Review

he first thing to say about The Care and Feeding of All Things Fencing by Michael Mergens is that it is written for the American market and much of the terminology, language and spellings Tarenot what we areused to.However, once you have read past these problems and recognise, as examples, that ‘body cords’ are‘body wires’, ‘knickers’ are‘breeches’ and ‘connectors’ are‘inside guardsockets’, then this is agood treatise that provides plenty of very useful information that can be used by the novice, the intermediate and the expert armourer. But the book has two main weaknesses. The first is that because of its method of production the clarity of some of the smaller illustrations has been lost. Secondly, and perhaps moreimportantly,it contains some logical though not legal interpretations of the rules, such as “It is importanttonote that you do not want to get into aheated …argument with the Armourer, because they do have the power to issue aBlack Card” – if only;and in relation to the testing for anon-valid hit at foil where it is shown that the lamé jacket is faulty,“Youwant to let the Referee do it, …because he can award atouch for you if he determines that therewas avalid hit, but the equipment malfunctioned.” Many of the points made about clothing rules arespecific to the USA and Iwould suggest that for this aspect the FIE Rules for Competitions and the BFASafety Guidelines should be consulted and followed. Also, althoughthe rules referred to arethose in the USFArule book, the numbering does comparewith both the FIE and BFA(the official FIE English language version) rules. To conclude, the technical side of this work is excellent and it has made avery welcome addition to my library.Iam regularly asked, when presenting armoury courses, ifthereare any books on the subject and this will now be close to the top of the limited list. ■ Peter Huggins

Dispelling the Myths

thas become apparent to me recently that not all fencers are fully supportive of British Fencing’scurrent Idevelopment programme.Ifpossible,Iwould liketodispel some of the myths surrounding the programme. Myth One: The current development plans arebureaucratic and over-regulated. Afew hours reading of the published details makes it obvious that British Fencing needs abureaucratic regulatory system in order to access the funding to pay for it that is available from Sport England and other bureaucratic bodies. Myth Two: Ordinary fencershave little say in how British Fencing is now organised. This is obviously untrue.British Fencing has never had so many portals through which fencers can say as much as they like. Indeed fencers are continuously encouraged, via the British Fencing website, tohave their say by those with experience of business and politics who actually run the company. Myth Three: British Fencing uses meaningless language in order to obscurethe reasons underlying its policies. British Fencing’svision is to become a World Leading Fencing Family with evolving elements and global benchmarking. What could be clearer than that? Myth Four: Organising the organisersisbecoming moreimportant than organising fencing. Everyone knows that it is impossible to participate in any sport unless priority has been given to portfolio roles, corporate strategy, marketing, human resources and developing afit-for-purpose business. Myth Five: The employment of non-fencersbythe company will distance it from fencers. Good business practice dictates that the company must imitate world leading business models. This will mean using friends and relations as consultants, thus keeping the business within the (fencing) family. Rather than perpetuate these myths, weshould all be proud to be customers of British Fencing. Ihave already put my name down for the loyalty card. ■ Paul Brenda
