Some of the answers to these intriguing questions I found in the comparative life stories of the Nobel Prize winners in Medicine, Emil von Behring and Paul Ehrlich. These celestial twins were, like Halem and Stauffenberg, born in Pisces. Though from birth separated by geography, religion and genes, they both found their life mission in Berlin, where both worked at the Institute of Hygiene. -

Of Rabbits and Men: The Tale of Paul Ehrlich In our modern world of chemotherapy, antibiotics and antivirals, it might come as a surprise to find that the origin of all these treatments can be traced back to rabbits; the cute and fluffy kind. To understand why, we need to go all the way back to 1882 Berlin. A talented, if aimless, young German doctor, Paul Ehrlich, had just met the great microbiologist Robert Koch. Koch was giving a lecture in which he identified the pathogen responsible for tuberculosis. Ehrlich was instantly fascinated by Koch and microbiology. Unknown to himself, he had just taken the first step on a path that would help change the way disease is tackled forever1. The late 1800’s were a time of dynamic change in the sciences. Charles Darwin had proposed his Theory of Natural Selection and Thomas Edison had given us the light bulb. Amongst the many fashionable topics of the time, some biologists were fascinated by dyes; specifically the staining of living tissue. Spending all day bent over a microscope looking at the pretty colours might not seem like worthwhile science by modern standards, but these dyes had interesting properties. Dyes displayed a high level of specificity; they would only stain certain structures and pass through others. Ehrlich noticed this and soon started to think of applications for these properties. These were times when catching a chill could kill. Many well-known individuals of the time were killed in their prime due to infectious disease. Emily Brontë died from tuberculosis2, René Descartes from pneumonia3 and Pyotr Tchaikovsky died from cholera4. -

LASKER~KOSHLAND SPECIAL ACHIEVEMENT IN MEDICAL SCIENCE AWARD COMMENTARY I never met a microbe I didn’t like Stanley Falkow At the age of 11, I read Paul de Kruif’s Microbe Hunters, which dramatized the discovery of bacteria and viruses and their roles in human disease. The heroes of Microbe Hunters—Louis Pasteur, Robert Koch and others—became my heroes, and I dreamed of becoming a bacte- riologist, doing research on the bacteria that cause disease. I was lucky enough to fulfill my boyhood dream; however, I could never have imagined the path I eventually followed, or how much my views of microbes and disease would change (and continue to do so) in the process. Of course, I did not make this journey alone. Chapter 1 is a collaborative effort and meant to provide supplementary scanning electron micrographs for a forthcoming description of a genus of tardigrade. Three micrographs illustrate the structures that will be used to distinguish this genus from its confamilials. An In toto lateral view presents the external structures relative to one another. A second micrograph shows a dentate collar at the distal end of each of the fourth pair of legs, a posterior sensory organ (cirrus E), basal spurs at the base of two of four claws on each leg, and a ventral plate. The third micrograph illustrates an appendage on the second leg (p2) of the animal and a lateral appendage (C′) at the posterior sinistral margin of the first paired plate (II). This image also reveals patterning on the plate margin and the leg. -
