Nato l´1 ottobre 1985, MacGregor Sharp ha iniziato a muovere i primi passi nell´hockey nella lega canadese AMBHL, dove, con i Red Deer Rebels Black Bantam ha giocato 14 incontri durante la stagione 2000/2001. L´annata successiva vede invece il giocatore vestire la maglia dei Red Deer Chiefs Bantam in AMHL: 36 partite per 34 punti complessivi. I tre campionati successivi, invece, Sharp li gioca nell´AJHL tra le fila dei Camrose Kodiaks, per un totale di 161 apparizioni condite da 62 gol e 81 assist, vincendo, assieme ai suoi compagni, il torneo 2002/2003 e 2004/2005. Nel 2005 arriva l´approdo in NCAA (WCHA) grazie a University of Minesota-Duluth.
