In the evening, I had to undergo training at a proper wrestling arena.” Initially Inam did not have much deep interest in wrestling as he was doing it as part of his family tradition. It was in 2003 that he took part in Pakistan championship under-16 category and won the event. “It was my first professional victory. I received a lot of praise and recognition. The medal really boosted me up. I became the under-16 champion for two times. I remained the three times national champion in under-20 category.     April 15 , 2018 LAHORE: Wrestler Muhammad Inam Butt won a gold medal for Pakistan after winning the final of the men’s freestyle 86kg event at the Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, Australia on Saturday. The win moved Pakistan from a modest 31st position to 22nd in the rankings within a few hours. The 29-year-old triumphed over Nigeria’s Melvin Bibo 6-0 in the closing fight to earn gold. Prior to his final fight, Inam defeated Canada’s Alexander Moore and India’s Somveer in the semi-finals and quarter-finals, respectively. The champion began his winning campaign with a win over Australia’s Jayden Lawrence in his first match. Pakistan’s top wrestler for nearly a decade, Inam had been targeting gold at the Commonwealth Games. “History proves that wrestlers are the best among Pakistani contingents at the games. Wrestling has always been a success for us, and I want that gold,” Inam had told media before the mega event Down Under. Pakistan has won 40 medals in wrestling at the Commonwealth Games with 20 gold, 11 silver and nine bronze medals. In the first period of the final fight, 29-year-old Inam won one technical point while Bibo failed to score any point. In the second period, Inam secured 2, 2, and 1 technical points to secure five points and subsequently finished with six points against Bibo’s nil. Having secured six technical points, Inam was awarded three classification points and won the fight with 3:0 to win the first gold medal for his country.

    For The Glory Of Sport The story of the Commonwealth Games from 1930 to 2014 By Bob Phillips Author€s Note The Commonwealth Games have always been particularly close to my heart in a lifetime of a passionate interest in sport. I saw them for the first time as a teenage fan in Cardiff in 1958 € when they were still known as the British Empire and Commonwealth Games € and was captivated then by the marvellous deeds of the athletes on a cinder track fitted tightly round the hallowed turf of the celebrated Arms Park rugby-football ground. Lithe and lightning-fast sprinters from the Caribbean islands, rugged middle-distance and long-distance runners from Australia and New Zealand, a gloriously fluent quarter-miler from India, jumpers and throwers from what then seemed such exotic far-flung corners of the globe as Fiji, North Borneo and Singapore € it was all intensely exciting and laid the foundations for what would be for me many more such delightful adventures to come as a professional journalist and broadcaster. Even so, there were only 35 countries competing at those Games of more than half-a-century ago. In Glasgow this year there will be twice that number. The Games have grown out of all recognition, but in the process of so doing they have managed to maintain an intimacy € even a coziness, if you like € which so many of the other forms of international sport have long since shunned in the relentless interests of commercialism. This is a favoured theme of mine which you will find recurring throughout this history of the Commonwealth Games € call me old-fashioned, if you wish, but there are inherent qualities of fair play, of sportsmanship, of comradely competition among members of a vastly extended but affectionate family, which have survived over more than 80 years at these Games, though not entirely unscathed, and they are not widely in evidence elsewhere these days.
