Each paper herein went through a peer-re- flew process by the Society's Program Committee before being accepted for resentation at its respective Meeting. We would like to thank the authors represented herein for cooperating with the Society's new approach to publishing their work. Although submitting 3apers electronically for publication in these Proceedings was undoubtedly awkward for some individuals, it makes for greater accuracy and improved ivality of presentation of their contributions.It also reflects well on the society's growing national visibility, as reflected in the increasingly diverse ocales of the contributors herein--from Massachusetts to Nebraska and Texas to 2anada. The Annual Meetings on November 12-13, 1993, and November 11-12, 1994, were held at Loyola University of Chicago. As usual, the Society is greatly indebted to Walter P. Krolikowski, S. J., for arranging such a well 31anned and enjoyable setting, even getting us use of the brand-new Rub loff Auditorium for the 1994 Meeting. In addition, the Society also wants to thank he School of Education, Dean Robert E. Roemer, and the University for gener- )usly providing facilities for our two-day gatherings. New York: Rowman and Littlefield, 2016 TREVOR NORRIS Brock University For several decades philosophers and educational theorists have advocated for the inclusion of philosophy into the K-12 school system instead of reserving it for the post-secondary context. Lone and Burroughs’ Philosophy in Education: Questioning and Dialogue in Schools avoids extensive philosophical considerations about the nature of philosophy or philosophical education, though much emerges implicitly through the activities they present. Instead, it is more of a practical handbook, guidebook, or reference. While Lone and Burroughs outline dozens of simple and effective ways to engage students of younger ages in philosophy, the book is more than just a “how to”: the authors present several compelling arguments that can be used to persuade students, parents, administrators and the general public that philosophy is worthwhile for those of younger ages. Recent years have seen a boom in literature arguing that philosophy in schools is both possible and worthwhile. Even the Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy now has an entry for philosophy for children.1 Early founders of P4C include Matthew Lipman and Gareth Matthews, who helped its establishment in the northeastern US in the 1960s and 70s. Examples of recent scholarship include Philosophy in Schools: An Introduction for Philosophers and Teachers by Goering, Shudak, & Wartenberg (2013) which is divided into distinctive approaches for elementary and secondary contexts. Its editors provide a convincing and thorough description of the merits of including philosophy in schools.

Unmasking the Right of Publicity † DUSTIN MARLAN In the landmark 1953 case of Haelan Laboratories v. Topps Chewing Gum, Judge Jerome Frank first articulated the modern right of publicity as a transferable intellectual property right. The right of publicity has since been seen to protect the strictly commercial value of one’s “persona”—the Latin-derived word meaning the mask of an actor. Why might Judge Frank have been motivated to fashion a transferable right in the monetary value of one’s public persona distinct from the psychic harm to feelings, emotions, and dignity rooted in the individual and protected under the rubric of privacy? Judge Frank was a leading figure in the American legal realist movement known for his unique and controversial “psychoanalysis of certain legal traditions” through influential books including Law and the Modern Mind. His work drew heavily on the ideas of psychoanalytic thinkers, like Sigmund Freud and Carl Jung, to describe the distorting effects of unconscious wishes and fantasies on the decision-making process of legal actors and judges.

One curious feature of the American philosophical tradition is its ability to sustain and nurture fundamental reflection in an age in which such thinking is held to be antediluvian. The flood waters of scepticism and deconstruction seem to have rendered general categorical reflection powerless. Any talk about nature or world strikes contemporary fashion as a throwback to a pre-critical era in which philosophers naively trusted in their ability to overcome the imperial projections of a self which was unable, because of its fragmented state, to justify such projections. To attempt to reflect outside of the paradigm of the text is to evidence a serious insensitivity to the hermeneutic turn which has supposedly swept all historical debris from its path. The felony is compounded when it is asserted that the tradition of metaphysics has deposited recognizable and vigorous outcroppings of truth in its movement toward validation. What for some appears as a geological formation of great strength and beauty appears to the contemporary gaze as an obstruction to its open movement and hermeneutic free play. Were we to join in the chorus of doubting Thomases we would have little time for a perspective which affirms the ability of human probing to make sense of our history and our world.

A dissertation presented in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Human Development Studies Massey University, Palmerston North New Zealand Jeff Simpson 2012 Dedicated to, Tracy, Sarah, Hannah, and Jamie. i Abstract The intent of this exploratory study was to examine the nature and impact of narcissism in the early career stages of a graduate cohort, where there has previously been little applied narcissism research. Self-reports on self- perception and critical self-insight were obtained individually from 63 new recruits in a multi-national company as part of a graduate recruitment programme. Self-report data were collected on day one of the recruits’ induction programme followed by repeated data collections at nine months and at twenty months into their employment. In addition, at months nine and twenty, two line managers of each recruit completed indicators on their perceptions of the recruits’ actual work performance. Using a newly designed narcissistic traits indicator, line managers also indicated their views of each recruit’s narcissistic tendencies. Results obtained indicated ten of the sixty three graduates had significant narcissistic tendencies. The self-ratings of recruits were subsequently compared to their actual performance as rated by their managers.

