As the foundation of a wide range of industries, materials have been the driving force for scientific and technological development during the evolution of human civilization. Materials science and engineering have always been infrastructural, guiding and permeable, and thus the level of materials research, together with its educational level, also reflects the comprehensive strength of a country. A key requirement therefore for Tsinghua University to achieve in its strategic objective of becoming a world-class university in the 21st century is the development of materials research and materials education to a world-class level. Based on this goal, the guiding mission of the School of Materials Science and Engineering (SMSE) is to establish an internationally advanced-level platform including materials preparation, analysis & testing, and device research, and to strengthen cooperation with LIN Yuanhua relevant academic research areas in other countries, thereby complementing each other’s advantages, and driving forward progress within the materials science discipline in Tsinghua Dean of School of Materials University. Education of students is one of the most fundamental and important missions of our school. For undergraduate student education, our primary focus is on nurturing the overall ability of the students, in line with the philosophy of “deepening in foundation, broadening in vision, emphasizing in practice, and strengthening in personal quality”. For graduate student education, both innovation ability and international competitiveness are emphasized, in line with a philosophy of “science as the foundation, creativity as the mission”. The SMSE is dedicated to its goals of building up a faculty with top-ranking competitiveness and developing research facilities with first-class standards, thereby allowing scientific research with the highest impact to be carried out, and facilitating the development of innovative educational programs, so as to attract and support talented young students to enroll and study in our school. It is this spirit of “Materialist” that changes the world. School of Materials Science and Engineering Dean signature: Tsinghua University Jan, 2017 The School of Materials Science and Engineering (SMSE) in Tsinghua University was founded in December, 2012, by combining the previous Department of Materials Science and Engineering and the Materials Processing division within the Department of Mechanical Engineering. The Department of Materials Science and Engineering was itself first founded in 1988 by the merger of several divisions within Tsinghua University, including the Inorganic Non-metallic Materials division from the Department of Chemistry, the Materials Physics division from the Department of Engineering Physics, and the Metallic Materials division from the Department of Mechanical Engineering.     Fact Sheet 2020/2021 The School of Engineering, Tohoku University General Information Tohoku University Tohoku University was established in Sendai in 1907 as Tohoku Imperial University by consolidating an agricultural college and a science college. It is the third oldest former Imperial University after Tokyo and Kyoto. Tohoku University is well known for its open and progressive policies. It was the first Imperial University to admit women and foreign students, and also pioneered in opening a university by offering public lectures. Already in 1911, Tohoku University graduated its first foreign students, thus becoming the Japanese university with the longest history of foreign graduates. All of these were epoch-making events in the history of Japanese higher education. The “Spirit of Open Doors” remains alive within the tradition of Tohoku University. Along with this spirit, the University has placed a high value on the “Spirit of Search for Truth” and emphasized original and creative research. Thus Tohoku University is known for its strong orientation toward academic research. General Information In the years following its establishment, Tohoku University has grown into an institution that includes the fields of medicine, science, and engineering among others. After the earthquake struck, Professor Aoki made a tremendous contribution to saving patients’ lives and to recovering from the disastrous situation. Thanks to his strong leadership and support from many reliable colleagues, we could finally start new clinical trials for ALS patients. In this article, I wish to introduce Professor Aoki’s heroic ef- forts.
