On Nov. 15, 2016, Butch Davis was named the fourth head coach of the FIU football program, returning to South Florida where he made a name for himself as one of the premier minds in football. In just one season at FIU, Davis’ impact on the program was felt as the Panthers matched a school record in wins (8) and earned the school’s third bowl berth –the first since the 2011 season. The 8-5 mark was the best record of any first-year head coach at FIU. He also led FIU to a 5-3 record in Confer- ence USA play, which was good enough for a second-place finish in the C-USA East Division. FIU finished the 2017 regular season leading the nation in red zone scoring offense converting 98 percent of its red-zone chances (40-of-41), which included 30 touchdowns. Davis’ 2017 FIU squad not only matched the school record in wins, but the 2017 Panthers finished the regular season throwing for the most passing yards (3,031) and rushing for the second-most yards (2,069) in school history. The offense also totaled the second-most yards (5,100) and FIU scored the second-most points (333) in a season. Defensively, the Panthers’ 23 sacks ranked eighth in a single-season and the 75 tackles for loss tied for seventh. The success of Davis’ first season led FIU to having the No. 1 ranked 2018 signing class in Conference USA and 67th nationally, which also ranked tops among all C-USA teams. Davis also saw 12 Panthers earn All-CUSA honors HEAD COACH BUTCH DAVIS highlighted by first team Thomas Owens.
