Notes From Newby End Farm Church News & Events

A friend of yours introduces you to a friend of theirs. How does the conversation go? You might talk about where they live, or what they do (or what they have retired from!); for pre-school children and parents. you might exchange notes about children and families; you would certainly talk about JAM Service: Jesus and Me your various interests and activities. In other words, you would get to know them. You might find that you have nothing at all in common, and wonder why your friend Morland Church , Monday May 20th, 9.30am. bothered to introduce them in the first place. More likely you will find that you have a lot to talk about and that you will want to get to know this new friend even better. It is Bolton Church, Wednesday May 22nd, 9.30am. highly unlikely that you will choose just to leave it there: if this friendship is to mean anything at all, you'll want to go forward. Most of us probably went to Sunday School (at least, my generation did). Most of us have heard the stories of Jesus in childhood, from school, Sunday School, SNACK parents, friends. We enjoyed hearing those stories. We understood them as befitted the age we were when we heard them. We thought that Jesus seemed to be an SNACK plan a get-together over the May half term. For more information, attractive figure, just like the new friends we think we'd like to get to know better. But contact Carolyn Fyfe 01931 714620 or Nina Walkingshaw 01931 715630. somehow, too many of us have left it there. Somehow, other things have proved pressing and we've not got to know Jesus better. That new friendship, which could have meant so much to us, has been allowed to stay where it is, or, worse, to fade ATOM away completely. What a pity! What's more, I'm not talking here about people who never come to church. For Sunday, May 19th, 10.30 for 11.00 at Morland and Newby Village Hall. too many, 'church' is a sort of club that meets on Sunday (as long as we've nothing better to do). For too many, it is a chance to have a natter over coffee after the service ('Can I remember anything that was said or done?'). And yet and yet we keep being reminded that our entire social and legal fabric has been based on what this man Prayer Meetings... taught 2000 years ago in the Middle East. We've become complacent, as people do. The whole history of the church is one of revival followed by complacency. There can ...are held every Friday at 9.30 am at 7, Mothercroft, Morland. be no doubt that we are in a period of complacency. I suspect that most of you who Prayer requests received and all welcome. read this letter would tick the box in a Census saying 'Christian', and probably 'C of E'. (And I do respect those who would consciously not do so.) Avril Rutherford 01931 714431. Our bishops are encouraging us to take up 'discipleship'. What does that mean? It's a word from our Sunday School days and we probably didn't really know what it meant, other than referring to a dozen men who went around with Jesus, listening to Morland Home Group His stories. A disciple is one who learns, one who wants to learn, one who cares, and will be meeting on Tuesdays at 7.30p.m. during the month of May..... if they work at it, comes to know and love the object of their discipleship. What are we to do? We are all different. For some, a small daily Bible reading is on May the 7th at 7, Mother Croft helpful, along with some sort of commentary. For others (including me) there is no regular daily routine into which such a thing would fit, and it is much easier to find a and on the 21st of May at 1, Crown Inn Fields. chunk of time, perhaps weekly, for this. If we do that, however, we must remember that the Christian life is a continuum. We should be trying live like Jesus all the time. For some, reading is less attractive, and they prefer to talk and discuss and ask questions. Well go on, do it! Ask me. Ask Stewart. Ask anybody. By whatever means, get to know this Man who is offering you His friendship. Please support our advertisers: 'What a friend we have in Jesus...... ' they cover a large part of the cost of printing this magazine . God bless you all. David. Lay Reader i ii
