NATIONAL DEAby ConnieF BOWL Marchione ING NEWS 58 MEN & 30 WOMEN VIE FOR $6,500 IN DEAF SENIORS TOURNEY IN LAS VEGAS LAS VEGAS—The 16th annual Deaf Senior Bowlers of America program books including bowlers’ names, lane schedules and list of unofficial prizes for each of 4 events were mailed to each entrants by DSBA secretary-treasurer Carol Moers from her home office. The book listed 58 men aged 55 and over and 30 women aged 50 and over, competing for a grand total of nearly $6,500 in prizes for men and women’s singles, mixed doubles, men and women’s match play classics and all events. This 16th annual tournament will be at The Orleans Hotel Bowling Center on October 9-11. The schedule starts with two squads of singles and doubles on Tuesday Oct. 9 with first squad at 8 AM and 2nd squad at 11 AM. In the evening there will be a general meeting at 7 PM. On Wednesday Oct. 10 will be the Match Play Classic’s 4 games qualifying round at 9 AM. On Thursday Oct.11 in the morning the top men and women qualifiers will compete in the match plays with the finals at 3 PM and the man and woman champions crowned. Secretary-Treasurer Moers who has been in this office since beginning in 1997 reported that DSBA is already booked at the Orleans Hotel Bowling Center for the 2013 and 2014 years. IS DSBA THE ONLY DEAF SENIOR BOWLING ORGANIZATION IN THE WORLD? Since 2007 National Deaf Seniors Championship (sometimes called World Deaf Seniors Cham- pionship) had gone in hiatus, this writer knew that other deaf bowling organizations have senior “Masters” as side events. The question is, Do Europe or Asia deaf senior bowlers have their deaf senior bowling tournaments? After having a group of 6 deaf and hearing-impaired bowlers participating in the CUSBC Senior Singles Tournament in which the winners of each age divisions are eligible to participate in the 2013 USBC National Seniors Championships. As both are hearing tournaments and Will there be a World Seniors Bowling Tournament? By stroke of luck last month this writer found the answer in BOWL.com that European senior bowlers has a monthly tour held in different countries for a decade. For instance, click on 2012 Belgian Senior Open; it was the 8th stop on the 2012 International Seniors Bowling Tour. This tour is interesting. Belgian Senior Open drew 78 men and 29 women for its separate events. The format was a single 8 games qualifying block with re-entries allowed. With only 5 qualify- ing squads available, the majority was fully booked with waiting lists. The objective is to make top 32 for men and top 18 for women for nest day’s 8 games and finals. This is scratch, no handicap but there is bonus for those over 50 years old, like 51 getting 1 bonus pin per game, 65 getting 15 bonus pins per game. A couple from England, husband (82) and wife (78) were the oldest in this event with 256 and 224 bonus pins for 8 games. The scorings were high in this event. While the above named International Seniors Bowling Tour is seemly confined to the European countries, This writer found another which is a new one, 2012 International Senior Open planned for December 2-8 at Red Rock Lanes. It is for top men and women senior bowlers from all the World Tenpin Bowling Association (WTBA) member federations compete for medals and prize money. The event has Singles, Doubles, Team and Masters with two different age divisions for both men and women, Men 50-60 and Men 61 and over and Women 45-55 and Women 56 and over. Also finally last month this writer got an email from WTBA announcing the inaugural WTBA World Senior Championships will be held at Red Rock Lanes in Las Vegas on August 10-16 next year. The event will be for 4 men and 4 women each country member federations facing off for medals in singles, doubles, team, all-events and Masters. Back to DSBA, This writer could not find any evidence of deaf senior bowling in Europe or Asia. If there is senior bowling over seas, some one who is able could start a World Deaf Seniors Tournament.

UPDATED 9/27/12 CALIFORNIA USBC ASSOCIATION California Pepsi Youth Bowling Championships Workshops USBC is revamping their long-time format in the Pepsi Youth Bowling Championships For Youth with new age divisions and all scratch competition. Four divisions for both boys and Program girls will now be offered — U8, U12, U15 and U20. Previously, Pepsi had divisions for Directors and 11–under handicap and 12-up handicap or scratch divisions. Coaches *NEW* CALIFORNIA IS ADDING TO THIS NEW FORMAT AND WILL BE RUNNING A HANDICAP DIVISION ALONG WITH THESE NEW AGE DIVISIONS FOR 2013. This will allow new bowlers a chance to earn scholarships at the District Finals and at the State Finals. After 3 rounds of qualifying, we want to see both new bowlers and scratch bowlers have a chance to earn awards. Five local Pepsi Workshops are scheduled to help explain these new tournament changes to Youth Program Directors and Coaches. Other Pepsi questions/issues such as help with filling out qualifying paperwork can also be answered. Please RSVP at least one week prior to [email protected] if you can attend. Thank you for your support to youth bowling!
