1. LETTER to PARASRAM MEHROTRA [Before June 16, 1932]1 CHI
1. LETTER TO PARASRAM MEHROTRA [Before June 16, 1932]1 CHI. PARASRAM, Judging from your letter the children seem to have made good progress. You speed with the takli is also good. Do give half an hour daily to it; if you can in what time spin 160 rounds, nothing can be better than that. What does kule ki haddi2 mean? The word Kula is not to be found in the Hindi Dictionary. Why did the haddi get swollen? Has the swelling subsided now? If it has not, you must take immediate steps to cure it. The replies to the questions which you have put to Mahadev are: 1. I consider a minimum of half an hour’s walk morning and evening essential for you and others. It is not necessary to sit in one position for more than an hour. One should stand up for a minute at least, or change the posture. 2. It is natural that a mother should desire to see her son, but every mother ought to restrain such a with and, if the son is engaged in some activity of service, he must cure his mother of such attachment. 3. When a son goes abroad and lives in a foreign country for ten years, his mother has no choice but to bear the separation. There are innumerable poor mothers in India who possibly never again see the face of their son after he has gone out to earn a living. One may console the mother through a letter, and cheer her as much as one can by reasoning with her and citing other similar instances. -

Rodman Guns Which Followed
CONFEDERATE HISTORICAL ASSOCIATION OF BELGIUM he five years of the Civil War are quite rightly considered a period of ordnance T and artillery experimentation, development, and transition. The work of one man led, in fact, to the casting of one of the biggest guns ever built, even to the present day - a monstrous 20-inch muzzle-loader that fired a 1,000-pound solid shot. In 1844, Lieut. Thomas Jackson Rodman, a young Ordnance officer only three years out of the military academy, began a long series of experiments aimed at overcoming the principal difficulty in casting extremely large iron cannon, a difficulty that actually set a maximum size limit for iron artillery pieces. At that time cannon, cast around solid cores, could be cooled only from the outside. This practice caused the cooling metal to contract toward the outer surface of a cannon barrel and in large castings created internal strains and structural irregularities in the metal, as well as “pipes” or “blowholes” - actual cavities within the casting. In short, large guns all too often had a habit of cracking in cooling, breaking in transport, or finally bursting when fired. Over a period of years, Rodman devised a theory to account for both internal strains and imperfections and for variations in the density, hardness, and tensile strength of the metal in cast-iron cannon. He outlined a plan to cast cannon around hollow cores, to be cooled from the inside, rather than externally, by a stream of running water. CONFEDERATE HISTORICAL ASSOCIATION OF BELGIUM This, Rodman felt, would cause the cooling metal to contract toward the bore and increase the density of the metal where it was most needed. -

BUT-oh John. Wow. Zonk. Kapow. Etcetera. Goddamn novel is in present typescript 527 pp, and I have written 4 songs for it, and-what I really want is to convince publishers that there should be: this novel, with maps, portraits, songs, music for songs, records of songs being sung, and all that. I may have gone berserk, John but I DO NOT THINK SO. I feel great. Jack McClelland [Laurence's publisher], when I tell him, will probably feel lousy, but let us not think of that for the moment.! ORDNANCE Related Articles from Appleton’s Cyclopedia of Applied Mechanics, 1880 Page 1 of 45 ORDNANCE, CONSTRUCTION OF. The term ordnance includes artillery of all kinds in its most comprehensive signification. Within the last twenty years the art of using a gun and developing its power has been virtually transformed by the aid of scientific research and mechanical skill. This process of evolution is in active progress. The production of a gun more powerful than any hitherto known serves but as a challenge to the manufacture of armor capable of resisting the shot from that weapon; and success in this last involves efforts toward the construction of cannon of still greater penetrating energy. With the enormously heavy guns of modern times, new discoveries in the strength of gun-metals, in the art of making projectiles, in the nature of explosives, and in the resistance of various forms of armor, are made. These in turn react upon principles of gun construction previously deemed settled, and produce modifications in them ; and thus advancement is accomplished by the light of experiment alone. THEORY OF CONSTRUCTION.--Constituent Parts.-Cannon are classified as guns, howitzers, and mortars, or as field, mountain, prairie, siege, and seacoast cannon. Fig. 3252 represents an old form of cannon, which exhibits clearly the five principal parts into which nearly all guns are regarded as divided. These are the breech, A ; the first reënforce, B; the second reënforce, C; the chase, D ; and the swell of the muzzle, E. The breech is the solid part of the piece in the prolongation of the axis; its length should be from one to one and a quarter time the diameter of the bore, H. -
