center & Museum is serving a variety of communities. Not only are we a museum for citizens of the state and region, but for citizens of the world. We have welcomed visitors from nearly 50 countries since opening in 2008. As an academic center and university Aaron/Esto museum, the Center makes special contributions to the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. In return, we are energized by our academic affiliations and student constituents. The Center’s current exhibition South Asian Seams: Quilts of India, Pakistan and Bangladesh, for example, allows audiences of all ages and backgrounds to get a first-hand look at the commonalities of quiltmaking traditions globally, explore the diversity of people around the world, and learn more about the ways cultures are connected. The exhibition was informed and enriched by a research trip to India that IQSC curators and I made last fall. We acquired a number of special pieces for the exhibition including trappings for camels and bullocks, as well as several quilted tunics from Rajasthan. Through its exploration of the significance of the world’s quilts and quiltmaking traditions, the International Quilt Study Center & Museum strives to foster greater cultural understanding among students and all citizens. The Center benefited from the talents of the graduate students in the Care and Conservation of Textile Collections class this past spring semester. The students assisted in developing the exhibition called Quilts Under the Microscope, which highlighted the agents of deterioration - light, heat, humidity, and pests - that damage quilts and heirloom textiles and addressed ways to safeguard them for the future.
