In planning ahead for our 2017 Onslow Derby event, every lady’s question is likely to be: “What hat shall I wear to the Derby?” (In our January issue, we’ll give equal time to fashion tips for the gents.) First, decide what Kentucky Derby group you’d like to emulate In the formal seated sections of the famed Churchill Downs, ladies wear elegant, wide-brimmed hats of traditional “Southern Belle” style. The hats may be decorated with flowers, feathers, ribbons and bows, or extravagant jewels. Hats worn by ladies seated here express creativity and individuality, while exuding an air of royalty or celebrity. In the rowdier Churchill Downs Infield, hats are a bit more ... eccentric, even wild. The style is less “South- ern Belle” and more Macy’s Day Parade. Comedy, drama, anything (just about) goes! Themed hats, silly hats, over-the-top and ‘I-can’t-believe-she’s-wearing-that’ hats are fair game for the informal Infield. Next, which comes first–the hat or the dress? There are two answers here. Some say you must get the outfit first and create your hat accordingly. Others say, “Start with the showpiece!” and design around it. Derby fashion experts say the dress should be elegant yet very simple; let your dress complement your hat, not the other way around! A third option: the fascinator Are you a trendsetter like the royal Kate Middleton? Then toss the hat! Flaunt your very own fascinator! Smaller than a traditional hat but just as stylish, the fascinator has become increasingly popular among Kentucky Derby attendees. The chic headpieces are made from a woven disc often topped with feathers, flowers or beads and secured by a comb or headband; a fascinator with a veil is also quite common. A cross between a hair accessory and a cocktail hat, the fascinator always sits at an angle on the head. A fascinator can be simpler to wear than a hat, and makes quite a statement! Look for our men’s Derby fashion tips in the next Contributor! Please join the Onslow Memorial Hospital Foundation February 25, 2017 as we raise funds for Project 317 Bistro! • Memories of Bygone Days
MEMORIES OF BYGONE DAYS by CARMEL WOODEN MEMORIES OF BYGONE DAYS ABOUT THIS BOOK In 1925, Carmel Margaret Davidson was born at Crows Nest, Queensland. Carmel tells the story of her childhood during the Depression years growing up in nearby Hampton, a small country town. Many of today’s landmarks in Hampton bear the names of families in the District, which Carmel vividly brings to life. Her father was the local butcher, and in those times of The Depression he was often paid with anything people had to trade. Her earliest recollections were of trying to find shelter from the cold winds on the range, while she made dolls clothes from leaves, artfully pinned together. When Carmel was fourteen years of age, around the start of World War II, she travelled alone by steam train to find employment in Brisbane. She lived in the heart of Brisbane, in the Hotel Victory, which was then owned by her brother-in-law Sid and his wife, her sister Irene. She tells her story of work as a model milliner and fashionista, and of her courtships with military servicemen on R&R from the Pacific rim (often American personnel). Married in 1950, Carmel moved to Sydney. She rounds off her story with her family life. This is a very personal tale covering epic periods of Australian history, from the perspectives of both country and city life. 3 CARMEL WOODEN First Edition 04 August 2013, ISBN 978-0-9923117-0-4 Dedication For my Grandchildren, Brendan, Leona, Garry and Jenny A Special Thank You My special thanks to Christine Reis and Carmel Anne for their help in getting this book together.
