The definition of the Galactic coordinate system was announced by the IAU Sub-Commission 33b on behalf of the IAU in 1958. An unrigorous transformation was adopted by the Hipparcos group to transform the Galactic coordinate system from the FK4-based B1950.0 system to the FK5-based J2000.0 system or to the International Celestial Reference System (ICRS). For more than 50 years, the definition of the Galactic coordinate system has remained unchanged from this IAU1958 version. On the basis of deep and all-sky catalogs, the position of the Galactic plane can be revised and updated definitions of the Galactic coordinate systems can be proposed. Aims. We re-determine the position of the Galactic plane based on modern large catalogs, such as the Two-Micron All-Sky Survey (2MASS) and the SPECFIND v2.0. This paper also aims to propose a possible definition of the optimal Galactic coordinate system by adopting the ICRS position of the Sgr A* at the Galactic center. -

Magee3 Draft version May 5, 2015 ABSTRACT We present a spectroscopic redshift measurement of a very bright Lyman break galaxy at z = 7:7302 ± 0:0006 using Keck/MOSFIRE. The source was pre-selected photometrically in the EGS field as a robust z ∼ 8 candidate with H = 25:0 mag based on optical non-detections and a very red Spitzer/IRAC [3.6]−[4.5] broad-band color driven by high equivalent width [O III]+Hβ line emission. The Lyα line is reliably detected at 6:1σ and shows an asymmetric profile as expected for a galaxy embedded in a relatively neutral inter-galactic medium near the Planck peak of cosmic reionization. ˚ +90 The line has a rest-frame equivalent width of EW0 = 21 ± 4 A and is extended with VFWHM = 360−70 km s−1. The source is perhaps the brightest and most massive z ∼ 8 Lyman break galaxy in the 9:9±0:2 full CANDELS and BoRG/HIPPIES surveys, having assembled already 10 M of stars at only 650 Myr after the Big Bang. The spectroscopic redshift measurement sets a new redshift record for galaxies. This enables reliable constraints on the stellar mass, star-formation rate, formation epoch, as well as combined [O III]+Hβ line equivalent widths. -

Received 2018 December 18; in original form 2017 November 16 ABSTRACT Knowledge of dynamo evolution in solar-type stars is limited by the difficulty of using active region monitoring to measure stellar differential rotation, a key probe of stellar dynamo physics. This paper addresses the problem by presenting the first ever measurement of stellar differential rotation for a main-sequence solar-type star using starspots and faculae to provide complementary information. Our analysis uses modelling of light curves of multiple exoplanet transits for the young solar-type star Kepler-71, utilizing archival data from the Kepler mission. We estimate the physical characteristics of starspots and faculae on Kepler-71 from the characteristic amplitude variations they produce in the transit light curves and measure differential rotation from derived longitudes. Despite the higher contrast of faculae than those in the Sun, the bright features on Kepler-71 have similar properties such as increasing contrast towards the limb and larger sizes than sunspots. Adopting a solar-type differential rotation profile (faster rotation at the equator than the poles), the results from both starspot and facula analysis indicate a rotational shear less than about 0.005 rad d−1, or a relative differential rotation less than 2 per cent, and hence almost rigid rotation. -

Milky Way Haze
CURIOSITY AT HOME MILKY WAY HAZE A galaxy is a group of stars, gas and dust. Our solar system is part of the Milky Way Galaxy. This galaxy appears as a milky haze in the night sky. Have you ever wondered why the Milky Way resembles a hazy, cloud-like strip in the sky? MATERIALS • Paper hole punch • Glue • Black construction paper • White paper • Masking or painter’s tape • Pen • Paper or science notebook PROCEDURE • Use the hole punch to cut out 50 circles from the white paper. • Glue the circles very close together in the center of the black sheet of paper. • Tape the black construction paper to a pole, tree, wall or other outside object you will be able to see from a distance. • Stand so your nose is almost touching the black construction paper. • Draw or write about your observations on a piece of paper or in your science notebook. • Slowly back away until the separate circles can no longer be seen. • Estimate or measure how far away you were when you could no longer see the separate circles. • What do you notice about the circles seen from a distance as compared to close up? DID YOU KNOW Our eyes are unable to distinguish small points of light that are very close together. Rather, the separate points of light blend together. In our galaxy, the light from distant stars blends together to form the Milky Way haze. The Milky Way galaxy is home to all of the stars that are visible to the naked eye as well as billions of stars that are so far away our eyes are unable to distinguish each individual point of star light. -

Our understanding of stellar dynamos has largely been driven by the phenomena we have observed of our own Sun. Yet, as we amass longer-term datasets for an increasing number of stars, it is clear that there is a wide variety of stellar behavior. Here we briefly review observed trends that place key constraints on the fundamental dynamo operation of solar-type stars to fully convective M dwarfs, including: starspot and sunspot patterns, various magnetism-rotation correlations, and mean field flows such as differential rotation and meridional circulation. We also comment on the current insight that simulations of dynamo action and flux emergence lend to our working knowledge of stellar dynamo theory. While the growing landscape of both observations and simulations of stellar magnetic activity work in tandem to decipher dynamo action, there are still many puzzles that we have yet to fully understand.