    1 Jürgen Oelkers *) Philosophy of Education and the Growing Impact of Empirical Research 1. Point of Departure: The Triumphant Success of Empiricism Empirical research methods have been used in education since the end of the 19th century. Initially experimental methods taken from psychological laboratories of the time were used and quickly also complemented with applied statistics methods which were popularized in American educational science first and foremost by Edward Thorndike. These procedures made it possible to study large test series of students who before had been outside the horizon of education. Field observations were also developed, making it possible to study concrete phenomena in children's play or in adolescents' behavior. The pioneer of this current of research was the psychologist G. Stanley Hall. This international research had undisputed advantages and was also supported politically or by teacher unions. Indeed, demands of the public or relevant groups of stakeholders influenced the behavior of educational science. This in turn brought with it another advantage: Philosophical abstractions had to be avoided as did classification into opposing philosophical camps or approaches. Theoretically speaking, there are no "isms" in empirical research which did not require long-term devotees, but rather merely topics and methods. The topics are practice-oriented and the methods are just as transparent as they are demanding, requiring instruction and constant training. Findings of early empirical research also seemed to actually have an immediate benefit. The famous learning curve from memory research gained admission to the classroom as did the intelligence test and achievement measurements and also contemporary management methods designed to ensure an efficient school organization.

The pagination of this version does not conform to the pagination of the original document.) The American philosopher John William Miller was born in Rochester, New York on January 8, 1895. After attending public schools in Rochester, he studied at Harvard College in 1912-13. For financial reasons he transferred to the University of Rochester for the years 1913 to 1915, then returned to Harvard for his senior year, receiving his A. B. degree in 1916. After working for a year in a Rochester electric company he volunteered for ambulance corps duty in France with Base Hospital 44. In 1919, motivated to enter the field of philosophy by his experience of the First World War, he returned to Harvard as a graduate student in philosophy, receiving his master's degree in 1921 and his doctorate in 1922. Among his teachers were R. B. Perry and E. B. Holt, both of the realist persuasion, and W. E. Hocking and C. I. Lewis on the more idealist side; it was in the tension between these philosophical camps that Miller worked out his own stand.(1) From 1922 to 1924 Miller taught at Connecticut College, during which time he married Katherine S. Gisel. In 1924 he moved to Williams College where, apart from interludes of summer teaching at the University of Rochester and Boston University and serving as acting professor of philosophy at the University of Minnesota in 1938-39, he spent the balance of his teaching career.

    Idealist Affinities: John William Miller and Josiah Royce By Mark D. Moorman [Posted with permission of Mark D. Moorman. Presented at the 39th annual meeting of the Society for the Advancement of American Philosophy, New York City, March 15-17, 2012.] This paper will compare the philosophies of John William Miller and Josiah Royce with regard to philosophical idealism. We hope to highlight the idealist strain in Miller’s thought by showing some affinities with similar themes in Royce. The relaxed term “affinity” suits the vagaries of the term “idealism” itself.(1) Royce was well aware of this malleable breadth. Post-Kantian idealism, viewed in its whole range of manifestation, is not any one theory so much as a tendency, a spirit, a disposition to interpret life and human nature and the world in a certain general way—a tendency, meanwhile, so plastic, so manifold, so lively, as to be capable of appealing to extremely different minds, and of expressing itself in numerous hostile teachings.(2) The equivocity of the term idealism renders our comparison more a matter of loose ‘family resemblances’ than of clear cut categories. There is second difficulty with idealism as a point of comparison, its reputation. Discussing certain impediments to the reception of Miller’s work, Vincent Colapietro points out that Miller’s idealism is “likely to make him seem outdated and even quaint.”(3) Much of the revolt against idealism in the Twentieth century took the form of hasty ab extra dismissals which left caricatures and low regard in their wake.(4) Association with German idealism came to imply, not depth, but a lack of rigor.

She is a member of the Hartt String Quartet, the Providence-based Aurea Ensemble, and the summer of 2020 would have been her 19th with the Craftsbury Chamber Players of Vermont. She has also performed with Boston-based Chameleon Arts Ensemble, Radius Ensemble, and Dinosaur Annex. She has appeared as soloist with several orchestras including the Vermont Symphony, the Wintergreen Festival Orchestra, the Charlottesville Symphony, the Champlain Philharmonic, and the Boston Virtuosi.
