LCS Meeting Thursday 13th December The LCS Committee wishes all our members a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year We would also like to thank the Grace Road catering staff for the way the pavilion is set out for every meeting and making sure the room is always WARM! We hope you all enjoy your Christmas party Our December speaker Alan Butcher Chairman Howard Pollard giving members the stats, of Alan Butcher’s career Like so many before, Alan said Didn’t know I played that well On a very very cold December night, around 150 hardy members and guests came along to hear one of the CLAN Butcher, talking about his time playing the game. His two brothers, his two sons and one daughter all played cricket, so he does know a bit about the game. As well has coaching at Essex and the Oval, Alan Raymond Butcher has been head coach for the Zimbabwe National squad. I did ask Alan after the meeting had finished, if he had ever met Mugabe, he said NO. Alan talking about his time facing fast bowling. Just in front is Alan’s book “The Good Murungu” about his time in Zimbabwe The front row lads turned up as normal for this last meeting of 2018. The room is decorated for Christmas but NO TREE! NO it’s not your eyes Just had to share this photo, caught Alan moving so quickly only his ears stayed in focus. TOLD you my new camera was damn clever! Just some of the background of Alan’s career, he spent 15 years at the Oval from 1972. In 1979 he played his only test match for England, coincidentally this match was played at the Oval, against India. In 1986 Alan moved from Surrey to Glamorgan, he said this move revived his passion for the game, so much so that in 1989, he became captain of the club. Everybody interested in Alan’s talk, the empty chair is mine. Peter and Bob, on the front row, Phil and Janet, just managing to hide behind Peter’s head. I thank you for all your efforts in making the monthly raffle go so well. Without your help selling tickets would be difficult. I was given some rather nice bits to use in this raffle, pretty good if I do say so myself! This month we took £125 of your money, making a running total of £535. Thank you all for your generous support, PLEASE do keep it up. Must be checking his lottery numbers, Terry looking on Alan talked about how proud his was that his son Mark played so many test matches for England. Alan said that he did play, once, in a match against his son Mark, this was in a Sunday league game, in 1991, at the Oval, when Alan turned out for Glamorgan and Mark for Surrey. He never said how they got on during the game. Alan told us that he retired from playing cricket in 1992, then in 2013 when his time was up with Zimbabwe, he gave up coaching. Alan said that he still enjoys commentating about the game on Radio five live. At the start of the evening Howard told our members, some details of the play about Chris Lewis. If you were lucky enough to be at that Lewis meeting you may remember Chris talking about it. The play is to be performed in the pavilion at Grace Road on Saturday 20th April 2019, the start time is 18:30, and tickets are £12 for adults and £10 for concessions. There will only be one performance and tickets are limited to just 200. The tickets will be on sale at the society, January, February and March meetings, the society have 100 of the total amount for pre-sale to our members before they are on general sale. This photo is from Alan’s time as Zimbabwe coach. A fitting end to the evening came when Peter Booth gave the formal vote of thanks on behalf of our members. Alan and Peter had played against each other during their careers The next LCS meeting is on Thursday 17th January 2019, when former Glamorgan bowler, Malcolm Nash will be our guest. You will all remember Sobers Six Sixes, well our guest was at the other end during that fateful over. You’ll all be able to hear what he was thinking during the carnage. One last merry Christmas if you got this far. Thanks for reading these musings, I trust you all have a good time and I hope you all enjoy a healthy 2019. Hope you join me again in the New Year. Phil Veasey On behalf of the LCS committee .
